In order to study the way how to improve the spatial action of precast monolithic composite floor slabs, and would replace the cast-in-place surface layer for reduce the weight of structure, using pseudo-dynamic tests on 1/4 scale models of two-span and three-story frame structure. The lateral load tests compared the stresses and displacements with cast-in-place floor frame-shear wall structure (SJ1) and precast monolithic floor frame-shear wall structure with X horizontal braces at the bottom of the floor (SJ2). The results show the X horizontal braces can improve the spatial action. Structural integrity (SJ2) as well as the effective transmission of the horizontal force can be ensured by additional X bracing at the bottom of the rigidity of the floor without cast-in-place concrete topping. The results show that X horizontal braces more effectively transfer horizontal, which provides a beneficial reference for similar research.

This paper presents the results of experimental and numerical investigations aimed at enhancing the flexural capacity of Precast Concrete Corbel Beam-Column Connections (PC-CBCC) using Fiber-Reinforced Plastic (FRP) sheets. The experimental study primarily focused on assessing the flexural capacity of pinned PC-CBCCs reinforced with FRP layers, comparing them to a moment-resisting connection. A series of half-scale specimens, including three PC-CBCCs with varying FRP configurations, were tested alongside one in-situ concrete fixed connection. The objective was to quantify the ultimate flexural capacity of PC-CBCCs reinforced by FRP sheets. The effects of FRP layer thickness, locations, and potential debonding were examined under unidirectional static tests while applying a constant axial compressive load to the columns and subjecting the beams to lateral loads until fracture. Additionally, a precise finite element model of the PC-CBCCs and a fixed joint was developed and verified to simulate nonlinear static analyses of the connections in ANSYS software. A comprehensive comparison was conducted to determine their responses by employing various FRP configurations and properties. The tests and numerical results demonstrate that wrapping PC-CBCCs with anchored FRPs can transform pin connections into moment-resistant joints. Moreover, critical design parameters such as bond length, thickness, and placement of FRP sheets, along with appropriate mechanical anchorage, are identified to prevent debonding and delamination.

The objective of this paper is to assess the potential for potable water savings due to rainwater use in a precast concrete factory in southern Brazil. The economic feasibility and the rainwater quality were also assessed. The current water consumption, future water demand and rainwater demand in the factory were estimated. The future demand considered was two times higher than the current water consumption since there are plans to increase the production. Three scenarios were then simulated using the computer programme Netuno. The ideal rainwater tank capacity, the potential for potable water savings and the economic feasibility analysis for each scenario were estimated. Samples of rainwater were collected in the factory and tested for quality for manufacturing precast concrete. For a rainwater tank capacity equal to 25,000 litres, the potential for potable water savings for the first scenario was 55.4%, but the first scenario was considered economically unfeasible. For the same tank capacity, the second and third scenarios presented viable results regarding potable water savings and payback. As for the rainwater quality, it was proven to be adequate for manufacturing precast concrete. The main conclusion is that rainwater can be used to manufacture precast concrete in the factory studied herein.

Precast concrete sandwich panels (PCSP) are energy efficient building system that is achieved through an insulation layer created between the concrete wythes. The insulation layer is usually of low bearing strength material making it more applicable for non-structural building systems. Hence, shear connectors are introduced to improve its structural capacity, which subsequently degrades it thermal performance by serving as thermal bridges across the panel. This article review researches of alternative materials and methods used to improve the thermal efficiency as well as reduced the strength loss due to insulation in PCSP. The alternative materials are basalt fibre reinforced polymer (BFRP), carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP), glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP), and foam concrete which are selected due to their low thermal conductivity for use in shear connection. While thermal path method has been used to prevent the effect of thermal bridges. Although, some of these materials have successfully achieved the desirable behaviours, however, several undesirable properties such as brittleness, bond slip, the sudden crushing of the panel system, and FRP failure below its ultimate strength were observed. Hence, the practicality of the alternative materials is still questionable despite its higher cost compared to the conventional steel and concrete used in the PCSP system.

The concrete sector is known for its significant contribution to the CO2 emissions. There are two main contributing factors for this situation: the large amount of concrete consumed per year on the planet and the high CO2 released from Portland cement manufacture, the key binding agent in concrete. To face the consequent sustainability issues, diverse strategies have been explored on the carbon capture and storage potential of cementitious materials. This paper addresses the potential of storing CO2 in concrete during the curing stage, applied to the precast Portuguese industry. To this purpose, it was assumed that CO2 will become a waste that will require an outlet in the future, considering that carbon capture will become mandatory in many industries. This work concluded that the net benefit in terms of carbon retention is positive for the process of storing carbon in concrete during the curing stage. More specifically, it was demonstrated that the additional emissions from the introduction of this new operation are only 10% of the stored amount, returning a storage potential of 76 000 tonnes of CO2 yearly. Moreover, the overall net reduction in the concrete life cycle averages 9.4% and 8.8% for precast elements and only non-structural elements, respectively. When a low cement dosage strategy is coupled with carbonation curing technology, the overall carbon net reduction is estimated to be 45%.

