The use of alternative synthetic methods, in the face of traditional processes that do not conform to the principles of Green Chemistry, represent a problem in the pharmaceutical industry. The procedures for the synthesis of benzimidazole derivatives have become a focus in synthetic organic chemistry, as they are building blocks of strong interest for the synthesis of compounds with pharmacological activity. Various benzimidazole derivatives have found very strong application in medicine and their synthesis is reported in the literature. A simple and environmental Montmorillonite K10 (MK10) catalyzed method for the synthesis of benzimidazole derivatives has been developed. The use of MK10 as heterogeneous catalysis provides various advantages in terms of yields, in the work up procedure of the reaction, selectivity and the possible recycle of catalyst without waste formation. The reactions were carried out in solvent free condition and in short reaction time using an inexpensive and environmentally friendly heterogeneous catalysis and it has been shown that the reaction process is applicable in the industrial field.

A simple and eco-friendly Montmorillonite K10 (MK10) catalyzed method for the synthesis of cyclopentenone derivatives from biomass-produced furfural has been developed. The versatility of this protocol is that the reactions were carried out in solvent free condition and in short reaction time under heterogeneous catalysis. Montmorillonite K10 is a material most explored as heterogeneous catalyst since it is inexpensive and environmentally friendly.

To investigate the effect of montmorillonite on nonylphenol enrichment in a zebrafish model. The AB strain zebrafish were used as the animal subjects and three concentration gradients were set for both nonylphenol and montmorillonite, according to their actual concentrations in aquaculture water in Huzhou city. A group treated with nonylphenol alone was also set, adding up to 12 experimental groups. Concentrations of nonylphenol enriched in the liver, muscle, and gill of zebrafish were detected by solid phase microextraction–high performance liquid chromatography at Day 7, 15, and 30, respectively. Besides, the relative enzymatic activity of Superoxide dismutase (SOD) and the Glutathione S-transferase (GST) were also been detected, and the data were statistically analyzed. The results showed that the concentrations of nonylphenol in zebrafish peaked at Day 7 and gradually decreased afterwards for all the experimental groups. And the montmorillonite reduces short-term accumulation of nonylphenol in gills, and the high concentration of nonylphenol facilitates its enrichment in liver and muscle while the low concentration of nonylphenol doesn’t. Meanwhile, the low concentration of nonylphenol in liver exerts an influence on the inductive effect of SOD and GST while the high concentration of nonylphenol shows the inhibiting effect of SOD and GST.

In the preparation of polymer-clay nanocomposites the chemical incompatibility between the clay surface and polyolefins can be overcome by using clays organically modified with short chain organic cations. The compatibility can be further enhanced by using functionalized polymer that wets the clay surface while being miscible with the non-polar polymer matrix. In this work we tried to modify the host polymer polypropylene (PP) by irradiating it with gamma-rays in air knowing that it undergoes oxidation and chain scission simultaneously. Thus lower molecular weight PP with highly polar surface due to oxidation can be expected to play double role of clay modifier and functional compatibilizer. This has been observed to be the case. Finely ground PP granules were irradiated in air in a ⁶⁰Co γ-irradiator at the dose rate of 0.08 kGy/h (low dose rate to enhance oxidation) to 5, 10, and 20 kGy total doses. The extent of oxidation and change in molecular weight were determined by ATR-FTIR and Melt Flow Rate measurements respectively. PP/MMT nanocomposites were prepared by using 20% γ-PP, 1-5 % MMT and pristine PP to make up the total 100 in a torque rheometer. Maleated PP was also used in similar quantities to compare the effectiveness of γ-PP as a compatibilizing agent. Nanocomposites prepared with 10 kGy irradiated PP was found to show optimum mechanical properties among all formulations, with 26% increase in E-modulus and 10% increase in tensile strength as compared to pristine PP. Ternary PP nanocomposites were characterized by XRD, SAXS and PALS studies.

