The use of biological methods to control plant disease is an option to reduce the pesticide residues in an environment. The objective of this research is to develop the bio-products for the elimination and/or replacement of pesticides. All the 182 strains of beneficial bacteria were screened from 20 samples of chili. The samples were divided into 8 groups. The strain SP-TU6, SP-TU7, and SP-TU3 were high efficacy inhibited mycelium growth of Colletotrichum capsici P-TU008 with 98.93, 94.62, and 95.69%, respectively as chemical control (carbendazim). The development of 3 bio-products that can promote the growth of economic crops are including Bioproduct 1 = talcum: CaCO3: CMC (9.75:1.5:1), Bioproduct 2 = corn flour: talcum: CaCO3: CMC (10:87.5:1.5:1), and Bioproduct 3 = corn flour: talcum: CaCO3: CMC (20:87.5:1.5:1). All bioproducts showed the best level of solubility in water, distribution, and sedimentation. Found that, the bioproduct 1 was suitable for survival of beneficial bacteria SP-TU3 and SP-TU6 with a population of 4.5x1012 and 3.2x1013 cfu/g respectively, and bioproduct 2 was suitable for strain SP-TU7 (2.4x1012 cfu/g) after storage for 3 months. The strain SP-TU3 in bioproduct 1 can induce seed germination and growth parameter of chili (Capsicum spp.) were 95% and 1.86, respectively, and SP-TU7 in in bioproducts 2 had the highest efficiency to induce seed germination and growth parameter of ruzi grass (Brachiaria ruziziensis) with 62% and 6.51 respectively, and strain SP-TU6 was the most effective germination and growth parameter of B. chinesis and B. oleracea with 98%, 88%, and 3.62, 88.00, respectively.

The demand for a more sustainable agriculture, coupled with the need for optimized crop productivity, has driven the use of microorganisms for the biocontrol of diseases and pests, as well as for growth promotion. The use of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and plant growth-promoting fungi (PGPF) in Brazilian production systems has become increasingly common, with the number of microbial inoculant registrations in the country growing every year. PGPR and PGPF occupy various niches in the rhizosphere, playing a crucial role in soil nutrient cycling, as well as influencing various plant physiological processes. In this review, we address the main mechanisms used by these microbial agents in growth promotion and the use of strain co-inoculation as a strategy to enhance the efficacy of these products. Subsequently, we conduct an analysis of the available inoculants in Brazil, detailing the microorganisms available for the main Brazilian crops, and the prospects of this market regarding research and development of new products for the coming years based on the current challenges faced.

Drought stress has been considered a major problem in coffee crops, and the higher occurrence of unpredictable environmental events has highlighted the vulnerability of agricultural systems. Several reports have indicated selenium (Se) as a plant biostimulant against environmental stress, including drought. The effects of Se in plants are related to the modulation of enzymatic activity, energetics and osmoprotectants plant content, and nutrient balance in plants. However, investi-gating the effective time of Se application is crucial for better understanding its effects on coffee plants, a drought-sensitive crop. This study aimed to investigate the role of Se supply in improving drought tolerance in coffee seedlings while also evaluating the best timing for Se application. Five times of Se foliar application were assessed during induced drought stress by PEG-6000 using the day of imposing stress as a default, plus two control treatments: i) with osmotic stress and without Se; ii) without osmotic stress and Se. The treatments were compared with both control treatments. Results demonstrated that the osmotic stress (OS) promoted mild stress in the coffee plants, as ex-pected. Plants under stress showed reduced GR and SOD activity compared with the non-stressed ones, and the OS induces starch degradation, which is potentialized by Se foliar supply, mainly when Se is applied before inducing the stress. The decline in the starch content might be considered a strategy to provide energy to coffee seedlings. The seedlings that received foliar Se application 8 days before the stress exhibited higher CAT, APX, and SOD than those that did not receive OS nor Se application. The results obtained in this study suggest that the previous Se foliar spray is more effective than the Se supply after OS to overcome the adverse condition. On the other hand, the post-stress application seems to impose extra stress on the plants, leading them to reduce the water potential.

