Small molecule inhibitors of adipocyte fatty-acid binding protein 4 (FABP4) have got interest following the recent publication of their pharmacologically beneficial effects. Recently it comes out that FABP4 is an attractive molecular target for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, other metabolic diseases, and some type of cancers. In the past years, hundreds of effective FABP4 inhibitors have been synthesized and discovered but, unfortunately, none of them is in the clinical research phase. The field of computer-aided drug design seems to be promising and useful for the identification of FABP4 inhibitors; hence, different structure- and ligand-based computational approaches were already performed for their identification. In this paper, we searched for new potentially active FABP4 ligands in the Marine Natural Products (MNP) database. 14,492 compounds were retrieved from this database and filtered through a statistical and computational filter. Seven compounds were suggested by our methodology to possess a potential inhibitory activity upon FABP4 in the range of 79–245 nM. ADMET properties prediction were performed to validate the hypothesis of the interaction with the intended target and to assess the drug-likeness of these derivatives; from these analyses, three molecules resulted as excellent candidates for becoming new drugs.

This study explores the integration of computer vision with topology optimization for additive manufacturing, with a focus on maximizing eigenfrequency in a design domain. Utilizing cus-tom-developed photogrammetry software, high-resolution images are processed to generate de-tailed 3D models, subsequently converted to STL files with precision. Adaptive meshing in COMSOL Multiphysics, controlled through a MATLAB API, ensures optimal mesh resolution. Prioritizing resource conservation in extraterrestrial environments, the original volume is reduced by 50% while preserving structural integrity. The design domain undergoes rigorous topology optimization in MATLAB, supported by COMSOL's advanced FEM simulation. The optimized design exhibits a 57% performance improvement and a 50% weight reduction, maintaining desired vibration characteristics, validating the efficacy of the modifications. Moreover, the case with an eccentric mass shows a significant 64% increase in eigenfrequency.

Art's unique style and creativity are essential in defining a work's identity, conveying emotions, and shaping audience perception. Recent advancements in diffusion models have revolutionized art design, animation, and gaming, particularly in generating original artwork and visual identities. However, traditional creative processes face challenges such as slow innovation, high costs, and limited scalability. Consequently, deep learning has emerged as a promising solution for enhancing painting-style creative design. In this paper, we present the Painting-Style Design Assistant Network (PDANet), a groundbreaking network architecture designed for advanced style transformation. Our work is supported by the Painting-42 dataset, a meticulously curated collection of 4,055 artworks from 42 illustrious Chinese painters, capturing the aesthetic nuances of Chinese painting and offering invaluable design references. Additionally, we introduce a lightweight Identity-Net, designed to enhance large-scale text-to-image (T2I) models by aligning internal knowledge with external control signals. This innovative Identity-Net seamlessly integrates image prompts into the U-Net encoder, enabling the generation of diverse and consistent images. Through extensive quantitative and qualitative evaluations, our approach has demonstrated superior performance compared to existing methods, producing high-quality, versatile content with broad applicability across various creative domains. Our work not only advances the field of AI-driven art but also offers a new paradigm for the future of creative design.

Attempts to use computers to aid in the detection of breast malignancies date back more than 20 years. Despite significant interest and investment, this has historically led to minimal or no significant improvement in performance and outcomes with traditional computer aided detection. However, recent advances in artificial intelligence and machine learning are now starting to deliver on the promise of improved performance. There are at present more than 20 FDA approved AI applications for breast imaging, but adoption and utilization are widely variable and overall low. Breast imaging is unique and has aspects that create both opportunities and challenges for AI development and implementation. Breast cancer screening programs worldwide rely on screening mammography to reduce the morbidity and mortality of breast cancer and many of the most exciting research and available AI applications focus on cancer detection for mammography. There are however multiple additional potential applications for AI in breast imaging including decision support, risk assessment, breast density quantitation, workflow and triage, quality evaluation, response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy assessment, and image enhancement. In this review the current status, availability, and future directions of investigation of these applications are discussed, as well as the opportunities and barriers to more widespread utilization.

This study presents a novel approach combining computer vision with topology optimization for additive manufacturing. Using specialized photogrammetry software, we capture high-resolution images of the design domain to create precise 3D models through detailed scanning. These models are converted into STL file format and remeshed using an adaptive algorithm within COMSOL 5.3 Multiphysics, managed by a custom MATLAB 2023. This integration allows optimal mesh resolution and accuracy in analyses. We applied this method to design a concrete pillar for 3D printing, aiming for a 75% volume reduction to enhance material efficiency and stability, crucial for extraterrestrial environments. The design, scanned with a 360-degree camera array, informed the MATLAB-based topology optimization process. Combining MATLAB’s optimization algorithms with COMSOL’s meshing and finite element solver solver, we explored material-efficient configurations. The results show significant volume reduction, particularly in the central design area, optimizing material use while maintaining structural stability. The optimization algorithm demonstrated rapid, stable convergence to near-optimal solutions within about 20 iterations, highlighting the method’s efficiency and robustness in complex design optimization.

We consider a random dynamical system arising in a model of associative memory. This system can be seen as a small (stochastic and deterministic) perturbation of a determinstic system having two weak attractors which are destroyed after the perturbation. We show, with a computer aided proof, that the system has a kind of chaotic itineracy. Typical orbits are globally chaotic, while they spend relatively long time visiting attractor's ruins.

We evaluate performance of Isogeometric analysis (IGA) for structural deformation and automobile crash. In automobile crash analysis, ensuring the accuracy of the acceleration, velocity and load in time series as well as the deformation behavior is important. To maintain the aforementioned consistency, accurately reproducing the bending and buckling of structural members is indispensable. In this study, we firstly compute the bending and buckling of structural members using IGA and validate its performance by comparing the results with conventional finite element analysis and experiments. In addition, we utilize IGA for the crash analysis of an automobile body.

Lung cancer, globally recognized as the leading cause of cancer-related mortality, presents a pressing need for innovative treatment strategies. Increasing evidence points towards the potential of monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors in modulating cancer progression, primarily due to their role in regulating cellular metabolism and apoptotic pathways. This extraordinary study delves into the multifaceted therapeutic implications of MAO inhibitors in lung cancer management, elucidating their ability to pave the way for clinical advancement via novel targets and pathways. Capitalizing on recent advances in molecular biology, this research explores the molecular mechanisms underlying the anticancer actions of MAO inhibitors. By examining their impact on cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and apoptosis in lung cancer cell lines, we provide insight into the intricate signaling pathways and biochemical processes modulated by these compounds. The study also investigates the synergistic effects of MAO inhibitors in combination with established chemotherapeutic agents, elucidating their potential to enhance treatment efficacy and reduce cytotoxicity. Furthermore, we delve into the implications of MAO inhibitors on the tumor microenvironment, evaluating their influence on angiogenesis, immune regulation, and the epithelial-mesenchymal transition. This comprehensive analysis enables the identification of novel molecular targets, which hold promise for the development of advanced therapeutics tailored for specific lung cancer subtypes. To substantiate our findings, in this review, we thoroughly analyze the existing literature using state-of-the-art bioinformatics tools." in vivo orthotopic lung cancer models, and clinical patient cohorts. This robust and multidisciplinary approach permits the generation of clinical evidence supporting the integration of MAO inhibitors in lung cancer management. Conclusion: This ground-breaking study establishes the therapeutic potential of monoamine oxidase inhibitors in lung cancer management by unearthing novel pathways and targets for clinical advancement. The outcomes open doors for the development of innovative treatment strategies and inspire continued research efforts to combat the global burden of lung cancer.

Early detection of breast cancer, one of the most common cancers in women worldwide, raises survival rates and lowers the cost of treatment. Although breast cancer detection and classification (CAD) tools have improved, some issues and restrictions still require further research. The creation of breast cancer CAD systems, particularly with deep learning models, was significantly impacted by recent advancements in machine learning and image processing techniques. The current deep learning-based CAD system to identify and categorize masses in mammography is presented in a structured manner in this survey. The survey provides the most popular breast cancer CAD system evaluation metrics, publicly available mammographic datasets, and current image modalities. The survey examines the available literature, emphasizing its strengths and limitations. The survey also emphasizes the difficulties and drawbacks of the current methods for classifying and detecting breast cancer. We point out research gaps and make suggestions for further study. This systematic review may be beneficial for clinicians using CAD systems to diagnose breast cancer early on and for researchers looking for knowledge gaps and making more contributions to the field.

Image processing is a field of which its popularity increases and continues and, that grows dynamically with new technologies. Nowadays, image processing finds itself in use in almost every field. One of these uses is undoubtedly in the field of medicine, where diagnosis and treatment planning are made from images and, which is constantly changing with newly developed techniques. Of course, the most important factor in using this so widely in the medical field is the acquisition of images on every medical field. With the help of these images, the complaints can be seen more easily and the doctor can follow a path in the treatment of the disease. In our study, we used the Region Growing segmentation method to detect the intestinal mass. This study compares the area determined by the specialist with the area obtained with the segmentation process and, it is seen that the created software system can be used as an auxiliary system to specialist doctors.

With recent focus on deep neural network architectures for development of algorithms for computer-aided diagnosis (CAD), we provide a review of studies within the last 3 years (2015-2017) reported in selected top journals and conferences. 29 studies that met our inclusion criteria were reviewed to identify trends in this field and to inform future development. Studies have focused mostly on cancer-related diseases within internal medicine while diseases within gender-/age-focused fields like gynaecology/pediatrics have not received much focus. All reviewed studies employed image datasets, mostly sourced from publicly available databases (55.2%) and few based on data from human subjects (31%) and non-medical datasets (13.8%), while CNN architecture was employed in most (70%) of the studies. Confirmation of the effect of data manipulation on quality of output and adoption of multi-class rather than binary classification also require more focus. Future studies should leverage collaborations with medical experts to aid future with actual clinical testing with reporting based on some generally applicable index to enable comparison. Our next steps on plans for CAD development for osteoarthritis (OA), with plans to consider multi-class classification and comparison across deep learning approaches and unsupervised architectures were also highlighted.

Verifying the accuracy of a 3D-printed object involves using an image processing system. This system compares images of the CAD model of the object to be printed with its 3D-printed counterparts to identify any discrepancies. It is important to note that the integrity of the accuracy measurement is heavily dependent on the image processing settings chosen. This study focuses on this issue by developing a customized image processing system. The system generates binary images of a given CAD model and its 3D-printed counterparts and then compares them pixel-by-pixel to determine the accuracy. Users can experiment with various image processing settings, such as grayscale to binary image conversion threshold, noise reduction parameters, masking parameters, and pixel-fineness adjustment parameters, to see how they affect accuracy. The study concludes that the grayscale to binary image conversion threshold has the most significant impact on accuracy and that the optimal threshold varies depending on the color of the 3D-printed object. The system can also effectively eliminate noise (filament marks) during image processing, ensuring accurate measurements. Additionally, the system can measure the accuracy of highly complex porous structures where the pores size, depth, and distribution are random. The insights gained from this study can be used to develop intelligent systems for the metrology of additive manufacturing.

People are drawn to woodcut-style designs due to their striking visual impact and strong contrast. However, traditional woodcut prints and previous computer-aided methods have not addressed the issues of dwindling design inspiration, lengthy production times, and complex adjustment procedures. We propose a novel network framework, the Woodcut-style Design Assistant Network (WDANet), to tackle these challenges. Notably, our research is the first to utilize diffusion models to streamline the woodcut-style design process. We've curated the Woodcut-62 dataset, featuring works from 62 renowned historical artists, to train WDANet in absorbing and learning the aesthetic nuances of woodcut prints, offering users a wealth of design references. Based on a noise reduction network, our dual cross-attention mechanism effectively integrates text and woodcut-style image features. This allows users to input or slightly modify a text description to quickly generate accurate, high-quality woodcut-style designs, saving time and offering flexibility. As confirmed by user studies, quantitative and qualitative analyses show that WDANet outperforms the current state-of-the-art in generating woodcut-style images and proves its value as a design aid.

