This addendum contains clarifications and a sharpening of some of the results on the VIT transform framework developed in [1]. The focus is on the right-coefficient and left- coefficient forms of the transform, the extraction of a first-order term from a left polynomial fraction, and the application to linear time-varying systems.

Prosthetic attack is a problem that must be prevented in the current finger vein recognition application. To solve this problem, a finger vein living detection system was established in this article. The system first captures short-term static finger vein video by uniform near-infrared lighting, segments the veins by Gabor filters with current removing, calculates the multi-Scale spatial-Temporal maps(MSTmap) from the selected vein blocks, and trains the MSTmaps in the proposed Light-ViT network for the liveness detection. The MS maps are used to extract the coarse feature and Light-ViT is used to refine the liveness feature and predict the liveness result. Light-ViT, featuring an enhanced L-ViT backbone as its core, is constructed by interleaving multiple MN blocks and L-ViT blocks. This architecture effectively balances the learning of local image features, controls network parameter complexity, and substantially improves the accuracy of liveness detection. The accuracy of the Light-ViT network is verified to be 99.63% on the self-made living / prosthetic finger vein video dataset. This proposed system can also be directly applied to the finger vein recognition terminal after the model lightweighting.

Image classification in Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) containing various land-cover classes is essential for efficient and sustainable land-use estimation, and other tasks like object detection, localization and segmentation. Deep Learning (DL) techniques have shown a tremendous potential in the GIS domain. While Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) have dominated most of the image analysis domain, a new architecture called transformers have proved to be a unifying solution for several AI-based processing pipelines. Vision Transformers (ViT), a variant of transformers can have comparable and in some cases better accuracy than a CNN. However, they suffer from a significant drawback associated with an excessive use of training parameters. In this research we explore several modifications in the vision transformer architectures, especially MobileViT that can be optimized while boosting accuracy. To verify our proposed approach these new architectures are trained on four land-cover datasets AID, EuroSAT, UC-Merced, and WHU-RS19. Experiments reveal that combination of lightweight convolutional layers including ShuffleNet along with depthwise separable convolutions and average pooling can reduce the trainable parameters by 17.85% and yet achieve higher accuracy than the base MobileViT. It is also observed that utilizing a combination of convolution layers along with multi-headed self attention layers in MobileViT variants provide better performance in capturing local and global features unlike the standalone ViT architecture that utilizes almost 95% more parameters than the proposed MobileViT variant.

Ultrasound (US) has become a widely used imaging modality in clinical practice, characterized by its rapidly evolving technology, advantages, and unique challenges such as low imaging quality and high variability. There is a critical need to develop advanced automatic US image analysis methods to enhance diagnostic accuracy and objectivity. Vision transformer, a recent innovation in machine learning, has demonstrated significant potential in various research fields, including general image analysis and computer vision, due to its capacity to process large datasets and learn complex patterns. Its suitability for automatic US image analysis tasks, such as classification, detection, and segmentation, has been recognized. This review provides an introduction to vision transformer and discusses its applications in specific US image analysis tasks, while also addressing the open challenges and potential future trends in its application in medical US image analysis. Vision transformer has shown promise in enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of ultrasound image analysis and is expected to play an increasingly important role in the diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions using ultrasound imaging as technology progresses.

Amidst the burgeoning global concerns surrounding skin cancer, the quest for precise and efficient diagnostic methodologies has intensified. Conventional diagnostic approaches relying on subjective visual inspection by dermatologists often grapple with subjectivity and resource constraints. This predicament underscores the critical role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in revolutionizing diagnostic paradigms by significantly enhancing accuracy and accessibility. This study embarks on an extensive exploration of skin cancer classification, specifically targeting the intricate task of 8-class skin cancer classification. Employing cutting-edge deep learning models on the ISIC2019 dataset, a comprehensive analysis was conducted utilizing a diverse array of pre-trained ImageNet architectures and Vision Transformer models. To counteract the inherent class imbalance in skin cancer datasets, a pioneering "Naturalize" augmentation technique was introduced, leading to the creation of indispensable tools—the Naturalized 2.4K ISIC2019 and groundbreaking Naturalized 7.2K ISIC2019 datasets—catalyzing advancements in classification accuracy. The pivotal role of AI in mitigating the risks of misdiagnosis and under-diagnosis in skin cancer becomes evident through this research. AI’s proficiency in analyzing vast datasets and discerning subtle patterns augments the diagnostic prowess of dermatologists significantly. Integration of AI-powered systems in skin cancer diagnosis holds immense promise in facilitating early detection and substantially improving patient outcomes. The meticulous evaluation employed quantitative measures such as confusion matrices, classification reports, and visual analyses using Score-CAM across diverse dataset variations. Astonishingly, the culmination of these endeavors culminated in an unprecedented achievement—100% average accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-Score—within the groundbreaking Naturalized 7.2K ISIC2019 dataset. This remarkable feat underscores the transformative potential of AI-driven methodologies, exemplifying their prowess in redefining the landscape of skin cancer diagnosis and management. In summary, this research represents a pivotal stride towards redefining dermatological diagnosis, showcasing the remarkable impact of AI-powered solutions in surmounting the challenges inherent in skin cancer diagnosis. The attainment of 100% across crucial metrics within the Naturalized 7.2K ISIC2019 dataset serves as a testament to the transformative capabilities of AI-driven approaches in reshaping the trajectory of skin cancer diagnosis and patient care.