The preparation of new materials based on starch for the development of biodegradable packaging is increasing, however, the poor properties of this biopolymer for this application causes an area of opportunities for the improvement of water vapour permeability (WVP), mechanical properties, thermal properties, hydrophilicity, water absorption, among others. Hence, starch has been combined with other polymers such as polyvinyl alcohol, which has shown an improvement in the mechanical properties of starch, also, the use of clays suggests that the properties of response to water can be improved. Therefore, in this work, the preparation and characterization of starch-PVA-nanoclay films prepared by solvent casting is reported. The results obtained suggest that the sonication of nanoclay is necessary to reach a good dispersion, which promotes a strong interaction among starch-PVA-nanoclay. In addition, the properties of WVP and mechanical properties of films improved with incorporation of nanoclay, the concentration of 0.5% w/v of nanoclay showed to be the best concentration due to concentrations of 1.0 and 1.5% w/v were poorer than 0.5% w/v. Accordingly, the successful incorporation of nanoclays into the matrix starch-PVA suggests that this material is a good candidate for use as packaging.

The presence of clays in copper minerals has a significant negative impact during their processing, leading to low recoveries during the flotation process. In saline environments such as seawater, the presence of clays contribute to an increase in operational problems caused by salinity, a decrease in the grade of the copper concentrate, alteration of the rheology of the mineral pulp, a decrease in the selectivity of copper during the flotation process, a reduction in the quality of clarified water, and excessive corrosion of metallic components. This study explores the electroflotation of kaolinite and montmorillonite clays in NaCl solutions using a modified Hallimond tube coupled with Ti Gr. 2 electrodes for bubble generation via water electrolysis, and the corrosion analysis of these electrodes applying the superposition model. The electroflotation results show recovery of clays close to 72.68% for kaolinite, 88.44% for montmorillonite, and 67.36% for a mixtures of both clays. The presence of clays helps reduce the corrosive effects of Ti Gr. 2 from 0.069 A/m2 in NaCl to 0.0073 A/m2 in NaCl with montmorillonite clay.

The present work is focused on functionalizing Montmorillonite (Mt) with poly dimethyl siloxane (PDMS) to develop a hybrid membrane reactor for the removal of Co (II) and Ni (II) ions from model wastewater samples. The specific surface area of the novel material was found to be 444 m2 /g. X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR) spectra reveal the formation of exfoliated composite material. The efficiency of this membrane material was determined by subjecting it to continuous filtration experiments. It was able to remove 50% of Co (II) and 75% of Ni (II) ions, respectively, in one cycle of filtration in less than three minutes of operation with a permeate flux rate of 675 L/m2/H and 975 L/m2/H respectively, for both the ions.

The paper discusses the mechanism of montmorillonite structure alteration and bentonites properties modification (on the example of samples from clay deposit Taganka, Kazakhstan) due to the thermochemical treatment (treatment with inorganic acid solutions at different temperatures, concentrations and reaction times). With the use of the suit of methods certain processes were distinguished: transformation of montmorillonite structure, which appears in the leaching of interlayer and octahedral cations, protonation of the interlayer and OH groups at octahedral sheets. Changes in the structure of the 2:1 layer of montmorillonite and its interlayer result in significant changes in the properties – reduction of cation exchange capacity and an increase of specific surface area. The results of the work showed that bentonite clays retain a significant portion of its adsorption properties even after the long term and intense thermochemical treatment (6M HNO3, 60°C, 108 hours)

Neurodegenerative diseases of protein misfolding affect humans and animals. In humans, these diseases include Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Parkinson’s disease (PD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and Western Pacific amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and Parkinsonism-dementia complex (ALS/PDC). Mineral exposure may be important in the pathogenesis of protein misfolding cascades. The possible association of bentonite, montmorillonite, and mineral risk factors with Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, ALS, and Western Pacific ALS/PDC is analyzed and discussed.

Scientists have observed amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) disease clusters around certain lakes in the regions of northern New England and northern Ohio. A Parkinson’s disease cluster has also been observed in Vancouver. Cyanobacteria toxin exposure has been considered as a potential risk factor to explain this association. It is reported here that these regions have several commonalities in their environment, including a notable geologic history, the presence of abundant glacial sediments, and possible mineral and bentonite exposures. The possible association with and significance of these risk factors in ALS and Parkinson’s disease is discussed.