Lung cancer (LC) stands as the foremost cause of cancer-related fatality rates worldwide. Early diagnosis significantly enhances patient survival rate. Nowadays, low dose computed tomography (LDCT) is widely employed on chest as a tool for large-scale lung cancer screening. Nonetheless, a large amount of chest radiographs causes an onerous burden on radiologists. Some computer-aided diagnostic (CAD) tools can provide insights to medical images for diagnosis and augmenting diagnostic speed. However, due to variation in parameter settings across different patients, substantial discrepancies in image voxels persist. We find different voxel-size causing a compromise between model generalization and diagnostic efficacy. This study investigates the performance disparities of diagnostic models trained on original images and LDCT images reconstructed to different voxel-sizes but isotropic. The application is to differentiate a nodule to be benign or malignant. Using 11 features, a support vector machine (SVM) is trained on LDCT images with an isotropic voxel having side-length of 1.5 mm for 225 patients in house. The result yields a favorable model performance with an accuracy of 0.9596 and an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC/AUC) of 0.9855. In addition to furnish CAD tools for clinical applications, future research is encouraged to include LDCT images from multi-centers.

Tuberculosis (TB) disease still remain a major global threat due to the growing number of drug-resistant species and global warming. Despite the fact that there are new molecular diagnostic approaches, however, majority of developing countries and remote clinics depends on conventional approaches such as Tuberculin test, microscopic examinations and radiographic imaging (Chest X-ray). These techniques are hindered by several challenges which can lead to miss-diagnosis especially when interpreting large number of sample cases. Thus, in order to reduce workload and prevent miss-diagnosis, scientists incorporated computer-aided technology for detection of medical images known as Computer aided Detection (CADe) or Diagnosis (CADx). The use of AI-powered techniques has shown to improve accuracy, sensitivity, specificity. In this review, we discussed about the epidemiology, pathology, diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis. The review also provides background information on Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Deep Learning (DL), Transfer Learning (TL) and their applications in detection of tuberculosis from both microscopic slide images and X-ray images. The review also proposed an IoT/AI powered system which allows transfer of results obtained from DL models with end users through internet networks. The concept of futuristic diagnosis, limitations of current techniques and open research issues are also discussed.

One of the critical tools for early detection and subsequent evaluation of the incidence of lung diseases is chest radiography. This study presents a real-world implementation of a convolutional neural network (CNN) based Carebot Covid app to detect COVID-19 from chest X-ray (CXR) images. Our proposed model takes the form of a simple and intuitive application. Used CNN can be deployed as a STOW-RS prediction endpoint for direct implementation into DICOM viewers. The results of this study show that the deep learning model based on DenseNet and ResNet architecture can detect SARS-CoV-2 from CXR images with precision of 0.981, recall of 0.962 and AP of 0.993.

Computers and artificial intelligence affect every field of life nowadays. In medical image interpretation automatic decision making using algorithms are used increasingly in every sub-field and computer aided diagnosis (CAD) is one of the main tools available to medical science today. CAD systems are used as an augmented option for both the medical practitioner and the patients, with image analysis and interpretation being of primary importance. In particular, spatial relations are used in knowledge representation, and these relations can be used for effective medical image interpretation. In this paper, we put forth an algorithm for defining non-small cells lungs cancer (NSCLC) stages in lungs images interpretation using topological spatial relations. We show an application case study in event motion predictions for lung cancer staging scoring - tumor, nodes and metastasis (TNM) - with combined topological and directional relations.

Painting style and creativity are fundamental to art, defining a work’s uniqueness and expression. They embody an artist’s personality, convey emotions, establish identity, and shape audience perception, adding depth and value to the work. Recently, diffusion models have gained popularity in art design, animation, and gaming, especially in original painting creation, poster design, and visual identity development. Traditional creative processes, while demanding unique imagination and creativity, often face challenges such as slow innovation, high reliance on manual efforts, high costs, and limitations in scalability. Consequently, exploring painting-style creative design through deep learning has emerged as a promising trend. In this paper, we introduce a novel network architecture, the Painting-Style Design Assistant Network (PDANet), for style transformation. To support this, we curated the Painting-42 dataset, comprising 4,055 works by 42 renowned Chinese painters. PDANet leverages this dataset to capture the aesthetic intricacies of Chinese painting, offering rich design references. Furthermore, we propose a lightweight Identity-Net for large-scale text-to-image (T2I) models, which aligns internal knowledge with external control signals, thereby enhancing the capabilities of existing T2I models. The trainable Identity-Net feeds image prompts into the U-Net encoder to generate diverse and stable images. Both quantitative and qualitative analyses demonstrate that our approach outperforms current methods, delivering high-quality generated content with wide-ranging applicability.

Beyond their significant contribution to the dietary and industrial supplies, marine algae are considered to be a potential source of some unique metabolites with diverse health benefits. The pharmacological properties, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, cholesterol homeostasis, protein clearance and anti-amyloidogenic potentials of algal metabolites endorse their protective efficacy against oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, and impaired proteostasis which are known to be implicated in the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative disorders and the associated complications after cerebral ischemia and brain injuries. As was evident in various preclinical studies, algal compounds conferred neuroprotection against a wide range of neurotoxic stressors, such as oxygen/glucose deprivation, hydrogen peroxide, glutamate, amyloid β, or 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium (MPP+) and, therefore, hold therapeutic promise for brain disorders. While a significant number of algal compounds with promising neuroprotective capacity have been identified over the last decades, a few of them have had access to clinical trials. However, the recent approval of an algal oligosaccharide, sodium oligomannate, for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease enlightened the future of marine algae-based drug discovery. In this review, we briefly outline the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative diseases and brain injuries for identifying the targets of pharmacological intervention, and then review the literature on the neuroprotective potentials of algal compounds along with the underlying pharmacological mechanism, and present an appraisal on the recent therapeutic advances. We also propose a rational strategy to facilitate algal metabolites-based drug development.

Using the techniques of computer-aided drug design, the docking of Survivin and known active small molecules was simulated and then the key amino acid residue fragment of the target protein was analyzed. It led to the discovery of active groups capable of binding to the critical sites. Through the use of the natural product, Oleanolic Acid, as a lead compound, the introduction of the active groups onto the A-ring, and the modification of the carboxyl group at the C-28 position using esterification or amidation, twenty new Oleanolic acid derivatives had been designed and synthesized.A549 and SGC-7901 cells were used to screen the antitumor activity in vitro through the standard MTT method. The compounds, II₃, III₅ and Ⅳ_4, exhibited more potent cytotoxicity than positive drugs.

When using computer-aided translation systems in a typical, professional translation workflow, there are several stages at which there is room for improvement. The SCATE (Smart Computer-Aided Translation Environment) project investigated several of these aspects, both from a human-computer interaction point of view, as well as from a purely technological side. This paper describes the SCATE research with respect to improved fuzzy matching, parallel treebanks, the integration of translation memories with machine translation, quality estimation, terminology extraction from comparable texts, the use of speech recognition in the translation process, and human computer interaction and interface design for the professional translation environment. For each of these topics, we describe the experiments we performed and the conclusions drawn, providing an overview of the highlights of the entire SCATE project.

Computer simulation is an alternative to fill the gaps where the experiment is pricy or limited in engineering. Computer simulation is a high-fidelity computational technique that can work as an engineering innovation tool to try imaginative ideas beyond the available technologies. The accuracy of current computer simulation results is reliable enough to accelerate innovation for new materials and mechanical technologies without experimental validation. So, we may need to urge relying on computer simulation results without any experimental validation to accelerate engineering innovations. In addition, using high-fidelity computer simulation for engineering innovation acceleration without validation will be promoted if it is credited as a new classification. This subject and a related justification's classification in engineering have been discussed.

Customized wrist splints, particularly for upper extremity orthoses like wrist support braces, are commonly used across numerous clinical scenarios. However, the traditional process for producing personalized wrist splints is largely manual and highly dependent on the expertise of orthopedic specialists. This experience-based approach often leads to suboptimal outcomes, necessitating further refinement of the designs. Recent advancements in Additive Manufacturing (AM) have brought significant innovation to various industries, including orthopedics. This study aims to present a comprehensive methodology that integrates advanced design tools ,like 3D Scanning, with digital manufacturing techniques to produce tailored wrist splints. The produced hand brace aims to offer enhanced mechanical performance and comfort by precisely fitting an individual’s anatomy while minimizing material usage and weight. To achieve optimal design efficiency, the study explores the application of a Topology Optimization (TO) approach for design, while the manufacturing process utilizes Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), an evolving technology within the Additive Manufacturing (AM) sector.

In the extended malfatti problem, the numbers of circles in the triangle are triangle numbers, because the tangency properties among the internal circles and 3 sides of the triangle have special type of structure. That is, the corner circle tangent to two sides of the triangle and two boundary circles, the boundary circles tangent to one side of the triangle and 4 other circles, and the inner circles always tangent to 6 other circles. The circles we find in extended general Malfatti’s problem has the property that the smallest radius and the largest radius for the circle has big difference. In this paper, we proposed algorithms to solve the problem that the tangency properties among circles and sides of triangle is not fixed, so that the number of circles in the triangle is not necessary a triangle numbers. The purpose of this change is try to find the radii of the circles in the triangle is within a small range.

In this study, a simple machine learning-based quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) model was developed to predict the inhibitory potency (pIC50 values) of FLT3 tyrosine kinase inhibitors, pivotal in treating Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). Distinctively, our model leverages an extensive and diverse dataset, 14 times larger than those employed in prior studies within this field, enabling an unparalleled scope of compound analysis. This vast dataset, combined with further exploration of molecular descriptors, enabled predictions of extraordinary precision, covering a broader spectrum of FLT3 inhibitors than was previously possible. The Random Forest Regressor (RFR) algorithm, selected for its superior predictive performance, was trained with 1080 inputs and validated through comprehensive external and internal methods. It achieved an remarkable coefficient of determination (R^2) of 0.941 and a standard deviation of 0.235 on a test set of 270 compounds, highlighting the efficacy of model in predicting FLT3 inhibitory activity. Key molecular descriptors were identified, enhancing our understanding of structural requirements for inhibitor potency. Additionally, we developed a user-friendly computational tool that enables the rapid prediction of pIC50 values. Utilizing this tool, potential FLT3 inhibitors were identified through ligand-based virtual screening. This study represents a major advancement in FLT3 inhibitor discovery by utilizing a simple QSAR-machine learning model. It enables more efficient and precise identification of potential drug candidates at an early stage, promising a faster development of targeted therapies and streamlining the ligand-based drug design process.

This thesis presents the effects of work done on a software project for generative models and spreadsheets, allowing for a quick creation of the conceptual model of the aircraft. The subject of the work is a response to the current trends and needs prevailing in the field of computer design engineering CAD and aviation. In the initial chapters, theoretical issues related to the work being carried out were introduced and the methodology of creating software for construction and verification of the structure of aircraft along with the needs of interchange between databases of generative models was presented. In the next stages, the concepts and selected solutions for the user interface supporting the knowledge base were presented along with a set of procedures for its operation. Furthermore, the method of database integration with the methods of determining design features for the developed generative models and with the Siemens NX system. Furthermore, problems encountered in software development, as well as solution examples for model application are specified. The results obtained and the models generated on their basis were subjected to a strength analysis using Autodesk Inventor software and analysed in terms of meeting the initial assumptions. In the end, conclusions and observations resulting from the effects of the work presented in the project were formulated.