Fly ash cement has rarely been used in Japan, mainly because its strength development is slower than ordinary Portland cement. In this research, the effect of the new fly ash cement with both high alite (C3S) cement and fly ash modified by electrostatic belt separation method on cracking resistance of precast concrete prepared by steam curing was studied. The mechanical and shrinkage properties of the proposed fly ash concrete were compared with those of concrete made using OPC cement without fly ash. In order to study the cracking tendency of precast concrete with the proposed fly ash cement, thermal stress analysis was conducted taking into consideration of the experimental data of concrete properties with the different concrete mix proportions. A standard precast concrete box culvert model was used in this 3D FEM analysis and the distribution of temperature and relative humidity in cross section and induced restraint stress during and after steam curing were discussed. Steam-cured concrete with fly ash and high alite cement developed higher compressive strength on the first day of age than concrete with OPC. The proposed fly ash concrete developed high cracking resistance in the early days. On the other hand, the results showed that the drying shrinkage at later ages was the main cause of cracking.

Structural systems in housing projects contribute to the energy consumption of buildings during and after construction, and the climate plays a significant role in this energy consumption. Housing projects in harsh environments such in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) directly contribute to energy performance, specifically in low-density residential areas. By selecting the most efficient structural system, prior construction can enhance energy performance in such housing projects. The present study investigates the energy performance of three different structural systems used in UAE national housing: precast concrete, reinforced concrete, and light gauge steel (LGS). The case studies used for this study were constructed in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE, specifically in Alain city. Second, through qualitative analysis and average annual billing of each housing project, the study identifies the thermal defects and determines the electricity consumptions of each system. The results indicate that the LGS system provides high thermal conductivity through its structural elements whereas reinforced concrete leads to the highest annual energy consumption in kW h/m². Finally, precast concrete has few thermal defects in its junctions and structural elements. The results indicate that LGS and reinforced concrete should be further studied, especially with regard to insulation and improvement, prior to implementation in housing systems.

Full depth precast deck panel (FDDP) is one element of the prefabricated bridge element and systems (PBES) that allows for quick un-shored assembly of the bridge deck on-site as part of the accelerated bridge construction (ABC) technology. This paper investigates the structural response of full-depth precast deck panels (FDDPs) constructed with new construction materials and connection details. FDDP is cast with normal strength concrete (NSC) and reinforced with high modulus (HM) glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) ribbed bars. The panel-to-girder V-shape connections use the shear pockets to accommodate the clustering of the shear connectors. A novel transverse connection between panels has been developed, featuring three distinct female-to-female joint configurations, each with 175-mm projected GFRP bars extending from the FDDP into the closure strip, complemented by a female vertical shear key and filled with cementitious materials. The ultra-high performance fiber reinforced concrete (UHPFRC) was selectively used to joint-fill the 200-mm transverse joint between adjacent precast panels and the shear pockets connecting the panels to the supporting girders to ensure full shear interaction. Two actual-size FDDP specimens for each type of the three developed joints were erected to perform fatigue tests under the footprint of the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code (CHBDC) truck wheel loading. The FDDP had a 200-mm thickness, 2500-mm width, and 2400-mm length in traffic direction; the rest was over braced steel twin girders. Two types of fatigue tests were performed; incremental variable amplitude fatigue (VAF) loading and constant amplitude fatigue (CAF) loading, followed by monotonically loading the slab ultimate-to-collapse. It was observed that fatigue test results showed that the ultimate capacity of the slab under VAF loading or after 4 million cycles of CAF exceeds the factored design wheel load specified into the CHBDC. Also, punching shear failure mode was dominant in all the tested FDDP specimens.

Efficient fixed crane position analysis is critical in precast buildings construction to maximize lifting efficiency for precast elements. The primary objective is to minimize the travel distances of fixed cranes, thereby enhancing operational efficiency and cost control. This involves strategically reducing the distances between the transport truck parking, where elements are stored, the fixed crane, and the construction installation point. Despite its significance, existing studies often overlook the dynamic movement efficiency of transport trucks, particularly when dealing with multiple transport trucks and various models of fixed cranes, rendering the opti-mization of this scenario a challenging NP-hard problem susceptible to combinatorial explosion. This study presents a novel mathematical model leveraging the Genetic Algorithm (GA). The model aims to solve optimal model and position of fixed cranes, along with identifying ideal positions for transport truck parking. The study's methodology is validated and demonstrated through a project case study. Comparative analyses between the proposed model and the original planning underscore a noteworthy 6% reduction in both duration and costs when lifting elements directly from transport trucks, as opposed to establishing an on-site stock yard. Furthermore, the developed GA exhibits a substantial improvement in final solutions, achieving a remarkable 30% reduction in both operational duration and costs. This research contributes valuable insights into fixed crane position analysis of precast building construction, providing foundation for enhanced operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness in the industry.

The article presents the results and conclusions of a series of tests of wedge-shaped blocks armoring carried out on a new experimental facility (‘Hydraulic Experimentation Facility - Luis Ruano’) in quasi-prototype conditions. The article describes the singular testing facility that was built at the inlet channel of the Acequia de Sora channel, immediately upstream of the Laverné reservoir (Zaragoza, Spain). The inflow of the testing facility has a maximum discharge of 9 m³s^-1. The aim is to perform experimental research on technologies to protect embankment dams and dikes against overflowing erosion under quasi-prototype conditions. The results of the tests showed the ability of the WSBs to withstand high unit discharges under extremely negative conditions. Furthermore, conclusions were drawn about potential threats to the sound behavior of the armor.