Vit-106 is a promising zirconium-based alloy with high glass-forming ability and belongs to the so-called bulk metallic glasses (BMG). Workpieces with a size of around one centimeter in all three dimensions can be obtained from a BMG alloy by casting. However, further increasing the cast size decreases the cooling rate and thus induces crystallization. Selective laser melting (SLM) is a well-known technique to overcome the size limitations for BMGs because a workpiece is built by the addition of multiple melt portions where the cooling rate is kept above the critical one. Currently, BMG parts obtained by SLM suffer from partial crystallization. The present work studies the influence of SLM process parameters on partial crystallization of Vit-106 by metallography and the influence of the microstructure on mechanical properties by microhardness and wear resistance testing. Submicron crystalline inclusions are observed in an amorphous matrix of Vit-106 alloy obtained by SLM. The size and the concentration of the inclusions can be controlled by varying the laser scanning speed. It is shown that submicron crystalline inclusions formed in the amorphous matrix during SLM can favorably affect microhardness and wear resistance.

In this paper, we redefine the boundaries of blood cell classification, expanding from 5 to 11 distinct blood cell types using the challenging 11-class PBC dataset. This shift enables a deeper understanding of blood cell diversity, overcoming previous limitations in medical image analysis. Our approach combines state-of-the-art deep learning techniques, including pre-trained ConvNets, ViTb16 models, and custom CNN architectures. We employ transfer learning, fine-tuning, and ensemble strategies, such as CBAM and Averaging ensembles, to achieve unprecedented accuracy and interpretability. Our fully fine-tuned EfficientNetV2 B0 model sets a new standard, with a macro-average precision, recall, and F1-score of 91%, 90%, and 90%, respectively, and an average accuracy of 93%. This breakthrough underscores the transformative potential of 11-class blood cell classification for more precise medical diagnoses. Moreover, our groundbreaking "Naturalize" augmentation technique produces remarkable results. The 2K-PBC dataset generated with "Naturalize" boasts a macro-average precision, recall, and F1-score of 97%, along with an average accuracy of 96% when leveraging the fully fine-tuned EfficientNetV2 B0 model. This innovation not only elevates classification performance but also addresses data scarcity and bias in medical deep learning. Our research marks a paradigm shift in blood cell classification, enabling more nuanced and insightful medical analyses. The "Naturalize" technique’s impact extends beyond blood cell classification, emphasizing the vital role of diverse and comprehensive datasets in advancing healthcare applications through deep learning.

Deep Learning (DL) has made significant advances in computer vision with the advent of Vision Transformers (ViT). Unlike Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), ViTs use self-attention to extract both local and global features from image data, and then use residual connections to feed these features directly into a fully networked multilayer perceptron head. In hospitals, hematologists prepare peripheral blood smears (PBSs) and read them under a medical microscope to detect abnormalities in blood counts such as leukemia. However, this task is time-consuming and prone to human error. This study investigates the transfer learning process of Google ViT and ImageNet CNNs to automate the reading of PBSs. The study used two online PBS datasets, PBC and BCCD, and transferred them into balanced datasets to investigate the influence of data amount and noise immunity on both neural networks. The PBC results show that Google ViT is an excellent DL neural solution for data scarcity. The BCCD results show that Google ViT is superior to ImageNet CNNs in dealing with unclean, noisy image data because it is able to extract both global and local features and use residual connections, despite the additional time and computational overhead.