Despite the fact that COVID-19 is no longer a global pandemic due to development and integration of different technologies for the diagnosis and treatment of the disease. Technological advancement in the field of molecular biology, electronics, computer science, artificial intelligence, Internet of Things, nanotechnology etc. has led to the development of molecular approaches and computer aided diagnosis for the detection of COVID-19. This study provides a holistic approach on COVID-19 detection based on (1) molecular diagnosis which include RT-PCR, antigen-antibody and CRISPR-based biosensors and (2) computer aided detection based on AI-driven models which include Deep Learning and Transfer learning approach. The review also provide comparison between these 2 emerging technologies and open research issues for the development of smart-IoMT-enable platform for the detection of COVID-19.

Deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been widely used in various medical imaging tasks. However, due to the intrinsic locality of convolution operation, CNNs generally cannot model long-range dependencies well, which are important for accurately identifying breast cancer from unregistered multi-view mammograms. This motivates us to leverage the architecture of Vision Transformers to capture long-range relationships of multiple mammograms from the same patient. For this purpose, we employ local Transformer blocks to separately learn patch relationships within a specific view (CC/MLO) of one side (right/left) of mammogram. The outputs from different views and sides are concatenated and fed into global Transformer blocks, to jointly learn patch relationships between two different views of the left and right breasts. To evaluate the proposed model, we retrospectively assembled a dataset involving 949 sets of CC and MLO view mammograms, which include 470 malignant cases and 479 normal or benign cases. We trained and evaluated the model using a five-fold cross-validation method. Without any arduous preprocessing steps (e.g., optimal window cropping, chest wall or pectoral muscle removal, two-view image registration, etc.), our two-view Transformer-based model achieves lesion classification accuracy of 77.0% and area under ROC curve (AUC = 0.814), outperforming state-of-the-art multi-view CNNs by 3.1% and 3%, respectively. Meanwhile, the new two-view model improves mammographic case classification accuracies of two single-view models by 7.4% (CC) and 4.5% (MLO), respectively. The promising results unveil the great potential of using Transformers to develop high-performing computer-aided diagnosis (CADx) schemes of mammography.

Melanoma is considered to be the most aggressive form of skin cancer. Due to the similar shape of malignant and benign cancerous lesions, doctors spend considerably more time when diagnosing these findings. At present, the evaluation of malignancy is performed primarily by invasive histological examination of the suspicious lesion. Developing an accurate classifier for early and efficient detection can minimize and monitor the harmful effects of skin cancer and increase patient survival rates. This paper proposes a multi-class classification task using the CoAtNet architecture, a hybrid model that combines the depthwise convolution matrix operation of traditional convolutional neural networks with the strengths of Transformer models and self-attention mechanics to achieve better generalization and capacity. The proposed multi-class classifier achieves an overall precision of 0.901, recall 0.895, and AP 0.923, indicating high performance compared to other state-of-the-art networks.

As a relatively high percentage of adenoma polyps are missed, a computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) tool based on deep learning can aid the endoscopist in diagnosing colorectal polyps or colorectal cancer in order to decrease polyps missing rate and prevent colorectal cancer mortality. Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is a deep learning method and has achieved better results in detecting and segmenting specific objects in images in the last decade than conventional models such as regression, support vector machines or artificial neural networks. In recent years, based on the studies in medical imaging criteria, CNN models have acquired promising results in detecting masses and lesions in various body organs, including colorectal polyps. In this review, the structure and architecture of CNN models and how colonoscopy images are processed as input and converted to the output are explained in detail. In most primary studies conducted in the colorectal polyp detection and classification field, the CNN model has been regarded as a black box since the calculations performed at different layers in the model training process have not been clarified precisely. Furthermore, I discuss the differences between the CNN and conventional models, inspect how to train the CNN model for diagnosing colorectal polyps or cancer, and evaluate model performance after the training process.

In this article, we analyse the computer aid screening method of COVID19 using Xray and CT scan images. The main objective is to set an analytical closure about the computer aid screening of COVID19 among the X-ray image and CT scan image. The computer aid screening method includes deep feature extraction, transfer learning and traditional machine learning image classification approach. The deep feature extraction and transfer learning method considered 13 pre-trained CNN model. The machine learning approach includes three sets of features and three classifiers. The pre-trained CNN models are alexnet, googlenet, vgg16, vgg19, densenet201, resnet18, resnet50, resnet101, inceptionv3, inceptionresnetv2, xception, mobilenetv2 and shufflenet. The features and classifiers in machine learning approaches are GLCM, LBP, HOG and KNN, SVM, Naive bay’s respectively. In addition, we also analyse the different paradigms of classifiers. In total, the comparative analysis is carried out in 65 classification models, i.e. 13 in deep feature extraction, 13 in transfer learning and 39 in machine learning approaches. Finally, all the classification models perform better in X-ray image set compare to CT scan image set.

In all areas of medicine, especially in radiology, computers are increasing year by year. Filmless radiology, speech recognition software, electronic application forms, and teleradiology are recent developments that have greatly improved radiologists' performance. This research explores radiology software trends, predictions, and the challenges posed by informatics and historical trend analysis. The rationale behind this research is that information technology (IT) is overgrowing almost every day. We must continuously seek new ways to apply IT to make more use of resources. Consequently, IT becomes increasingly crucial to radiology organizations' innovative thinking, workflow, and business models. This study aimed to analyze all radiology software publications in the Science Citation Index (SCI). From 1991 to July 2021, SCI was used to search for publications systematically. We have also widely used this historical method in radiology software research. The findings and discussions are base on an assessment of trends, predictions, contributions, and challenges in radiology software, and we are exploring radiology software with six evolutionary stages. The gift of this research is that radiology managers realize that the use of new information technologies is closely related to survival in a competitive environment. Radiology companies can review these new technologies to develop more innovative business models and services to improve operational deficiencies.

Deep Neutral Networks (DNNs) were initially proposed towards the midst of the 20th century, motivated by the neural structure and mechanism of the human brain. Thanks to major ad-vancements in computational resources, during the past decade DNN-based systems have demonstrated unprecedented performance in terms of accuracy and speed. However, recent work has shown that such models may not be sufficiently robust during the inference process. Furthermore, due to the data-driven learning nature of DNNs, designing interpretable and gen-eralizable networks is a major challenge, especially in critical applications, such as medical Computer Aided Diagnostics (CAD) and other medical imaging tasks, including classification, regression and reconstruction. Within this context, a line of physics-driven approaches for deep learning has recently emerged, aimed at improving the stability and generalization capacity of DNNs for medical imaging applications. In this paper, we review recent work focused on phys-ics-driven or prior-information learning for a variety of imaging modalities and medical applica-tions. We discuss how the inclusion of domain-related knowledge into the learning process and networks’ design supports their stability and generalization capability. In addition, we highlight current and future challenges within this scope.

Uncontrolled and fast cell proliferation is the cause of brain tumors. Early cancer detection is vitally important in order to save many lives. Brain tumors can be divided into several categories depending on the kind, place of origin, pace of development, and stage of progression; as a result, tumor classification is crucial for targeted therapy. The aim of brain tumor segmentation is to accurately delineate the areas of the brain. A specialist with a thorough understanding of brain illnesses must manually identify the proper type of brain tumor. Additionally, processing a lot of images takes time and is tiresome. Therefore, automatic segmentation and classification techniques are required to speed up and enhance the diagnosis of brain tumors. Tumors can be quickly and safely detected by brain scans using imaging modalities, including computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and others. Machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) have shown promise in the development of algorithms that aid in automatic classification and segmentation utilizing various imaging modalities. This review discussed various types of brain tumors, publicly accessible datasets, enhancement methods, segmentation, feature extraction, classification, machine learning techniques, and deep learning, learning through transfer, for the study of brain tumors.

This comprehensive review unfolds a detailed narrative of Artificial Intelligence (AI) making its foray into radiology, a move that is catalysing transformational shifts in the healthcare landscape. It sheds light on the journey of radiology, from the pioneering discovery of X-rays to today’s intricate imaging technologies, infused with machine learning and deep learning in medical image analysis. At the crux of this review lies an in-depth study of AI applications in radiology, elucidating its seminal roles in image segmentation, computer-aided diagnosis, predictive analytics, and workflow optimisation. A spotlight is cast on the profound impact of AI on diagnostic processes, personalised medicine, and clinical workflows, with empirical evidence derived from a series of case studies across multiple medical disciplines. However, the integration of AI in radiology is not devoid of challenges. The review ventures into the labyrinth of obstacles that are inherent to AI-driven radiology — data quality, the ’black box’ enigma, infrastructural and technical complexities, as well as ethical implications. Peering into the future, the review contends that the road ahead for AI in radiology is paved with promising opportunities. It advocates for continuous research, embracing avant-garde imaging technologies, and fostering robust collaborations between radiologists and AI developers. It concludes by firmly cementing the role of AI as a catalyst for change in radiology, a stance that is firmly rooted in sustained innovation, dynamic partnerships, and a steadfast commitment to ethical responsibility.

The prompt and accurate diagnosis of breast lesions, including the distinction between cancer, non-cancer, and suspicious cancer, plays a crucial role in the prognosis of breast cancer. In this paper, we introduce a novel method based on feature extraction and reduction for detection of breast cancer in mammography images. First, we extract features from multiple pre-trained convolutional neural network (CNN) models, and then concatenate them. The most informative features are selected based on their mutual information with the target variable. Subsequently, the selected features can be classified using a machine learning algorithm. We evaluate our approach using four different machine learning algorithms, and our results demonstrate that the neural network-based classifier yields an accuracy as high as 92% for the RSNA dataset which is a new dataset that provides two views and additional features such as age. We compare our proposed algorithm with state-of-the-art methods and demonstrate its superiority, particularly in terms of accuracy and sensitivity. For the MIAS dataset, we achieve an accuracy as high as 94.5%, and for the DDSM dataset, an accuracy of 96% is attained. These results highlight the effectiveness of our method in accurately diagnosing breast lesions and surpassing existing approaches.

Production flexibility is a key area that can enhance the sustainability of manufacturing industries as it can ensure product availability, scalability, agility/fault tolerance as well as disaster recovery potentials. Technological advancements have provided avenues where companies can enhance virtually all aspects of their operations for efficiency, effectiveness, and productivity. This paper uses both quantitative and qualitative research approach to identify the capability requirements for smart and effective production management and subsequent analysis is done using Multi-Criteria Decision-Making methodology to identify and rank various industry 4.0 technologies and concepts that can provide these smart capabilities in in manufacturing industries to aid the businesses to achieve sustainability with production flexibility. The paper identifies over 12 smart capabilities and 9 Industry 4.0 Technologies which are applicable to production management. It also compares results from the analytics of historical I4.0 implementation as discussed in literatures with the current state as deduces from survey feedbacks from various manufacturing industries.

