Automated lip reading is a research problem that has developed considerably in recent years. Lip reading is evaluated both visually and audibly in some cases. The lip reading model is a field of use for detecting specific words using images from security cameras, but it is not possible to use audio-visual databases in this situation. It is not possible to obtain the sound input of the pronounced word in all cases. We collected a new Turkish dataset with only the image in this study. The new dataset is produced using Youtube videos, which is an uncontrolled environment. For this reason, images have difficult parameters in terms of environmental factors such as light, angle, color, and personal characteristics of the face. Despite the different features on the human face such as mustache, beard, and make-up, the visual speech recognition problem was developed on 10 classes including single words and two-word phrases using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) without any intervention on the data. The proposed study using only-visual data obtained a model which is automated visual speech recognition with a deep learning approach. In addition, since this study uses only-visual data, the computational cost and resource usage is less than in multi-modal studies. It is also the first known study to address the lip reading problem with a deep learning algorithm using a new dataset belonging to the Ural-Altaic languages.

Patients with excessive gingival display (EGD) are treated with lip repositioning surgeries (LRS). This study used a questionnaire to analyze and evaluate how patients who received LRS with modified and traditional techniques perceived their own oral and facial aesthetics at various timelines after their surgeries. An orofacial esthetic questionnaire (OEQ) was used in this cross-sectional study. The participants were patients who underwent LRS for treatment of their EGD were divided into control (n=100) and test (n=100) groups. For control group, LRS were performed using traditional/conventional technique and for test group, LRS were performed by modified approach. OEQ was used to record responses. The scale comprised of eight questions targeted to capture participating patient’s perceptions about their own oral and facial aesthetics at four timelines (Baseline; 1 Month; 6 Months & 1 Year). Patients responded to each question on a 10 point Likert scale (Range: 0=very dissatisfied to 10= very satisfied). Data was analyzed by independent samples T-tests, using SPSS software. 7 (3.5%) out of the total (200) patients were unable to take part in the study's OEQ. At a one-year follow-up, the mean and standard deviation for the test group's GD were 2.48+0.86mm and 3.77+1.76mm, respectively, and comparisons revealed that the test group's GD was significantly lower (p=0.000) than the control group. Results from the participant responses to OEQ using the Likert scale at the 1-year follow-up revealed significant differences between control and test groups for all questions, except Q5 (P=0.06) as shape of the teeth will not be affected by LRS. Test group patients who underwent the LRS with modified approach were having high level of satisfaction (satisfaction-score>9). Patients in control group scored their satisfaction less favorably, with certain questions (Q3) receiving scores as low as 0.31. The test group's perception of oral and facial esthetics, was significantly higher for test group at different time points. At the 1-year follow-up, the mean difference was 4.46, which was the greatest (P=0.000). The EGD improved significantly at one year with the modified lip repositioning technique. The satisfaction level of the patients with outcomes of modified lip repositioning was significantly higher as compared to conventional technique.

Background: The aim of this experimental work was to confirm the individual uniqueness of lip prints, to verify the presence of recurrent patterns according to the Suzuki and Tsuchihashi classification and to search for characteristics that can be used in establishing the sex of a subject. Methods: Lip prints were taken from a sample of 172 volunteers using liquid lipstick and transparent adhesive tape and were digitally analyzed. Results: 59 prints (35.3%) were not considered for Suzuki and Tsuchihashi classification due to quality errors and the impossibility of visualizing lip wrinkles in one or more sextants, all the digitized prints revealed themselves to be unique after having been analyzed using superimposition. Qualitatively valid prints indicated a prevalence of Type II in both male and female and the presence of sex-linked features. A major problem was that the analysis of the same print by different operators often resulted in a different attribution of a Type. Conclusions: The potential of cheiloscopy lies mainly in the matching of prints, given their uniqueness, and can be a valid tool in gender determination but the absence of a database greatly limits its use. It is necessary to establish an acquisition protocol for taking and analyzing prints that could reduce the errors committed by the operator.

The present review aims to investigate the effect of alveolar bone grafting in canine impacted unilateral cleft lip and palate patients. The goal of this review is to identify and highlight the factors that may cause maxillary canine impaction, the role of primary and secondary bone graft and dental anomalies that may affect canine impaction in patients with cleft lip and palate.

There is a considerable increase in the use of substances and medical procedures aimed at changing the esthetics of the face, particularly the appearance of the lips. Permanent fillers such as polydimethylsiloxane, also called liquid silicone, are widely used, but their application for facial esthetics is currently obsolete. However, the long-term complications remain a reality, as they can occur decades after the application. Thus, the goal of this case report was to present a complication after 16 years of treatment using liquid silicone. This case report involved a 52-year-old male with a complication of bilateral permanent filler in the upper lip performed 16 years ago, its surgical removal, and histological analysis. Histologically, it was possible to identify a chronic inflammatory, lymphoplasmacytic, and granulomatous reaction, with foreign body giant cells’ reaction, in relation to non-polarizable exogenous material due to the reaction to silicone. The most common complications are granulomas' appearance and material displacement. The case report shows these granulomas are characterized as chronic low-caliber inflammation around the silicone. They have an unknown etiology but are probably multifactorial, from continuous trauma, friction or irritation, iatrogenic factors, infection, immunological mechanisms, and genetic and molecular variations, and can be highly related to the impurity of the injected material.