In the last years, different biotechnological approaches were developed to reduce the indiscriminate use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides and enhance plant growth and health. The most attractive, safe, and environmentally mild alternatives include those based on plant beneficial microorganisms. After a long period of studies on isolation, selection, and characterisation of plant-beneficial microorganisms, the main lines of research have been oriented to optimising the fermentation processes to produce high-quality and large volumes of biomass/spores and their further formulation. However, further well-structured schemes for improvement of all main steps of the production of bio-formulates should be developed following the ideas based on “healthy soil-healthy plants-healthy humans”.

Soil contamination with toxic heavy metals, such as lead (Pb), is a critical environmental issue with adverse effects on ecosystems. Cymbopogon citratus, known as lemongrass, is a medicinal plant with phytoremediation potential for Pb-contaminated soils, besides producing essential oil (EO) and bioactive compounds. Azospirillum brasilense is a plant growth promoting bacteria, and its inoculation into the soil can benefit plants in many ways, such as increased root growth and improved nutrient absorption. This study aimed to investigate the phytochemistry of lemongrass inoculated with A. brasilense and grown in Pb-contaminated soil to assess its responses to inoculation under different Pb levels. The experimental design was completely randomized in a 2 x 5 factorial scheme: two levels of A. brasilense (absence or presence) and five Pb levels (0, 50, 100, 300, and 500 mg Pb kg–1 of soil), totaling 60 experimental plots in ten treatments with six replicates. After four months of treatment, was analyzed total and reducing sugars, total phenolic content, flavonoids, antioxidant activity, antioxidant enzymes, proline, and EO content and composition. Soil Pb levels and A. brasilense inoculation affected phytochemical in lemongrass plants. Azospirillum inoculation reduced total sugars in the roots at all soil Pb levels, while increasing Pb levels favored a rise in sugar contents. There was an increase in flavonoid content in treatments associated with Pb and inoculated with A. brasilense. Antioxidant capacity was lower at lower Pb levels, regardless of bacterial inoculation. Enzymatic response was mainly affected by Pb concentrations between 50 and 100 mg kg–1 soil. EO content was influenced by soil Pb levels, with higher EO production at 500 mg Pb kg–1 soil and without A. brasilense inoculation. Overall, lemongrass cultivation in Pb-contaminated areas can be an alternative for phytoremediation and EO production for the industry. Moreover, A. brasilense inoculation proved to be beneficial in mitigating stress caused by high Pb concentrations in contaminated soils.

Many bacteria have the ability to survive in challenging environments; however, they cannot grow on standard culture media, a phenomenon known as the Viable but Non-Culturable (VBNC) state. Bacteria commonly go into the VBNC state under nutrient-poor environments or under stressful conditions. This review explores the concept of the VBNC state, providing insights into the beneficial bacteria known to employ this strategy. The investigation covers different chemical and physical factors that can induce the latency state, cell features, and gene expression observed in cells in the VBNC state. The revision also covered the significance and applications of beneficial bacteria, methods for evaluating bacterial viability, the ability of bacteria to persist in environments associated with higher organisms, and the factors that facilitate the return to the culturable state. Knowledge about beneficial bacteria capable of entering the VBNC state remains limited, however, beneficial bacteria in this state could face adverse environmental conditions, and return to culturable state when conditions become suitable and continue to exert their beneficial effects. Likewise, this unique feature positions them as potential candidates for healthcare applications, such as the use of probiotic bacteria to enhance human health, applications in industrial microbiology for the production of prebiotics, functional foods, and in the beer and wine industry. Moreover, their use in formulations to increase crop yield and for bacterial bioremediation offers an alternative pathway to harness their beneficial attributes.

This review article explores the significance of beneficial microorganisms in crop improvement, highlighting their roles in promoting plant growth, enhancing nutrient uptake, and protecting against pathogens. The symbiotic interactions between plants and microorganisms have been extensively studied, revealing the vast potential of these beneficial partnerships in sustainable agriculture. The article discusses various types of beneficial microorganisms, including mycorrhizal fungi, rhizobia, and plant growth-promoting bacteria, elucidating their mechanisms of action and their impact on plant health and productivity. Furthermore, it examines the application of microbial inoculants and biofertilizers in crop production systems, emphasizing their potential to enhance crop yield, nutrient use efficiency, and stress tolerance. The review also explores emerging technologies, such as metagenomics and synthetic biology, in harnessing the full potential of beneficial microorganisms for crop improvement. Overall, we highlight the importance of beneficial microorganisms in sustainable agriculture and provide insights into their promising applications in crop enhancement.