The cell concentration measurement on a culture assay using bioimpedance is a very useful tool, but it is complex to translate impedance to cell concentration values. The purpose of this work is to find a method to obtain in real time the cell concentration values for a given cell-culture assay using an oscillator as the measurement circuit. From a basic cell-electrode model, enhanced models of the cell culture immersed in a saline solution (culture medium) can be derived. These models can be used in a fitting routine to real time estimation of the cell concentration in a cell culture, using the oscillation frequency and amplitude delivered by measurement circuits proposed by the authors. Based on real experimental data (frequency and amplitude of oscillations) obtained by connecting the cell culture to an oscillator as a load, the fitting routine is simulated, and real time data of cell concentration is achieved. These results are compared with concentration data found by traditional optical methods for counting. In addition, the error obtained is divided and analyzed in two parts: in the first part of the experiment (when the few cells are adapting to the culture medium) and the second part of the experiment (when the cells grow exponentially until they completely cover the well).Low error values are obtained in the growth phase of the cell culture (the relevant phase), therefore the results obtained are considered to be promising, proving that the fitting routine is valid, and that the cell concentration can be measured in real time using an oscillator.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer mortality worldwide, and it is urgently necessary to diagnose it as early as possible. Usually, the diagnostic process begins with a radiological examination which, when a possible tumour is present, is followed by a biopsy to extract tissue samples from the patient's lungs. Therefore, the purpose of this study is the development of an artificial intelligence algorithm that will analyse the Whole Slide Image (WSI) generated by the digitisation of the glass slides obtained from the extracted samples and detect if there is a tumour. The developed learning algorithms as well as the tested neural networks (NNs) were trained on a dataset composed of previously annotated WSI tiles, classified as Tumour or Non-Tumour. From these, four developed convolutional neural networks stood out and were selected to be compared with each other and with the tested NNs. When the best result of each of the developed architectures was compared to the highest result of the tested NNs, it was possible to denote that version 4 of CancerDetecNN achieved an average accuracy of 89.749 \% and an average loss of 0.220. Furthermore, the results for the four selected versions are in agreement with the results reported in the literature, however, the limited size of the given dataset must be considered. Given the results obtained, the fourth version has the potential to optimise the lung cancer diagnosis process.

Objective: Radiomics and deep transfer learning are two popular technologies used to develop computer-aided detection and diadnosis (CAD) schemes of medical images. This study aims to investigate and compare advantages and potential limitations of applying these two technologies in developing CAD schemes. Methods: A relatively large and diverse retrospective dataset including 3,000 digital mammograms is assembled in which 1,496 images depict malignant lesions and 1,054 images depict benign lesions. Two CAD schemes are developed to classify breast lesions. The first scheme is developed using four steps namely, applying an adaptive multi-layer topographic region growing algorithm to segment lesions, computing initial radiomics features, applying a principal component algorithm to generate an optimal feature vector, and building a support vector machine classifier. The second CAD scheme is built based a pre-trained residual net architecture (ResNet50) as a transfer learning model to classify breast lesions. Both CAD schemes are trained and tested using a 10-fold cross-validation method. Several score fusion methods are also investigated to classify breast lesions. CAD classification performance is evaluated by the area under ROC curve (AUC). Results: ResNet50 model-based CAD scheme yields AUC = 0.85±0.02, which is significantly higher than radiomics feature-based CAD scheme with AUC = 0.77±0.02 (p < 0.01). Additionally, fusion of classification scores generated by two CAD schemes does not further improve classification performance. Conclusion: This study indicates that using deep transfer learning is more efficient to develop CAD schemes and enables to yield higher lesion classification performance than CAD schemes developed using radiomics-based technology.

Manual interpretation of these huge amounts of image volumes are susceptible to inter-reader variability and human error. Thus, accurate automated CAD scheme is highly desirable in clinical pathological diagnosis. In this research, plethora of machine learning paradigms (e.g. feature extraction, dimensionality reduction and supervised classification methods) were explored, evaluated, compared and analyzed to identify the optimal pathway for brain MR images (normal vs neoplastic) binary classification task. External validation dataset was used to test the generalizability of the optimal predictive models implemented. Relevant and informative features were selected to construct cross-validated decision tree and eventually simple rule set was built based on the decision tree. The experimental results show that almost all pattern recognition paradigms achieve high accuracy with careful selection of number of attributes. LDA+ELM with 55 features are the optimal pipelines which achieve perfect classification when training and test data are of same source; and achieving (accuracy=97.5%, AUC=0.989, sensitivity=95% and specificity=100%) under balanced test dataset; (accuracy=99.5%, AUC=0.988, sensitivity=95% and specificity=100%). Cross-validated decision tree model also shows comparable performance: accuracy=98.8%, AUC=99.1%, sensitivity=99.6% and specificity=98.2%. Three highly relevant and robust attributes are visualized and selected for construction of decision tree models and finally a rule sets are read directly off the decision tree. This rule sets can potentially serve as fast and accurate classification algorithm.

Lung cancer is a deadly disease if not diagnosed in its early stages. However, early detection of lung cancer is a challenging task due to the shape and size of its nodules. Radiologists need support from automated tools for precise opinion. Automated detection of the affected lungs nodule is difficult because of the shape similarity among healthy tissues. Over the years, several expert systems have been developed that help radiologists to diagnose lung cancer. In this article, we propose a framework to precisely detect lungs cancer by classifying it between benign and malignant nodules. The framework is tested using the subset of the publicly available at the Lung Image Database Consortium image collection (LIDC-IDRI). Multiple techniques including filtering and noise removing are applied for pre-processing. Subsequently, the OTSU and the semantic segmentation are used to accurately detect the unhealthy lungs nodules. In total, 13 nodules features were extracted using Principal Components Analysis (PCA) algorithm. Four optimal features are selected based on the classification performance. In the classification phase, 9 different classifiers are used along with two types of validation schemes i.e. train test holdout validation with 70-30 data split and 10 fold cross-validation. Our experiments show that the proposed system provides 99.23\% accuracy using logic boost classifier.

Diffuse interstitial lung diseases (DILD) are a heterogeneous group of over 200 entities, some with dramatical evolution and poor prognostic. Because of their overlapping clinical, physiopathological and imagistic nature, successful management requires early detection and proper progression evaluation. This paper tests a complex networks (CN) algorithm for imagistic aided diagnosis fitness for the possibility of achieving relevant and novel DILD management data. 65 DILD and 31 normal high resolution computer tomography (HRCT) scans were selected and analyzed with the CN model. The algorithm is showcased in two case reports and then statistical analysis on the entire lot shows that a CN algorithm quantifies progression evaluation with a very fine accuracy, surpassing functional parameters’ variations. The CN algorithm can also be successfully used for early detection, mainly on the ground glass opacity Hounsfield Units band of the scan.

The human mandible's cancellous bone, which is characterized by its unique porosity and directional sensitivity to external forces, is crucial for sustaining biting stress. Traditional CAD models fail to fully represent bone's anisotropic structure and thus depend on simple isotropic assumptions. For our research, we use the latest versions of nTopology and Creo Parametric software to make biomimetic Voronoi lattice models that accurately reflect the complex geometry and mechanical properties of trabecular bone. The porosity of human cancellous bone is accurately modeled in this work using biomimetic Voronoi lattice models. The porosities range from 70% to 95%, which can be achieved by changing the pore sizes to 1.0 mm, 1.5 mm, 2.0 mm, and 2.5 mm. Finite element analysis (FEA) was used to examine the displacements, stresses, and strains acting on dental implants with a buttress thread, abutment, retaining screw, and biting load surface. The results show that the Voronoi model accurately depicts the complex anatomy of the trabecular bone in the human jaw, compared to standard solid block models. The ideal pore size for biomimetic Voronoi lattice trabecular bone models is 2 mm, taking into account both the von Mises stress distribution over the dental implant, screw retention, cortical bone, cancellous bone, and micromotions. This pore size displayed balanced performance by successfully matching natural bone's mechanical characteristics. Advanced finite element analysis (FEA) improves biomechanical understanding of how bones and implants interact by creating more accurate models of biological problems and dynamic loading situations. This makes biomechanical engineering better.

Thanks to the continued development of experimental structural biology and the half-a-century old Protein Data Bank, 2021 saw a big step forward in the development of protein structure prediction with deep learning algorithms. Recently, DeepMinds AlphaFold has determined the structures of ∼ 200 million proteins from 1 million species. The speed of this progress raise the question of what becomes possible for computational drug discovery and design when we have a systems-wide account of the structures and motions of most proteins. Therefore, this article puts forward the concept of a general intermolecular binding affinity calculator (GIBAC): Kd = f(molA, molB, envPara), towards the acceleration of traditional computer-aided drug design (CADD) and artificial intelligence-integrated drug discovery (AIDD), for both small molecules and biologics such as therapeutic proteins.

Pure orbital blowout fractures occur within the confines of the internal orbital wall. Restoration of orbital form and volume is paramount to prevent functional and esthetic impairment. The anatomical peculiarity of the orbit has encouraged surgeons to develop implants with customized features to restore its architecture. This has resulted in worldwide clinical demand for patient-specific implants (PSIs) designed to fit precisely in the patient's unique anatomy. Fused filament fabrication (FFF) three-dimensional (3D) printing technology has enabled the fabrication of implant-grade polymers such as Polyetheretherketone (PEEK), paving the way for a more sophisticated generation of biomaterials. This study evaluates the FFF 3D printed PEEK orbital mesh customized implants with a metric considering the relevant design, biomechanical, and morphological parameters. The performance of the implants is studied as a function of varying thicknesses and porous design constructs through a finite element (FE) based computational model and a decision matrix based statistical approach. The maximum stress values achieved in our results predict the high durability of the implants, and the maximum deformation values were under one-tenth of a millimeter (mm) domain in all the implant profile configurations. The circular patterned implant (0.9 mm) had the best performance score. The study demonstrates that compounding multi-design computational analysis with 3D printing can be beneficial for the optimal restoration of the orbital floor.

Medical brain image analysis is a necessary step in the Computers Assisted /Aided Diagnosis (CAD) systems. Advancements in both hardware and software in the past few years have led to improved segmentation and classification of various diseases. In the present work, we review the published literature on systems and algorithms that allow for classification, identification, and detection of White Matter Hyperintensities (WMHs) of brain MRI images specifically in cases of ischemic stroke and demyelinating diseases. For the selection criteria, we used the bibliometric networks. Out of a total of 140 documents we selected 38 articles that deal with the main objectives of this study. Based on the analysis and discussion of the revised documents, there is constant growth in the research and proposal of new models of deep learning to achieve the highest accuracy and reliability of the segmentation of ischemic and demyelinating lesions. Models with indicators (Dice Score, DSC: 0.99) were found, however with little practical application due to the uses of small datasets and lack of reproducibility. Therefore, the main conclusion is to establish multidisciplinary research groups to overcome the gap between CAD developments and their complete utilization in the clinical environment.

Alzheimer’s is a degenerative brain condition brought on by intricate brain changes after cell injury. The prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease is highest in those over 65. Presently, AD is detected by manual examination of a patient’s Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan and neuropsychological assessments. Due to its subpar accuracy and performance, solutions based on artificial intelligence (AI) have not been made more widely available. This paper proposes a deep Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) with the pre-trained MobileNet-V2 architecture as the model’s base for feature extraction and reducing the parameter size and training time. The proposed model accurately classifies various early stages of AD. The proposed approach visualizes the class activation maps in the form of a heat map on brain MRI scans via the Grad-CAM algorithm that lifts the black-box nature of the deep model. To handle the imbalance problem of the AD data set acquired from Kaggle, the oversampling algorithm SMOTE interpolates new images to even the class samples. The proposed multi-class classification deep model is named Bio-AD and evaluated using different quality metrics. The Bio-AD model has the following values for evaluation metrics: 97.92%, 99.87%, 97.87%, 98%, 98%, and 0.0646 for accuracy, Area Under the Curve (AUC), F1-score, Precision, Recall, and loss respectively. The proposed Bio-AD model is compared with DenseNet-169, VGG-19, and InceptionResNet-V2 using different quality metrics and outperformed in comparison with all other models using the AD data set.