Introduction: Cleft lip with or without cleft palate (CL/P) is the most common congenital face anomaly in the world of multifactorial etiology. Objective: To determine the prevalence and characteristics of cleft palate. To identify associated risk factors to guide prevention and/or prenatal detection for early intervention and better health outcomes. To assess the rehabilitation protocols after operations in cleft palate. Design: Retrospective descriptive and clinical study. Patients: One hundred and three children with cleft palate treated in the Department of Head and Neck Surgery Clinic for Children and Young Adults, Department of Clinical Pediatrics, University of Warmia and Mazury, were included in the study. Methods: Records evaluation was conducted regarding sex, cleft type, mother occupation, parents education, histories of cleft in any of parents. The data were analyzed using R (R core team 2021) and the ordinal logistic regression analyses. Results: Children of stressed mothers during pregnancy had 9.4 times higher odds of having bilateral cleft. While there was no evidence that children sex, order of birth, and body mass as well as risk of maternal toxicity at work or reporting infections or drugs toxicity had a significant effect on the dependent variable. Conclusions: Children of parents with cleft history and having low educated mothers had higher probability of bilateral cleft palate. Children of stressed mothers during pregnancy had higher odds of having bilateral cleft. In literature, there is a lack of reports about rehabilitation in different operations methods in children with cleft palates.

Background: Cleft lip and palate can affect the development of the maxilla, which may create a midfacial deficiency as well as an interference of the facial growth pattern and dentofacial esthetics. Objective: Estimate the chronological age of complete fusion of the spheno-occipital synchondrosis in cleft lip and/or palate patient´s and a control group, using cone beam computed tomography images. Methods: In this retrospective study, 125 patients were enrolled (cleft lip and/or palate group (n=91); control group (n=34)). Age comparison was made with Chi-square test and a Kaplan-Meyer analysis determined the median time to reach complete fusion of the spheno-occipital synchondrosis (p<0.05). Results: The experimental group showed statistically significant differences in the median time for complete ossification between males and females (p=0.019). No statistically significant differences were found in the control group between males and females (p=0.104). The median time for complete ossification of the spheno-occipital synchondrosis was, for males, 15.0 years in both groups; for females, it was 14.0 years in the experimental group and 13.0 years in the control group. Conclusions: The present study showed no differences in the ossification of the spheno-occipital synchondrosis between individuals with and without cleft lip and/or palate.

This paper introduces an innovative approach to lipreading, leveraging a web application designed to generate subtitles for videos where the speaker's mouth is visible and a comprehensive literature review that precedes the discussion, encompassing a thorough examination of various lipreading methods employed over the past decade. Our method employs a powerful deep learning model, featuring a 3D-convolution network and bidirectional LSTM, enabling accurate sentence-level predictions based solely on visual lip movements. With an impressive accuracy of 97%, our model is trained using pre-segmented lips regions, transformed into animated GIFs for effective pre-training. This work stands as a significant contribution to the evolving landscape of lipreading research, offering a practical and accurate solution for real-world applications.

The promised dataset was obtained from the daily Turkish words and phrases pronounced by various people in the videos posted on YouTube. The purpose of collecting the dataset is to provide detection of the spoken word by recognizing patterns or classifying lip movements with supervised, unsupervised, semi-supervised learning and machine learning algorithms. Most of the datasets related with lip reading consist of people recorded on camera with fixed backgrounds and the same conditions, but the dataset presented here consists of images compatible with machine learning models developed for real-life challenges. It contains a total of 2335 instances taken from TV series, movies, vlogs, and song clips on YouTube. The images in the dataset vary due to factors such as the way people say words, accent, speaking rate, gender and age. Furthermore, the instances in the dataset consist of videos with different angles, shadows, resolution, and brightness that are not created manually. The most important feature of our lip reading dataset is that we contribute to the non-synthetic Turkish dataset pool, which does not have wide dataset varieties. Machine learning studies can be carried out in many areas, such as the defense industry and social life, with this dataset.

The demand for sustainable cosmetics leads to the search for natural and biotechnology ingredients. The present study reports the development of multifunctional lip moisturizer containing levan (LEV) from Bacillus subtilis natto, sophorolipids (SOP) from Starmerella bombicola and Citrus paradisi (OCP) essential oil , using simplex-centroid experimental design. The formulations were evaluated physicochemically, pharmacotechnically and by DPPH assay. The optimized formulation was selected through Response Surface Method and the evaluation of its efficiency in lip hydration was carried out using bioimpedance method and sensory analysis. The formulations showed pH compatible with the lip region and remained stable after centrifuge test and thermal stress in preliminary stability. Spreadability varied between 415.3 and 1217.1 mm2, moisture retention was above 95%, and antioxidant capacity was around 50% for all formulations. The optimized formulation, containing 0.4% LEV and 0.8% SOF, helped to maintain the lip hydration already shown by the participants; 85% of them reported improvement in this aspect. The incorporation of these actives is innovative and helps in the development of future works, through the use of a new non-invasive and low-cost technique, not previously described in other studies, in association with relevant sensory analyzes in the field of cosmetology.