Soil salinity is one of the most serious problems for achieving better crop growth and yield. The study was conducted to isolate, characterize and screen salt tolerant microbes from spinach grown in saline soils. The efficient salt tolerant microbes were characterized for beneficial traits such as nitrogen fixation, phosphate solubilization, indoleacetic acid (IAA), biofilm production, catalase and antagonistic activities, salt tolerance and optimization of bacterial fermentation. Molecular identification of potential microbes was done by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The collected soil samples were moderately to strongly saline, alkaline in nature, low in N and P while adequate in K and Ca concentration. A total of 17 salt tolerant bacteria differing in colony and cell morphology were characterized. All isolated rhizobacterial microbes had capability to biosynthesize phytohormone IAA, 14 were able to fix atmospheric N2, 11 microbes solubilized inorganic P, 10 produced biofilm and 15 were positive in catalase activity. The isolated rhizobacteria showed salt tolerance up to 10 % induced salinity, only six microbes tolerated salt concentration of 12.5% however, none of any rhizobacteria remained viable at 15% NaCl amended media plates. The two potential salt tolerant microbes (NIA SP-6 & NIA SP-11) were screened and found for optimum growth curve and fermentation at pH 7.0 after 48 hrs of incubation period. Both potential microbes were identified as Enterobacter cloacae (NIA SP-06) and Bacillus safensis (NIA SP-11). Hence, it can be concluded that isolated salt tolerant rhizobacterial microbes have potential for beneficial traits and have ability for salt tolerance under saline conditions.

Alcohol abuse can result in detrimental multisystem effects. Chronic alcohol abuse is known to be associated with pathophysiological changes in multiple organs often resulting in life threatening clinical outcomes e.g. breast and colon cancer, pancreatic disease, cirrhosis of the liver, diabetes, osteoporosis, arthritis, kidney disease, immune system dysfunction, hypertension, coronary artery disease, alcohol-induced cardiomyopathy and heart failure as well as central nervous system disorders. In this review article, we will discuss the multisystemic effects of alcohol abuse and explore in greater detail alcohol’s impact on two main systems that result in pathophysiological changes i.e. the cardiovascular and central nervous systems.

The cyclamen mite, Phytonemus pallidus, is one of the important pests in strawberry cultivation in Canada. This insect pest hides on young strawberry leaves that have not yet opened, which limits their control. In addition, the fight against the latter involves the use of synthetic chemicals that are not without effect on the environment, human health and beneficial organisms. We hypothesized that vectorization by bees could reduce the number of applications, product runoff and provide targeted control of these pathogens. To do this, field trials were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of bumblebees Bombus terrestris in propagating Beauveria bassiana to control this pest. Our results showed that bumblebees were able to disseminate the inoculum on strawberry plants. Also, all the products used (B. bassiana and neem oil) were effective on P. pallidus. It should be noted that high mortality has been noted on this pest thanks to the application of this entomopathogen by spraying. In addition, neither of the two products tested had a significant effect on lady beetles C. septempunctata. These results therefore suggest the use of bee vectoring and neem essential oils in the sustainable management of strawberry mites.

A total of thirty-two aerobic spore former strains were isolated from intestinal samples of healthy children and analyzed for their hemolytic and antibiotic-resistance activities. Four strains selected as non-hemolytic and sensitive to all antibiotics recommended as relevant by regulatory agencies were short-listed and evaluated for their in silico and in vitro probiotic potentials. The four selected strains were assigned to the Bacillus velenzensis (MV4 and MV11), B. subtilis (MV24) and Priestia megaterium (formerly Bacillus megaterium) (MV30) species. A genomic analysis indicated that MV4, MV11 and MV24 contained a homolog of the gene coding for the fibrinolytic enzyme nattokinase while only MV30 encoded for a glutamic acid decarboxylase essential to synthesize the neurotransmitter GABA. All four strains showed a strong antioxidant activity, formed biofilm and produced/secreted quorum sensing peptides able to induce a cytoprotective stress response in a model of human intestinal (HT29) cells. Altogether, genomic and physiological data indicate that the analyzed strains do not pose safety concerns and have in vitro probiotic potentials.