Recent advancements in semantic communication (SC) have shown the potential to surpass the limitations of the Shannon theorem, by leveraging an understanding of the meaning of data instead of the data itself. In networks, data-aided sensing (DAS) presents a powerful tool that can significantly reduce communication overhead, aligning perfectly with the goals of SC by providing more powerful semantic messages. This survey explores the synergy between DAS and SC and investigates how their convergence can lead to more efficient and effective communication.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing decision-making procedures in healthcare information systems (HIS), increasing the efficacy, accuracy, and personalization of healthcare. Notwithstanding remarkable progresses, yet there remain gaps in the holistic comprehension and implication of AI-driven technologies across various HIS scenarios. These gaps, consisting limited integration of AI across a variety of HIS parts and inadequate emphasize on interpretability and privacy, motivate our study to conduct a structured evaluation of recent AI applications in this domain. In this study, we present a novel taxonomy for the AI implication in medical decision-making. We analyzed 30 articles and categorized them into six groups including: Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSS), Predictive Analytics, Natural Language Processing (NLP), Computer-Aided Diagnostics (CAD), Robotic-Assisted Surgery, and Virtual Health Assistants (VHAs/chatbots). Our study aims to propose a holistic perspective of the fast evolving perspective of AI in HIS. The majority of the investigated studies were published from 2023 and 2022, with Springer as the leading publisher (33%). Python and MATLAB were the most well-known simulation languages, applied in 48% and 20% of the papers, respectively, reflecting the technical trends in the area. By emphasizing on pivotal criteria like interpretability, accuracy, and privacy, this research aims to elucidate the crucial issues and development driving AI-driven decision-making in HIS.

Three-dimensional (3D) printing technologies are transforming the design and manufacture of components and products across a variety of disciplines, however their application in the construction industry is still limited. Material deposition processes can achieve infinite geometries and have advanced from rapid prototyping and model-scale markets to their application in fabricating functional products, large objects and the construction of full-scale buildings. Many international projects have recently been realized and the construction industry is beginning to utilise these dynamic technologies. The potential advantages for integrating 3D printing into house construction are significant, these include the capacity for mass customization of designs and parameters for functional and aesthetic purposes, reduction in construction waste from highly precise material placement, and the use of recycled waste products in layer deposition materials. With the ultimate goal of improving construction efficiency and decreasing building costs, applying Strand7 Finite Element Analysis software, a numerical model was designed specifically for 3D printing in a cement mix incorporated with recycled waste product High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) and found that construction of an arched truss-like roof was structurally feasible without the need for steel reinforcements. The lab sizes prototypes were manufactured based on the destined numerical model by using a 3D printing technology. Currently available 3D printing technologies can be adopted for building construction and this paper discusses the applications, advantages, limitations and future directions of 3D printing as an innovative and viable solution for affordable house construction.

In recent years, news media has been greatly disrupted by the potential of technologically driven approaches in the creation, production, and distribution of news products and services. Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged from the realm of science fiction and has become a very real tool that can aid society in addressing many issues, including the challenges faced by the news industry. The ubiquity of computing has become apparent and has demonstrated the different approaches that can be achieved using AI. We analyzed the news industry’s AI adoption based on the seven subfields of AI: (i) machine learning; (ii) computer vision (CV); (iii) speech recognition; (iv) natural language processing (NLP); (v) planning, scheduling, and optimization; (vi) expert systems; and (vii) robotics. Our findings suggest that three subfields are being developed more in the news media: machine learning, computer vision, as well as planning, scheduling, and optimization. Other areas have not been fully deployed in the journalistic field. Most AI news projects rely on funds from tech companies such as Google. This limits AI’s potential to a small number of players in the news industry. We make conclusions by providing examples of how these subfields are being developed in journalism and present an agenda for future research.

Computer vision is considered as an ally to solve business problems that require human intervention, intelligence and criteria. This topic of research has evolved in XXI century at faster peace, delivering various alternatives from open source until commercial platforms. With so many options and market growing, it result difficult to make a decision on which one to use, or even worse, realize it was not suited for different scenarios. In this paper we analyze five options selected arbitrarily and tested on a dataset of 755 images to detect persons in an image, using object detectors. We analyze elapsed time to process an image, error with observations by humans, number of persons detected, correlation of time and person density, object detected size and F1 Score, considering precision and recall. As we found there are score ties and similar behaviors among options available, we introduce a novel index that takes in consideration the number of persons and their pixel size, to propose the Vision Acuity Index of Computer Vision. The results demonstrate this is a good option to serve as indicator to make decisions. Also, this index proposed have a potential to be expanded for different business use cases, and to measure new proposed algorithms in the future along with the traditional metrics used previously.

To enhance system reliability and mitigate vulnerabilities of the Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), it is common to fuse the Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) and visual sensors with the GNSS receiver in the navigation system design, effectively enabling compensations with absolute position and reducing data gaps. To address shortcomings of traditional Kalman Filter (KF) such as sensor error, imperfect nonlinear system model, and KF estimation error, a GRU-aided ESKF architecture is proposed to enhance positioning performance. This study conducts Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) to priories and identify the potential faults in the urban environment facilitating the design of improved fault-tolerant system architecture. The identified primary fault events are data association error and navigation environment error during fault conditions of feature mismatch, especially in the presence of multiple failure modes. A hybrid federated navigation system architecture is employed using a Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) to predict state increments for updating the state vector in the Error Estate Kalman Filter (ESKF) measurement step. The proposed algorithm’s performance is evaluated in a simulation environment in MATLAB under multiple visually degraded conditions. Comparative results provide evidence that the GRU-aided ESKF outperforms standard ESKF and state-of-the-art solutions like VINS-Mono, End-to-End VIO, and Self-Supervised VIO, exhibiting higher efficiency in complex environments.

The effects of partial replacement of Si by Al on the microstructure, tensile properties, and Charpy impact toughness were investigated using 0.2%C-Si/Al-Mn-Cr-B TRIP-aided martensitic steels. The impact toughness was related to the microstructural and mechanical properties. The partial re-placement decreased the volume fraction of retained austenite and increased the mechanical stabil-ity, accompanied by softening and an increase in the volume fraction of the primary martensite. Resultantly, the partial replacement decreased strength and ductility. The impact absorbed energy (value) at 25 C was slightly increased by the partial replacement. The increased impact absorbed energy was mainly caused by high crack/void propagation energy due to the softened primary martensite and a small contribution of the stabilized retained austenite. The 50% shear fracture ductile-to-brittle transition temperature was marginally raised by the partial replacement. The raised transition temperature was mainly associated with an increase in a unit crack path of qua-si-cleavage/cleavage fracture.

For W-band long-range mm-wave wireless transmission systems, nonlinearity issues resulting from photoelectric devices, optical fiber, and wireless power amplifiers can be handled by deep learning equalization algorithms. Besides, the PS technique is considered an effective measure to further increase the capacity of the modulation-constraint channel. However, since the proba-bilistic distribution of m-QAM varies with the amplitude, there have been difficulties in learning valuable information from the minority class. This limits the gain of nonlinear equalization. To overcome the imbalanced machine learning problem, we propose a novel two-lane DNN (TLD) equalizer with the random over-sampling (ROS) technique in this paper. The combination of PS at the transmitter and ROS at the receiver improves the overall performance of the W-band wireless transmission system, and our 4.6-km ROF delivery experiment verifies its effectiveness for the W-band mm-wave PS-16QAM system. Based on our proposed equalization scheme, we realize single-channel 10-Gbaud W-band PS-16QAM wireless transmission over 100 m optical fiber link and 4.6-km wireless air-free distance. The results show that compared with the typical TLD without ROS, the TLD-ROS can improve the receiver sensitivity by 1dB. Furthermore, a reduction of 45.6% in complexity is realized, and training samples can be reduced by 15.5%. Considering the actual wireless physical layer with its requirements, there is much to be gained from the joint use of deep learning and balanced data pre-processing techniques.

The proliferation of intelligent monitoring devices has led to the widespread adoption of background extraction technology across a multitude of domains, including intelligent transportation, video surveillance, human-computer interaction, and medical diagnosis. In this work, the model employs a multi-layer convolutional neural network structure, which enables the extraction and fusion of scene features from different scales in a layer-by-layer manner. This approach facilitates the comprehensive capture of complex scene information. The convolutional network comprises multiple layers, with each layer responsible for extracting features at a specific scale. The shallower layers capture more detailed feature information, whereas the deeper layers focus on more global scene features. The strategy of multi-scale feature fusion allows the model to fully capture multi-level and multi-dimensional information in the context of large-scale scenes. Furthermore, the incorporation of an attention mechanism enables the model to adaptively allocate attention to salient regions, thereby enhancing its capacity to discern intricate scenes by assigning greater significance to pivotal features. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method is effective in practice, as evidenced by its performance on public datasets.

Engineering of quantum computers requires reliable characterization of qubits, quantum operations, and even the entire hardware. Quantum tomography is an indispensable framework in quantum characterization, verification, and validation (QCVV), which has been widely accepted by researchers. According to the tomographic target, quantum tomography can be categorized into quantum state tomography (QST), quantum process tomography (QPT), gate set tomography (GST), process tensor tomography (PTT), and instrument set tomography (IST). Standard quantum tomography toolkits generally consist of basic linear inverse methods and statistical maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) based methods. Furthermore, the performance of standard methods, including effectiveness and efficiency, has been further developed by exploiting Bayesian estimation, neural networks, matrix completion techniques, etc. In this review, we introduce the fundamental quantum tomography techniques, including QST, QPT, GST, PTT, and IST. We first introduce the details of basic linear inverse methods. Then, the framework of MLE methods with constraints is summarized. Finally, we briefly introduce recent further research in developing the performance of tomography. This review provides a primary getting-start in developing quantum tomography, which promotes quantum computer development.

After the great success of Mobile wallet, the Internet of Things (IoT) leaves the door wide open for consumers to use their connected devices to access their bank accounts and perform routine banking activities from anywhere, anytime and with any device. However, consumers need to feel safe when interacting with IoT-based payment systems, and their personal information should be protected as much as possible. Unlike as usually done in the literature, in this paper, we introduce two lightweight and secure IoT-based payment protocols based on an identity-based signature scheme. We adopt a server-aided verification technique to construct the first scheme. This technique allows to outsource the heavy computation overhead on the sensor node to a cloud server while maintaining the user's privacy. The second scheme is built upon a pairing-free ECC-based security protocol to avoid the heavy computational complexity of bilinear pairing operations. The security reduction results of both schemes are held in the Random Oracle Model (ROM) under the discrete logarithm and computational Diffie-Hellman assumptions. Finally, we experimentally compare the proposed schemes against each other and against the original scheme on the most commonly used IoT devices: a smartphone, a smartwatch and the embedded device Raspberry Pi. Compared with existing schemes, our proposed schemes achieve significant efficiency in the term of communication and computational overheads

The aim of this study is to develop a software solution for real-time recognition of sign language words using two arms. This will enable communication between hearing-impaired individuals and those who can hear. Several sign language recognition systems have been developed using different technologies, including cameras, armbands, and gloves. The system developed in this study utilizes surface electromyography (muscle activity) and inertial measurement unit (motion dynamics) data from both arms. Other methods often have drawbacks, such as high costs, low accuracy due to ambient light and obstacles, and complex hardware requirements, which have prevented their practical application. A software has been developed that can run on different operating systems using digital signal processing and machine learning methods specific to the study. For the test, we created a dataset of 80 words based on their frequency of use in daily life and performed a thorough feature extraction process. We tested the recognition performance using various classifiers and parameters and compared the results. The Random Forest algorithm was found to have the highest success rate with 99.875% accuracy, while the Naive Bayes algorithm had the lowest success rate with 87.625% accuracy. Feedback from a test group of 10 people indicated that the system is user-friendly, aesthetically appealing, and practically useful. The new system enables smoother communication for people with hearing disabilities and promises seamless integration into daily life without compromising user comfort or lifestyle quality.

