Well-exposed fluvio-deltaic Surma Group successions of the northeastern Surma Basin provide a direct analogue to its equivalent subsurface successions—the main hydrocarbon reservoirs in Bangladesh. The various levels of lateral and vertical heterogeneities lead to changes in the subsurface sandbody distributions and their reservoir qualities across fields. The present study aims to identify the heterogeneities in the fluvio-deltaic Surma Group successions by detailed sedimentological analysis of the Mio-Pliocene-aged Surma Group successions. Eleven lithofacies have been identified and based on the recurring pattern of these facies within the Surma Group, five facies associations have been identified. The facies associations indicate that these deposits originated from diverse depositional settings, ranging from the prodelta to the alluvial to delta plain. As a whole, they represent a progressive shallowing upward succession with two transgressive events in the upper and lower parts of the Surma Group. Five levels of heterogeneities such as prodelta mud (HL-I), tidal heterolithic deposits (HL-II & III), interbedded mud units in delta front (HL-IV), and intercalated mud laminae, drapes (HL-V) have been identified in the fluvio-deltaic Surma Group. The study suggests that the various levels of reservoir heterogeneities are controlled by the occurrence and distribution of various facies associations.

Increasing salt intake has substantial negative impacts on health and well-being. This review article focusses on the effect of salinity intrusion (SI) on the water quality and community health of coastal Bangladesh and to find out the effectiveness of interventions for reducing the negative effects of salinity. Saline water is a noteworthy reason for hypertension or high blood pressure in the coastal areas. Health status of women especially the pregnant women are vulnerable because of drinking water sodium (DWS) prompting to pre-eclampsia, high blood pressure and hypertension as well as infant mortality. Several interventions such as rainwater harvesting and Pond sand filter (PSF) system as well as managed aquifer recharge (MAR) usage and the integration of mixed sources were reviewed on the content of drinking water sodium (DWS). Although rainwater has the positive impact of low or no sodium intake on human health, it still possesses negative impacts from not having vital minerals. Despite what might be expected, in MAR a steady increment in sodium concentration through the span of the dry season was observed. It is, subsequently, important to increase awareness about drinking water sodium (DWS) intake by providing and adopting correct technological interventions.

The COVID-19 pandemic situation, disease intensity, weak healthcare facilities, unawareness, and misinformation led people to fear and anxiety in Bangladesh. This study intended to get peoples’ perception on psychosocial, socio-economic and environmental crisis amidst the pandemi. An online questionnaire was surveyed nationwide (respondents no.1066). Datasets were analyzed through the Principal Component Analysis (PCA), hierarchical Cluster Analysis (CA), Pearson’s correlation matrix (PCM), Linear regression analysis (LRA), and psychometric characteristics were included in the Classical Test Theory (CTT) analysis. There were good associations among the psychosocial, socio-economic and environmental parameters. A significant association between fear of COVID-19 with struggling healthcare system (p<0.05) was found. Also, negative association between fragile health system and government’s ability to deal with the pandemic (p<0.05) revealing poor governance. Again, a positive association of shutdown and social distancing with fear of losing life, and due to lack of health treatment (p<0.05) reveals that shut down hampers normal activities which may lead to mental and economic stress. However, a positive association of socio-economic impact of the shutdown with poor people’s suffering, the price hike of basic need, hamper of formal education (p<0.05) may lead to severe socio-economic and health crisis. There is a possibility of climate-induced disaster during/after the pandemic, which will create severe food insecurity (p<0.01). Daily wage earners and poors will suffer most by food and nutritional deficiency, and the country may face huge economic burden. Proper risk assessment and communications is needed to alleviate fear and anxiety. Thus, financial support and mental boosting is required.