Beneficial microbes are crucial for improving crop adaptation and growth under vari-ous stresses. They enhance nutrient uptake, improve plant immune responses, and help plants tolerate stresses like drought, salinity, and heat. The yield potential of any crop is significantly influenced by its associated microbiomes and their potential to im-prove growth under different stressful environments. Therefore, it’s crucial and excit-ing to understand the mechanisms of plant-microbe interactions. Maize (Zea mays L.) is one of the primary staple foods worldwide, in addition to wheat and rice. Maize is also an industrial crop globally, contributing 83% of its production for use in feed, starch, and biofuel industries. Maize requires significant nitrogen fertilization to achieve opti-mal growth and yield. Maize plants are highly susceptible to heat, salinity, and drought stresses and require innovative methods to mitigate the harmful effects of environmental stresses and reduce the use of chemical fertilizers. This review summarizes our current understanding of the beneficial interactions between maize plants and specific microbes. These beneficial microbes improve plant resilience to stress and in-crease productivity. For example, they regulate electron transport, downregulate cata-ase, and upregulate antioxidants. We also review the roles of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) enhancing stress tolerance in maize. Additionally, we explore the application of these microbes in maize production and identify major knowledge gaps that need to be addressed to utilize the potential of beneficial microbes fully.

Fever remains an integral part of the acute clinical diseases management, esp. viral, for which effective therapeutics remain desired. However, the presence of often confusing fever reduction recommendations for COVID-19 in the public domain during the pandemic, as late as 28 April 2021, seems to suggest the reduction of any ‘uncomfortable’ fever ranging from 37.8 - 39oC, as opposed to WHO fever reduction guidelines (≥39oC), urgently need attention. The confusion could percolate down into different agencies who look up to these agencies for guidance in framing their own, denying the benefits of fever to populations, and effectively undo whatever successive WHO’s guidelines have achieved in the last two decades. The existence of conflicting guidelines in public domains which are open to interpretations has consequences to public health and the healthcare infrastructure, on implementation. For controlling acute infectious diseases, esp. viral, the fever remains the most important enabler. Historically, our chief obstacles to harnessing the benefits of fever in acute clinical diseases with limited therapeutics had been: a) widespread myths about ‘fevers’ arising from a general misunderstanding of basic facts; b) presence of confusing guidelines by different agencies which are open to alternate interpretation. The article attempts to briefly indicate the benefits of fever in disease resolution, dispel myths, underline vagueness in illustrative national guidelines and the need to align them with evidence-based WHO guidelines, as it has the potential to perpetuate myths/confusion in masses leading to adverse impact on disease management – more morbidity and mortality from diseases including COVID-19.

Soil-structure interaction (SSI) leads to a modification of dynamic properties of a structure, but due to the complexity on analysis, it is traditionally assumed in seismic designs that the structure is fixed-supported at the ground, which unavoidably gives potential dangers to seismic performances of the structure. This study focuses on the possibility of the detrimental effects of SSI by comparing the dynamic responses of SSI system to fixed-base structure. The SSI model consists of an oscillator, a three-dimensional foundation and a multilayered half-space. In indirect boundary element method is employed, combined with non-singular Green’s functions of distributed loads to calculate the foundation impedances for substructure method. Although the SSI mechanism dampens peak amplitude of structure response in frequency domain, case studies on four buildings to 42 earthquakes in time history show a possibility of 15%-20% that SSI amplifies the dynamic responses, depending on the frequency component of incident waves. Also, a neural network algorithm is proposed to provide a new idea of involving SSI analysis into the traditional seismic designs, to eliminate potential hazards of SSI.

Objective: To recommend how physicians can best respond to families whose hopes for a miracle via divine intervention influence their medical decisions, like, for example, making them not want to withdraw ventilatory support in cases of poor neurologic prognosis because they are still hoping for God to intervene. Methods: Auto-ethnographic analysis of chaplaincy experience in this clinical context yields a nuanced 90-second, point-of-care spiritual intervention physicians can use to address the religious aspect of families who base medical decisions on their hopes for a miracle via divine intervention. Explanation of how spiritual intervention dovetails with existing physician communication protocol for responding to families hoping for a miracle. Results: Spiritual intervention for religious aspect of miracle-hoping families is integrated into existing physician communication protocol for responding to families hoping for a miracle with recommendations for utilization of existing communication technology when necessary. Conclusion: Properly addressing the religious dimension of families hoping for a miracle may be helpful for physicians interested in decreasing their own stress levels, improving outcomes for this clinical context, and ensuring that unintentional discrimination does not perpetuate racial disparities in end-of-life care.