The computer program "Histropy" is an interactive Python program for the quantification of selected features of two-dimensional (2D) images/patterns (in either JPG/JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP, or baseline TIF/TIFF formats) by means of calculations based on the pixel intensities in this data, their histograms, and user-selected sections of those histograms. The histograms of these images display pixel-intensity values along the x-axis (of a 2D Cartesian plot), with the frequency of each intensity value within the image represented along the y-axis. The images need to be of 8-bit or 16-bit information depth and can be of arbitrary size. (Up to 1024 pixels maximum on both sides is recommended as larger images tend to significantly slow the program’s performance). Histropy generates an image’s histogram surrounded by a graphical user interface that allows one to select any range of image-pixel intensity levels, i.e. sections along the histograms’ x-axis, using either the computer mouse or numerical text entries. The program subsequently calculates the (so-called Monkey Model) Shannon entropy and root-mean-square contrast for the selected section and displays them as part of what we call a "histogram-workspace-plot." To support the visual identification of small peaks in the histograms, the user can switch between a linear and log-base-10 display scale for the y-axis of the histograms. Pixel intensity data from different images can be overlaid onto the same histogram-workspace-plot for visual comparisons. The visual outputs of the program can be saved as histogram-workspace-plots in the PNG format for future usage. The source code of the program and a brief user manual are published in the supporting materials as well as on GitHub . Instead of taking only 2D images as inputs, the program’s functionality could be extended by a few lines of code to other potential uses employing data tables with one or two dimensions in the CSV format.

Livestock marketplaces consist of infrastructure and rules through which information is exchanged and transactions are completed. Livestock trading incurs significant transaction costs, beyond just commission fees paid to marketplace owners (e.g., se-lecting, loading and transporting animals). In addition, animals being transported, held and transacted in a market setting increases the likelihood of injury or disease. The Covid-19 pandemic contributed to large-scale changes across typically physical marketplaces as stay-at-home orders and travel restrictions were invoked. Livestock marketplaces pivoted online rapidly, facilitated by the deployment of video feeds, al-lowing buyers to view/purchase animals via mobile phone. This shift offered the promise of mitigating many of the transaction costs associated with a fully physical marketplace. This study evaluated how computer vision (CV) approaches can con-tribute to the evolution of livestock marketplaces. It used livestock video data for 240 cattle (bulls) weighing 320-740 Kg from 16 different breeds to elicit additional trade-relevant data (livestock weight) and can be considered as an intermediary step to better understand how video data can be used to further digitalize livestock trade, price formation and transaction completion via technology solutions. The dataset comes from three sales held on different dates in a single mart location, which allows a consistent camera setup throughout. CV technologies were employed to solve the problem of cattle weight estimation and a distinctive achievement lies in curating a dataset cap-turing cattle in motion within the context of a cattle auction thereby injecting realism and complexity into the CV weight estimation task. Employing advanced object detection algorithms, the study created an intricate data pipeline to generate an appropriate modelling dataset and devised new multi-channel architectures for deeper analysis of diverse image inputs. The significance of sizable datasets and the challenge of man-aging inherent input variability for accurate CV regression is highlighted. Top-down view predictions demonstrate comparatively better performance, although failing to achieve benchmark precision. Challenges arise from camera angle variations, roaming behaviors, and breed diversity. Likewise, side-view predictions face challenges due to increased variability and lack of standardization. Despite this, these predictions offer insights into the value of incorporating Region of Interest (ROI) coordinates and data augmentation for enhanced performance. The study concludes with a multi-input ar-chitecture combining top-down and side-view predictions, demonstrating moderate success highlighting potential synergy between both perspectives. The central con-clusion resonates strongly – using standardized and multi-view images encompassing controlled movement and consistent poses could bolster accurate CV weight estima-tion.

The term artificial intelligence refers to the field of computer science that deals with the design and implementation of computer systems that mimic elements of human behavior that imply basic intelligence: learning, adaptability, inference, contextual understanding, and problem solving among others. Artificial intelligence is a point of intersection between multiple sciences such as computer science, psychology, philosophy, neurology, linguistics and engineering science, with the aim of synthesizing intelligent behavior, with elements of reasoning, learning and adaptation to the environment, while it is usually applied to specially made machines or computers.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical and radiographic outcomes of the All-on-4 technique in fully edentulous maxilla using R2GATE software for flapless, computer-guided surgery and immediate loading. Ten adult patients with fully edentulous maxilla, aged between 35 and 60 years, were included in the study between April 2021 and April 2022. The surgical procedure was performed under local anesthesia and followed the All-on-4 approach with immediate loading of implants using a screw-retained provisional acrylic resin prosthesis on the same day. Final prosthesis was delivered four months after the surgery. Clinical and radiographic outcomes were evaluated at four- and twelve-months post-operation. The study reported a 95% implant survival rate using the All-on-4 technique. The mean marginal bone level was recorded at 0.35 mm and 0.66 mm during the 4 and 12-month follow-up periods, respectively. Fixed provisional prosthesis fracture, abutment, and prosthesis screw loosening were the most frequent mechanical complications reported. Within the limitations of this study, the use of computer-guided surgery in the All-on-4 technique seemed to be a promising treatment option with high implant survival rates that may help reduce post-surgical discomfort and mechanical complications in the rehabilitation of the edentulous maxilla.

Background: Electrical conductivity of trabecular bone at 100 kHz was recently reported as a good predictor of bone volume fraction. However, to quantify its relationship with the free water (or physiological solution) content and between the conductivities of its constituents, is still unclear. Methods: In this contribution, in silico models inspired by microCT images of trabecular bovine samples were used to build realistic geometries. Finite Element Method was applied to solve the electrical problem and to robustly fit the conductivity of the constituents with literature data. The obtained effective electrical conductivity was compared to Bruggeman three media mixture model: physiological solution, bone marrow and bone matrix. Results: The values for physiological solution plus bone marrow and bone matrix that captured better the bone volume fraction in the two media Finite Element model were: σps+bm = 298.4 mS/m and σb = 21.0 mS/m, respectively. Additionally, relative good results were obtained by a three media Bruggeman mixture model with σbm= 103 mS/m, σb= 21.0 mS/m, and σps= 1200 mS/m. Simple linear relationships between the proportions of constituents depending on bone volume fraction were tested. Degree of anisotropy and fractal dimension do not show detectable changes in effective conductivity. Conclusions: These results provided some useful findings for simulation purposes: first, a higher value of electrical conductivity of bone marrow has to be used in order to obtain similar values to those experimental published data. Second, anisotropy is not detectable by conductivity measurements for small trabecular samples (cube 5 mm). Finally, the simulations presented here showed a relatively good fitting of the mixture Bruggeman model which potentially would allow both, accounting for the free water content and re-scaling the model for whole bone electrical simulations.

Regular inspections during construction work verify that the work completed is consistent with the plans and specifications and ensure that it is within the planned time and budget. This requires frequent physical site observations to independently measure and verify the completion percentage of the construction progress performed over periods of time. The current computer vision-based (CV) techniques for the measurement of as-built elements, predominantly use 3D laser scanning or 3D Photogrammetry modelling to determine the geometrical properties of as-built elements on construction sites. Both techniques require data acquisition from several positions and angles to generate sufficient information about the element’s coordinates making the deployment of these techniques on dynamic construction project sites a challenging task. In this paper, we propose a pipeline for automating the measurement of as-built components using artificial intelligence (AI) and computer vision (CV) techniques. The pipeline requires a single image obtained with a stereo-camera system to measure the size of selected objects or as-built components. We demonstrate our approach by measuring the size of concrete walls and columns. The novelty of this work is attributed to the fully automated CV-based method for measuring any given element using a single image only. The proposed solution is suitable for use in measuring the sizes of as-built components of built assets. It has the potential to be further developed and integrated with BIM models for use on construction projects for progress monitoring.

To solve two key problems in the identification of people who are infected with COVID-19: the first problem is that the identification accuracy is not high enough. The second problem is that present identification method such as nucleic acid testing is expensive in many countries. Methods: So, I decided to design a fast identification method for COVID-19 patients which is based on deep learning. After the model (CoughNet) learns more than 6,000 cough spectrograms of both COVID-19 patients and normal people, the accuracy rate of identification of COVID-19 patients and normal people is higher than 99% in the test set. Structure: This paper is mainly divided into three parts: the first part introduces the main background and research status of the research; The second part introduces the research methods; The third part introduces the specific process of the experiment.

Susceptible, infective, recovered, and hospitalized/isolated individuals are placed on the cells of a nxn square lattice, where each cell is occupied by a single individual or is vacant. At discrete time units (typically one day each) all susceptibles and infectives execute a random movement and when a coincidence of the two types occurs the susceptible is converted to infective status according to some probability. Infectives are labelled by the number of days since originally infected. At each time increment the age label of the infectives is increased by one unit. When the label reaches a number like 15 or 20 days the susceptibles recover with some probability or become isolated/hospitalized. Upon reaching some age the latter types either recover or die. Probabilities for the movements and conversions from one status to another are implemented by random numbergeneration. Simulations were carried out to investigate the effect of several probability and age parameters, the size of population (proportional to nxn) and density (related to fraction of occupied cells), and the size of the movements. Mid-term gradual conversion of susceptibles to isolated was explored as intervention policy.

The growth of urban population, combined with an increase of extreme events due to climate changes call for a better understanding and representation of urban floods. Rainfall and infiltration are two important factors that affect the watershed response to a given precipitation event. In this paper, we evaluate the influence of the representation of infiltration and spatially variable rainfall on the computer simulation of the floods that affected the city of Hull, UK in June 2007. This work compares a uniform rainfall with one generated using Kriging with External Drift and a constant infiltration equal to the soil hydraulic conductivity with a neglected infiltration. The results of the four simulations are then compared with the flood extents observed by public authorities. It results that the computer model is able the reproduce the general dynamic of the flood and identify the main inundated areas. We found that neglecting the infiltration induce a better representation of this flood event. Furthermore, the use of radar rainfall results in an accuracy similar to the one obtained with a constant rainfall. This study indicates that when the spatial resolution of the rainfall data is low compared to the catchment size and the precipitation distribution is uniform, the spatial variability of the rainfall might not add significant information.

The past decade has witnessed enormous progress, which has seen the noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs) turn from the so called dark matter RNA to critical functional molecules, influencing most physiological processes in development and disease contexts. Many ncRNAs interact with each other and are part of networks that influence the cell transcriptome and proteome and consequently the outcome of biological processes. The regulatory circuits controlled by ncRNAs have become increasingly more relevant in cancer. Further understanding of these complex network interactions and how ncRNAs are regulated, is paving the way for the identification of better therapeutic strategies in cancer.

The extensive use of carrier-aided smoothing code (CSC) filter has led to reduce the noise level of raw code measurements in GNSS positioning and navigation applications. However, the existing CSC technique is sensitive to the changes of the integer ambiguity and then the smoothing proce-dure needs to be restarted in the presence of cycle-slips. As the Doppler shift is instantaneous ob-servation and immune to cycle-slips, Doppler-aided smoothing code (DSC) algorithm would be more promising in challenged environment. Based on the Hatch-filter, an optimal DSC approach is proposed with the principle of minimum variance. Meanwhile, to inhibit the effect of integral cumulative error of Doppler, a balance factor is adopted to adjust the contributions of raw code and DSC. The noise level of code observable is not only affected by thermal noise, but also limited by systematic bias. Satellite code bias (SCB) has been identified in the raw code observable on each frequency for each BDS-2 satellite. By minimizing the sum of absolute value of residuals, polyno-mial segment fitting algorithm as a function of elevation-angles is applied to establish the SCB cor-rection model based on epoch-differenced Multipath (MP) deviations. Finally, numerical experi-ments demonstrate the validity and efficiency of the refined DSC filter with SCB corrections on each available frequency for BDS-2 un-GEO satellites.

