This study investigated the prevalence of embryonic and connective tissue elements in the filum terminale (FT) of patients with tethered cord syndrome (TCS), examining both typical and pathological histology. FT specimens from 288 patients who underwent spinal cord detethering from 2013-2021 were analyzed. Histopathological examination involved routine hematoxylin and eosin staining and specific immunohistochemistry when needed. Patient details were extracted from electronic medical records. The study found that 97.6% of FT specimens had peripheral nerves, and 70.8% had regular ependymal cell linings. Other findings included ependymal cysts and canals, ganglion cells, neuropil, and prominent vascular features. Notably, 41% showed fatty infiltration, and 7.6% had dystrophic calcification. Inflammatory infiltrates, an underreported finding, were observed in 3.8% of the specimens. The research highlights peripheral nerves and ganglion cells as natural components of the FT, with ependymal cell overgrowth and other tissues potentially linked to TCS. Enlarged vessels may suggest venous congestion due to altered FT mechanics. The presence of lymphocytic infiltrations and calcifications provides new insights into structural changes and mechanical stress in the FT, contributing to our understanding of TCS pathology.

In this paper, a new relay system that uses the UAV as a relay station between the tethered UAV and ground user (TU2U2G) is proposed. The TU2U2G system replaces the base station (BS) in the cellular system with a tethered UAV (TUAV). The TUAV is a UAV that receives power over a cable from a ground control station. It has advantages of high and variable altitude up to (100m) compared to BS. In addition, it overcomes the UAV drawback of the batteries' limited capacity. After that, a 3D placement Algorithm of the UAV as a relay station in the TU2U2G system is proposed. It is presented to maximize the coverage by jointly optimizing the transmitting power and relaying distance. The TU2U2G system shows better results than the traditional cellular system in terms of optimum UAV height, maximum coverage radius, and maximum distance between BS and UAV.

Study design : Technical note. Objectives: To present a new spinal shortening technique for tethered cord syndrome. Background : Tethered cord syndrome (TCS) is a debilitating condition of progressive neurological decline. Surgical detethering for TCS is a gold standard. However, symptomatic retethering of TCS has been reported in 5%–50% of patients after initial release. To solve this problem, posterior spinal shortening osteotomy has been reported. This technique has risks of massive blood loss and neurological deterioration. The authors hereby report a new safe spinal shortening technique for tethered cord syndrome. Materials and Methods : A 31-year-old man with gait disturbance was referred to our hospital. After the delivery, he underwent surgical untethering of spinal cord in another hospital. He had hyperreflexia of Achilles tendon reflex and muscle weakness of bilateral legs (MMT 3-4). He also had urinary and bowel incontinence, and total sensory loss below L5.Anteroposterior lumbar radiogram indicates partial laminectomy of L3 and L4. Lumbar MRI showed retethering of spinal cord. Results: He underwent new spinal shortening technique for tethered cord syndrome under the guidance of O-arm navigation. First, from anterior approach disectomy from T12 to L3 was performed. Second, from posterior Ponte osteotomy was done from T12 to L3, shorten the spinal column 15 mm. The patient was successfully treated surgically. Postoperative lumbar MRI showed the tension of spinal cord was released. Manual muscle testing results and sensory function of the left leg had recovered almost fully on final follow-up at one year. Conclusions/Level of Evidence: Retethered spinal cord after initial untethering was difficult to treat. This new spinal shortening technique was effective and very safe technique to release the tension of spinal cord. Level V.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of a varying moment on the rotation angle of a large tethered satellite that is orbiting a planet. Two different types of orbits were investigated: a simple circular orbit and an elliptical orbit. Cases with zero and non-zero initial angular rotation velocity were investigated as well. This investigation will assist satellite docking missions. The large rigid tethered satellite is a futuristic concept, and this investigation is meant to assist possible docking missions to the satellite. To simplify the problem, the rotation is constrained to the orbital plane.

Various UAV applications, especially those based on reconnaissance and observation missions, often require an unlimited time of flight. This is possible only when a UAV is being continuously power supplied from the ground power source, and that is why tethered UAV systems were developed. Tethered UAV systems are based on multicopters which can hover above the landing pad, or track its position in the case it is movable. The presented research is about the development of a large C3 class hexacopter having a maximal payload of about 1 kg, and takeoff mass of 16 kg, which was tested in maritime conditions during the ferry’s cruise. The main purpose of the hexacopter is the continuous observation of the area ahead of a vessel to detect and localize obstacles in the water. During experimental tests critical phases of flight were identified, the AC-DC power supply unit as well as the power cord unwinder were tested, and the power taken by six BLDC motors was registered. The obtained results can be useful in future work on tethered UAV systems used in windy maritime conditions.

To enhance their efficiency and duration, UAVs typically employ a hybrid power system. This system integrates diverse energy sources, such as fuel cells, batteries, solar cells, and supercapacitors. The selection of an appropriate hybrid power arrangement and the implementation of an effective energy management system are crucial for the successful functioning of advanced UAVs. This article specifically concentrates on UAV platforms powered by batteries, incorporating innovative technologies like in-flight recharging via laser beams and tethering. It provides an all-encompassing and evaluative examination of the current cutting-edge power supply configurations, with the objective of identifying deficiencies, presenting perspectives, and offering recommendations for future consideration in this domain.
