Molecular motors play a vital role in the transport of material within the cell. A family of motors of growing interest are burnt bridge ratchets (BBRs). BBRs rectify spatial fluctuations into directed motion by creating and destroying motor-substrate bonds. It has been shown that the motility of a BBR can be optimized as a function of the system parameters. However, the amount of energy input required to generate such motion and the resulting efficiency has been less well characterized. Here, using a deterministic model, we calculate the efficiency of a particular type of BBR, namely a polyvalent hub interacting with a surface of substrate. We find that there is an optimal burn rate and substrate concentration that leads to optimal efficiency. Additionally, the substrate turnover rate has important implications on motor efficiency. We also consider the effects of force-dependent unbinding on the efficiency and find that under certain conditions the motor works more efficiently when bond breaking is included. Our results provide guidance for how to optimize the efficiency of BBRs.

Wildfire is the main disturbance in forested ecosystems of southern Europe and is due to complex interactions between climate-weather, fuels and people. Warmer and drier conditions projected in this region are expected to profoundly affect wildfires, which will impact ecosystems and humans. We review the scientific literature addressing the assessment of climate change impacts on wildfires in southern Europe, with a twofold objective: (i) report the trends in wildfire danger and activity projected under warming climate in southern Europe and (ii) discuss the limitations of wildfire projections under the specific biogeographical context of southern Europe.We identified 22 projection studies that examined future wildfire danger or wildfire activity at local, regional or continental scale. Under the scenario with the highest greenhouse gas emissions, we found that projections studies estimate an increase in future fire danger and burnt areas varying, on average, from 2 to 4 % and from 15 to 25 % per decade, respectively. Fire-prone area expansion to the north and to Mediterranean mountains is a concern, while climate-induced burnt area increase might be limited by fuel availability in the most arid areas. While all studies agreed on the direction of changes, further comparisons on the magnitude of increase remained challenging because of heterogeneous methodological choices between projections studies (climate models, projection period, spatial scale and fire metrics). We then described three main sources of uncertainty that may affect the reliability of wildfire projections: climate projections, climate-fire models, and the influences of fuel load/structure and human related factors on the climate-fire relationships. We finally suggest research directions to address some of these issues for the purpose of refining fire danger and fire activity projections in southern Europe.

Fire regimes in mountain landscapes of southern Europe have been shifting from their baselines due to the accumulation of fuel fostered by long-standing rural abandonment and fire exclusion policies. Understanding the role of fire on biodiversity is paramount to implement adequate management to mitigate the impacts of altered fire regimes and land abandonment on biodiversity. Here, we explored to what extent the spatiotemporal variation in burn severity has affected bird abundance of a mountain abandoned landscape located in the Atlantic-Mediterranean transition (NW Iberia). We took advantage of: (1) satellite images of Sentinel 2 and Landsat missions to compute burn severity indicators from 2010 to 2020, and (2) standardized bird surveys carried out over 206 point-counts along the breeding season of 2021. Bird abundance models were built from burn severity metrics together with well-known fire regime attributes (% of burnt area and time since fire). Our results showed that the spatiotemporal variation of burn severity significantly correlated with the abundance of the 39% of the modeled species, supporting the role of pyro-diversity in driving bird populations in our region. The burnt area also explained abundance patterns for 28% of species. Time since fire only correlated with the abundance of 3 species. Our findings confirm the importance of incorporating burn severity indicators into the toolkit of decision makers to anticipate the response of birds to fire management.