In the digital age, social media platforms have become a significant source of both information and misinformation, presenting challenges and opportunities for threat intelligence. Natural Language Processing (NLP) has emerged as a powerful tool for extracting actionable insights from the vast amounts of unstructured text generated on these platforms. This paper explores the application of NLP techniques to enhance social media threat intelligence, focusing on methodologies for detecting and analyzing threats such as disinformation, cyberbullying, and extremist content. We examine various NLP approaches, including sentiment analysis, topic modeling, and entity recognition, and their effectiveness in identifying and mitigating potential risks. The paper also addresses the challenges associated with processing social media data, such as dealing with slang, context, and multilingual content. By leveraging NLP, organizations can improve their ability to monitor and respond to emerging threats in real-time, ultimately enhancing their overall security posture. The findings suggest that while NLP offers significant benefits, it must be complemented by human expertise and ethical considerations to ensure accurate and responsible threat assessment.

The integration of the Internet of Things (IoT) and Distributed Computer Systems (DCS) is transforming business models across industries. IoT devices enable real-time monitoring of equipment and processes, reducing downtime and enhancing efficiency. In the case, manufacturing companies use IoT sensors to monitor machinery, predict failures, and schedule maintenance. Also, automation via IoT, reduces manual intervention, resulting in boosted productivity in smart factories and automated supply chains. IoT devices generate thus vast amounts of data, which businesses analyze to gain insights into customer behavior, operational inefficiencies, and market trends. In turn, distributed computer systems process this data, providing actionable insights and enabling advanced analytics and machine learning for future trend predictions. While, IoT facilitates personalized products and services by collecting data on customer preferences and usage patterns, enhancing satisfaction and loyalty, IoT devices support new customer interactions, like wearable health devices, and enable subscription-based and pay-per-use models in transportation and utilities. Conversely, real-time monitoring enhances security, as distributed systems quickly respond to threats, ensuring operational safety. It also aids regulatory compliance by providing accurate operational data. In this way, this study, through a Bibliometric Literature Review (LRSB) of 91 screened pieces of literature, aims at ascertaining to what extent the aforementioned capacities enhance business models. The study concludes that those systems leverage businesses, promoting competitive edge, continuous innovation, and adaptability to market dynamics. A review of 91 academic documents from the Scopus database highlights these impacts.

This article explores the efficiency of various clustering methods for image segmentation under different luminosity conditions. Image segmentation plays a crucial role in computer vision appli-cations, and clustering algorithms are commonly used for this purpose. The search for an adaptive clustering mechanism aims to ensure maximum symmetry of real objects with objects/segments in their digital representations. However, clustering methods performance can fluctuate with varying lighting conditions during image capture. Therefore, we assess the performance of several clustering algorithms — including k-means, K-Medoids, fuzzy c-means, Possibilistic C-Means, Gus-tafson-Kessel, Entropy-based Fuzzy, Riddler-Calvard, Kohonen Self-Organizing Maps, and Meanshift — across images captured under different illumination conditions. Additionally, we develop an adaptive image segmentation system utilizing empirical data. Conducted experiments highlight varied performance among clustering methods under different luminosity conditions. This research enhance better understanding of luminosity's impact on image segmentation and aiding in method selection for diverse lighting scenarios.

We introduce a novel microscopic image dataset augmented with segmentation and detection labels specifically designed for microplastic analysis in sewage environments. Recognizing the increasing concern over microplastics — particles of synthetic polymers smaller than 5mm — and their detrimental effects on marine ecosystems and human health, our research focuses on enhancing detection and analytical methodologies through advanced computer vision and deep learning techniques. The dataset comprises high-resolution microscopic images of microplastics collected from sewage, meticulously labeled for both segmentation and detection tasks, aiming to facilitate accurate and efficient identification and quantification of microplastic pollution. In addition to dataset development, we present example deep learning models optimized for segmentation and detection of microplastics within complex sewage samples. The models demonstrate significant potential in automating the analysis of microplastic contamination, offering a scalable solution to environmental monitoring challenges. Furthermore, we ensure the accessibility and reproducibility of our research by making the dataset and model codes publicly available, accompanied by detailed documentation on GitHub and LabelBox. Knowledge is not merely the characteristic of certain pieces of information being deemed true, believed and justifiable, but rather a process. The sentences that reaches the status of knowledge forms a universe that provides an interpretation of the reality one aims to describe. Language exchanges information through communication and the justification, if concludes successfully with respect to a sentence, it elevates the information to the status of knowledge. We provide a model where we define the fundamental elements of communication and grammar. As a result, knowledge must be \open\ (everyone must be able to acquire it), \free\ (everyone must be able to justifiy) and \tidy\ (everyone must be able to retrace the justification process in all its parts recursively). Ultimately, the development of knowledge processing, referred to as \emph{knowmatic}, represents the evolution of the information technologies (\it).

Skin cancer is a global health concern with increasing prevalence, necessitating effective early detection and classification systems. Transfer learning has emerged as a powerful tool in this domain, enhancing diagnostic accuracy. Attention mechanisms, which selectively focus on pertinent image features, play a pivotal role in transfer learning. While previous studies have highlighted their effectiveness, their applicability across different models and datasets remains understudied. This empirical study explores the impact of various attention mechanisms on the performance of transfer learning models for skin cancer detection and classification. Using five transfer learning models (DenseNet121, InceptionV3, MobileNet, VGG16, and Xception) and six attention mechanisms (Channel Attention, Global Context Attention, Guided Attention, Nonlocal Attention, Positional Attention, and Spatial Attention), we conducted 105 experiments across three datasets. Traditional metrics (accuracy, precision, recall, and f1-score) were employed for empirical validation. The results reveal a nuanced relationship between attention mechanisms, transfer learning models, and datasets. Overall, attention mechanisms exhibit the potential to enhance skin cancer classification. Spatial and channel attention mechanisms consistently outperform others, offering simplicity and effectiveness. Model-specific selection of attention mechanisms is crucial, with a trade-off between model complexity and performance evident. This study provides insights into developing efficient skin cancer classification models utilizing attention mechanisms.

Image analysis is widely applied in plant science for phenotyping and monitoring botanic and agricultural species. Although a lot of software is available, tools integrating image analysis and statistical assessment of seedling growth in large groups of plants are limited or absent, and do not cover the needs of the researchers. In this study, we developed Morley, a free, open-source graphical user interface written in Python. Morley automates the following workflow: (1) group-wise analysis of a few thousand seedlings from multiple images; (2) recognition of seeds, shoots and roots in seedling images; (3) calculation of shoot and root lengths and surface areas, (4) evaluation of statistically significant differences between plant groups, (5) calculation of germination rates, (6) visualization and interpretation. Morley is designed for laboratory studies of biotic effects on seedling growth, when molecular mechanisms underlying morphometric changes are analyzed. Performance was tested using cultivars of T. aestivum, P. sativum on seedlings of up to 1 week old. Accuracy of the measured morphometric parameters was comparable with the ones obtained using ImageJ and manual measurements. Dose-dependent laboratory tests for germination affected by new bioactive compounds and fertilizers, assuming extraction of seedlings from a substrate and/or dissection are among the suggested applications.

Existing methods for 3D human pose estimation mainly divide the task into two stages. The first stage identifies the 2D coordinates of the human joints in the input image, namely the 2D human joint coordinates. The second stage uses the results from the first stage as input to recover the depth information of human joints from the 2D human joint coordinates to achieve 3D human pose estimation. However, the recognition accuracy of the two-stage method relies heavily on the results of the first stage and includes too many redundant processing steps, which reduces the inference efficiency of the network. To address these issues, we propose the EDD, a fully End-to-end 3D human pose estimation method based on transformer architecture with Dual Decoders. By learning multiple human poses, the model can directly infer all 3D human poses in the image using a pose decoder, and then further optimize the recognition result using a joint decoder based on the kinematic relations between joints. With the attention mechanism, this method can adaptively focus on the most relevant features to the target joint, effectively overcoming the feature misalignment problem in the human pose estimation task and greatly improving the model performance. Any complex post-processing step, such as non-maximum suppression, is eliminated, further improving the efficiency of the model. The results show that the method achieves an accuracy of 87.4% on the MuPoTS-3D dataset, significantly improving the accuracy of end-to-end 3D human pose estimation methods.

Existing one-shot neural architecture search (NAS) methods have to conduct a search over a giant super-net, which leads to the huge computational cost. To reduce such cost, in this paper, we propose a method, called FTSO, to divide the whole architecture search into two sub-steps. Specifically, in the first step, we only search for the topology, and in the second step, we search for the operators. FTSO not only reduces NAS’s search time from days to 0.68 seconds, but also significantly improves the found architecture's accuracy. Our extensive experiments on ImageNet show that within 18 seconds, FTSO can achieve a 76.4% testing accuracy, 1.5% higher than the SOTA, PC-DARTS. In addition, FTSO can reach a 97.77% testing accuracy, 0.27% higher than the SOTA, with nearly 100% (99.8%) search time saved, when searching on CIFAR10.

The increasing use of deep learning techniques to manipulate images and videos, commonly referred to as "deepfakes," is making more and more challenging to differentiate between real and fake content. While various deepfake detection systems have been developed, they often struggle to detect deepfakes in real-world situations. In particular, these methods are often unable to effectively distinguish images or videos when these are modified using novel techniques which have not been used in the training set. In this study, we carry out an analysis of different deep learning architectures in an attempt to understand which is more capable of better generalizing the concept of deepfake. According to our results, it appears that Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) seem to be more capable of storing specific anomalies and thus excel in cases of datasets with a limited number of elements and manipulation methodologies. The Vision Transformer, conversely, is more effective when trained with more varied datasets, achieving more outstanding generalization capabilities than the other methods analysed. Finally, the Swin Transformer appears to be a good alternative for using an attention-based method in a more limited data regime. All the analyzed architectures seem to have a different way to look at deepfakes but since in a real-world environment, the generalization capability is essential, based on the carried out experiments the Vision Transformer seems to provide superior performances.

This study presents review of 7580 papers in 13 academic journals, published from January 2015 to January 2020. After a detailed analysis of all papers, 46 papers were further selected showing research on a student population aged between 6 and 15 years old. In order for the paper to be included in the research, the condition was that the paper deals with teaching at least one of the following content areas: programming languages, game design, computer thinking (CT), algorithmic thinking and robotics programming. This study shows the representation of the listed content area in reviewed papers for the specified time period as well as a detailed analysis of the selected papers. Available data about study, participants and education level, country (first author), learning domain, teaching tools, research questions, hypothesis, pre/post-test results, interviews, control groups, course duration, research design, previous experience, project or grant and re-search purpose in detected papers were analysed. In addition, impact of studying some of the listed content areas on student learning performance, motivation, attitude and perception were investigated.

