As long as the non-contact digital printing is not a common standard in the corrugated packaging industry, corrugated board crushing is a real issue that affects the load capacity of the boxes. Crushing mainly occurs during the converting of corrugated board (e.g. analog flexographic printing or laminating) and is a process that cannot be avoided. However, as show in this study, it can be controlled. In this work, extended laboratory tests were carried out on the crushing of double-walled corrugated board. The influence of fully controlled crushing (with a precision: ±10 μm) in the range from 10 to 70 % on different laboratory measurements was checked. Most of the typical mechanical tests were performed e.g. edge crush test, four-point bending test, shear stiffness test, torsional stiffness test, etc. on reference and crushed specimens. The residual thickness reduction of the crushed samples was also controlled. All empirical observations and performed measurements were the basis for building an analytical model of crushed corrugated board. The proven and verified model was then used to study the crushing effect of the selected corrugated board on the efficiency of simple packages with various dimensions.

Foam concrete is a highly cellularized cementitious material that undergoes extensive plastic deformation when loaded to failure. Under compression, the foam structure gets progressively crushed at a steady stress stage such that a substantial amount of energy is dissipated. Understanding foam concrete crushing behavior is of special importance for its engineering applications such as energy absorber, but the current studies are insufficient to define material properties for design of field applications. This study characterizes the crushing strength and foam modulus of samples with penetration test and resonant frequency test, respectively. A four-phase crushing behavior is observed. The yield strength and plateau strength are identified to characterize the foam crushing. Using the experimental inputs, the modulus-strength constitutive equations are then established. A stable match, an intercuspated maxilla-mandible relation is the universally accepted goal for dental restorative interventions, yet the underlying sensorimotor mechanisms to achieve this goal in the natural jaw closure remains to be elucidated. Dentists have intuitively regarded peripheral sensory innervation from tooth contacts as a significant control element for jaw muscle actions, both in the state of health and in cases of pathological dysfunction. However, therapeutical interventions for reshaping the dental arch anatomy and jaw relations have not always been successful. Repetitive masticatory chewing cycles, swallowing, talking, as well as volitional jaw-opening and -closing involve stereotyped neural commands from the central nervous system that are modulated in reaction to the sensory afferent feedback from the peripheral neurons and their sensor organs. The aim of this article is to describe, on a fraction of a second time-scale, the minuscule tilts and kinematic events of mandible during the making of a stable match with maxilla. Evidence of the importance of tooth contacts as the sensorimotor motivation of each of the successive kinematic steps of the “mandible-meets-maxilla-narrative” are discussed.