Nowadays, emerging technologies have changed the places of work through computers and ICT tools, which have revolutionized teaching and learning environments in different ways. In spite of the fact that computers as ICT tools have become part and progressively instrument for teachers and instructors used in teaching and learning, but most educators can't incorporate them into their teaching and learning process, which results in students being ill-equipped or lacking some necessary skills in the world of work, which leads to low performance and poor handling of tools whose lead to low production. To tackle this issue, it is essential to develop the technical and vocational education and training (TVET) system by determining the quality of technical and vocational education (TVE) teachers. In this paper, the literature concerning the competence required by TVET teachers towards computer-related instructional tech-nology for classroom teaching and learning was examined through the technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) model. Sixty (60) questionnaires were ad-ministered to TVE teachers within six technical colleges of education in north-eastern Nigeria. The data was quantitatively analyzed using traditional linear models, namely multilinear regression (MLR) and artificial intelligence (AI) models, namely artificial neural networks (ANN) and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference systems (ANFIS), which were developed using MATLAB 9.3 (R2019a), while the classical linear MLR model was developed using SPSS software. The results from our classical study indicated that TVE teachers are competent in computer and some instructional technology usage and show a high correlation between competence and teaching experience and a lower correlation between competence and gender. The goodness of fit shows a good fit of the model. Future studies should examine the application of other linear and non-linear AI techniques.

The number of AI applications in education is growing every day. One recent AI application in the educational sector is Chatbot technology, which is used to support teaching and administrative tasks. This document presents the design and implementation of a Chatbot called Tashi-Bot that helps applicants and university students to obtain information from an educational institution about certain academic and administrative processes. Among these are processes related to well-being, tuition, costs, admission, and other services. In order to design the Chatbot, an analysis of the state of the art, methodologies, and suitable tools was carried out, and a survey was conducted to discover the needs of users and their preferences in the use of a Chatbot for this specific purpose. Tashi-Bot was implemented on the SnatchBot platform and later deployed on a Telegram channel. In its evaluation, a final survey was carried out to check on the satisfaction of the users. The results suggest that Tashi-Bot could help applicants and university students to find information on academic and administrative processes with great certainty and without the need for human interaction. Background: Tele-rehabilitation has grown significantly in the past years, especially in 2020 when it has been a crucial tool for supporting patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. Within the context of tele-rehabilitation, serious games have a significant role. However, realizing software for serious games capable of responding to the variety of user needs is resource demanding. Methods: we present Proteo, a modular framework for developing serious games from scratch, but with the ability of providing a high-level interface for game customization by therapists and researchers. We also present two serious game implementation examples with analysis of end user’s and therapists/researchers’ satisfaction. Results: by involving a group of 11 specialized therapists and 9 end users we analyzed the Proteo user’s satisfaction. We found that therapists and end users scored high level of involvement, and the therapists scored also high level of suitability. More in depth, both groups showed significant differences between positive and negative feeling, with positive feeling scoring higher than negative ones. Finally, concerning Users’ level of suitability the condition of successfulness of the system, ability to control, clarity and helpfulness were reported as high while the difficulty of the system and the difficulty of the task were reported as low. Conclusions: the proposed framework is a step forward in providing a comprehensive open-source, modular framework, to develop serious games for tele-rehabilitation. Proteo is distributed with a MIT license and available to researchers on GitHub and has been well accepted by the users we involved in the evaluation tests.

In recent years, a range of problems under the broad umbrella of computer vision based analysis of ancient coins have been attracting an increasing amount of attention. Notwithstanding this research effort, the results achieved by the state of the art in published literature remain poor and far from sufficiently well performing for any practical purpose. In the present paper we present a series of contributions which we believe will benefit the interested community. We explain that the approach of visual matching of coins, universally adopted in existing published papers on the topic, is not of practical interest because the number of ancient coin types exceeds by far the number of those types which have been imaged, be it in digital form (e.g., online) or otherwise (traditional film, in print, etc.). Rather, we argue that the focus should be on understanding the semantic content of coins. Hence, we describe a novel approach—to first extract semantic concepts from real-world multimodal input and associate them with their corresponding coin images, and then to train a convolutional neural network to learn the appearance of these concepts. On a real-world data set, we demonstrate highly promising results, correctly identifying a range of visual elements on unseen coins with up to 84% accuracy.

Spike shape and morphometric characteristics are among the key characteristics of cultivated cereals associated with their productivity. Identification of the genes controlling these traits requires morphometric data at harvesting and analysis of numerous plants, which could be automatically done using technologies of digital image analysis. A method for wheat spike morphometry utilizing 2D image analysis is proposed. Digital images are acquired in two variants: a spike on a table (one projection) or fixed with a clip (four projections). The method identifies spike and awns in the image and estimates their quantitative characteristics (area in image, length, width, circularity, etc.). Section model, quadrilaterals, and radial model are proposed for describing spike shape. Parameters of these models are used to predict spike shape type (spelt, normal, or compact) by machine learning. The mean error in spike density prediction for the images in one projection is 4.61 (~18%) versus 3.33 (~13%) for the parameters obtained using four projections.

Relationships among near set theory, shape maps and recent accounts of the Quantum Hall effect pave the way to quantum computations performed in higher dimensions. We illustrate the operational procedure to build a quantum computer able to detect, assess and quantify a fourth spatial dimension. We show how, starting from two-dimensional shapes embedded in a 2D topological charge pump, it is feasible to achieve the corresponding four-dimensional shapes, which encompass a larger amount of information. This novel, relatively straightforward architecture not only permits to increase the amount of available qbits in a fixed volume, but also converges towards a solution to the problem of optical computers, that are not allowed to tackle quantum entanglement through their canonical superposition of electromagnetic waves.

In this paper, we leverage state of the art models on Imagenet data-sets. We use the pre-trained model and learned weighs to extract the feature from the Dog breeds identification data-set. Afterwards, we applied fine-tuning and dataaugmentation to increase the performance of our test accuracy in classification of dog breeds datasets. The performance of the proposed approaches are compared with the state of the art models of Image-Net datasets such as ResNet-50, DenseNet-121, DenseNet-169 and GoogleNet. we achieved 89.66% , 85.37% 84.01% and 82.08% test accuracy respectively which shows the superior performance of proposed method to the previous works on Stanford dog breeds datasets.

This paper presents a system that merges computer vision and surface electromyography techniques to carry out grasping tasks. To perform this, the vision-driven system is used to compute pre-grasping poses of the robotic system based on the analysis of tridimensional object features. Then, the human operator can correct the pre-grasping pose of the robot using surface electromyographic signals from the forearm during wrist flexion and extension. Weak wrist flexions and extensions allow a fine adjustment of the robotic system to grasp the object and finally, when the operator considers that the grasping position is optimal, a strong flexion is performed to initiate the grasping of the object. The system has been tested with several subjects to check its performance showing a grasping accuracy of around 95% of the attempted grasps which increases by around a 9% the grasping accuracy of previous experiments in which electromyographic control was not implemented.

Drivable area (DA) detection is crucial for autonomous driving. Camera-based methods heavily rely on lighting conditions and often fail to capture accurate 3D information, while LiDAR-based methods offer accurate 3D data and are less susceptible to lighting conditions. However, existing LiDAR-based methods focus on point-wise detection, prone to occlusion and limited by point cloud sparsity, leading to decreased performance in motion planning and localization. We propose Argoverse-grid, a grid-wise DA detection dataset derived from Argoverse 1, comprising over 13K frames with fine-grained BEV DA labels across various scenarios. We also introduce Grid-DATrNet, a first grid-wise DA detection model utilizing global attention through transformers. Our experiments demonstrate the superiority of Grid-DATrNet over various methods, including both LiDAR and camera-based approaches, in detecting grid-wise DA in the proposed Argoverse-grid dataset. We show that Grid-DATrNet can detect grids even in occluded and unmeasured areas by leveraging contextual and semantic information through global attention, unlike CNN-based DA detection methods. There is a bifurcation in the academic voice regarding the adoption or rejection of generative AI in the classroom. This division in pedagogy remains ever present as educators struggle to catch up with advancing AI technology and its staunch integration into student’s everyday lives. A resounding concern from educators is for the authenticity of student work and the building of critical thinking skills, both of which become threatened by generative AI tools used without proper guidelines. Educators have a right to these concerns, as studies continue to show how generative AI tools successfully pass assessments and how the AI-coauthored work is challenging to detect or differentiate from student-authored work. In the field of Computer Science, the challenges compound as generative AI technology integrates seamlessly into already approved code-generation tools and development environments. Therefore, an informed and thoughtful decision must be made so that student learning can continue to flourish and evolve in a safe and inclusive setting. This research attempts to go beyond introductory course assessments, where a gap in research currently hangs. As curriculum becomes more challenging and abstract, can generative AI continue to pass assessments and be useful educational assistants? Or will these tools create more confusion for students as prompts become more advanced and prove difficult to interpret? During this empirical study, GitHub Copilot is assessed against the assessments of an advanced CS programming course. The findings present a resounding optimism for generative AI tools, with all assessments passed successfully. The study concludes with recommending an integrated approach of introducing and encouraging the use of generative AI. Collaboration with a partnership mindset will produce the best results.

This study investigates the possibility of using machine learning models created in DeepLabCut and Create ML to automate aspects of behavioral coding and aid in behavioral analysis. Two models with different capabilities and complexities were constructed and compared to a manually observed control period. The accuracy of the models was assessed before being applied to 7 nights of footage of the nocturnal behavior of two African elephants (Loxodonta africana). The resulting data was used to draw conclusions regarding behavioral differences between the two elephants and between individually observed nights, thus proving that such models can aid researchers in be-havioral analysis. The models were capable of tracking simple behaviors with high accuracy, but had certain limitations regarding detection of complex behaviors, such as the stereotyped behavior sway, and displayed confusion when deciding between visually similar behaviors. Further expansion of such models may be desired to create a more capable aid with the possibility of automating behavioral coding.

Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) present drawbacks for modeling geometric transformations, such as scaling and rotation, caused by the convolution operation’s locality. Deformable convolution (DCON), a mechanism that substitutes standard convolution, increasing the receptive field to capture relevant features, is a promising approach to solve this drawback and improve the robustness of CNNs. However, the optimal way to replace the standard convolution with its deformable counterpart in a CNN model is unclear. In this study, we clarify this aseveration by conducting several experiments using deformable convolutions applied in the layers that conform a small four-layer CNN model. We also use deformable convolutions on the four-layers of several ResNet CNNs with depths 18, 34, 50, and 101. The models were tested in binary balanced classes with 2D data for image classification: Cats &amp; Dogs, EyesPACS, Spyders &amp; Chickens, and Shapes. After this testing, we evaluated DCON in 3D data for action recognition: UCF101 and Human2 (a dataset we compiled to control movement, clothing and background). The contribution of this research lies in a guideline to use DCON. It can be summarized as follows: if DCON is used on the first layers of the proposal of model (with simple features), the computational resources expressed as the quantity of Flops will tend to increase and produce bigger misclassification than the standard CNN. However, if the DCON is used at the end layers, the quantity of Flops used in the training and testing will decrease, and the classification accuracy will improve by up to 20% about the base model. Moreover, it gains robustness when using deformable convolutions because it can adapt to the region of interest. Also, the best kernel size of the DCON is three. It showed better results than size five. In the last case, the quantity of Flops increase quadratically, but their performance does not increase significantly. With these results, we propose a guideline to use the DCON and contribute to understanding the impact of DCON on the robustness of CNNs.

The interaction between EMFs and neural circuits is a rich and complex subject that requires a multidisciplinary approach, combining physics, biology, mathematics, and computer science. While this study provides valuable insights, further research is needed to fully understand the implications of this interaction and to realize its potential applications in medicine, neuroscience, and technology. The findings contribute to a growing body of knowledge that bridges the gap between physics and neuroscience, opening new horizons for understanding the human mind and its connection to the physical world.
