The contamination on the insulators may increase its surface conductivity and, as a consequence, electrical discharges occur more frequently, which can lead to interruptions in the power supply. To maintain reliability in the electrical distribution power system, components that have lost their insulating properties must be replaced. Identifying the components that need maintenance, is a difficult task as there are several levels of contamination that are hardly noticed during inspections. To improve the quality of inspections, this paper proposes to use the k-nearest neighbours (k-NN) to classify the levels of insulator contamination, based on the image of insulators at various levels of contamination simulated in the laboratory. Using computer vision features such as mean, variance, asymmetry, kurtosis, energy, and entropy are used for training the k-NN. To assess the robustness of the proposed approach, statistical analysis and a comparative assessment with well-consolidated algorithms such as decision tree, ensemble subspace, and support vector machine models are presented. The k-NN showed results of up to 85.17 % accuracy using the k-fold cross-validation method, with an average accuracy higher than 82 % for multi-classification of the contamination of the insulators, being superior to the compared models.

The objectives of this paper are to investigate the tradeoffs between a physically constrained neural network and a deep, convolutional neural network and to design a combined ML approach ("VarioCNN"). Our solution is provided in the framework of a cyberinfrastructure that includes a newly designed ML software, GEOCLASS-image, modern high-resolution satellite image data sets (Maxar WorldView data) and instructions/descriptions that may facilitate solving similar spatial classification problems. Combining the advantages of the physically-driven connectionist-geostatistical classification method with those of an efficient CNN, VarioCNN provides a means for rapid and efficient extraction of complex geophysical information from submeter resolution satellite imagery. A retraining loop overcomes the difficulties of creating a labeled training data set. Computational analyses and developments are centered on a specific, but generalizable, geophysical problem: The classification of crevasse types that form during the surge of a glacier system. A surge is a glacial catastrophe, an acceleration of a glacier to typically 100-200 times its normal velocity. GEOCLASS-image is applied to study the current (2016-2024) surge in the Negribreen Glacier System, Svalbard. The geophysical result is a description of the structural evolution and expansion of the surge, based on crevasse types that capture ice deformation in six simplified classes.

Timely and accurate acquisition of information on distribution of the crop planting structure in Loess Plateau of eastern Gansu Province, one of the most important agricultural areas in western China, is crucial for promoting fine management of agriculture and ensuring food security. In this study, the Object-Based Image Classification (OBIC), the Random Forest (RF) and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) models were employed to classify the crop planting structure of four representative test areas in Qingyang City in a precise manner. Firstly, different optimal segmentation scales for various crops were selected using the Estimation of Scale Parameter 2 (ESP2) tool and the Ratio of Mean Difference to Neighbors(ABS) to Standard Deviation (RMAS)model. The images were then segmented through multiresolution segmentation combined with the Canny Edge Detection algorithm. Secondly, the L1 regularized logistic regression model was utilized to select and optimize 39 spatial feature factors including spectral, textural, geometric, and index features, in conjunction with phenological factors. Lastly, under the multi-level classification framework, the Random Forest (RF) classifier and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model, combined with object-based multiresolution segmentation, was used to classify the crop planting structure. The findings show that: Thanks to the Canny Edge Detection algorithm, we can obtain a more complete boundary of the segmented objects and improve the separability. The optimal segmentation scales for corn, vegetables, and buckwheat were found to be 55, 70, and 35, respectively, while wheat and apple had optimal segmentation scales of 65. In addition to phenological characteristics, the number of selected spatial features for corn, vegetables, buckwheat, wheat, and apple were 9, 7, 16, 12, and 10, respectively. The CNN model demonstrated high consistency with the RF model in the classification results, but the accuracy of RF model is higher than that of CNN model on the whole. The overall accuracy of classification using RF model in four test areas registered 91.93%, 94.92%, 89.37% and 90.68%, respectively. This paper introduced crop phenological factors, effectively improving the extraction precision of shattered agricultural planting structure in the Loess Plateau of eastern Gansu Province. Its findings have important application value in crop monitoring, management, food security and other related fields.

Malocclusions have a continuously increasing prevalence from a generation to another as a result of climate changes, soil, atmosphere and water pollution. All of these aspects have unfavorable consequences on the nutritional scheme. Thus, nutrition together with other etiopathogenic factors contribute to complex alterations in the somatic development of the entire organism and, implicitly, of the cephalic extremity. The study group included 4147 children from randomly selected schools from Vâlcea County, Romania. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of malocclusions in schoolchildren from Vâlcea County, Romania, according to the three main classes of malocclusions (according to Angle’s classification), age groups (from 6 to 10 years old and from 11 to 14 years old), gender (male and female) and place of origin (rural and urban). For Angle class I malocclusions we recorded the highest prevalence (48,78% from the total number of schoolchildren with malocclusions), followed by Angle class II malocclusions (45,85% from the total number of schoolchildren with malocclusions) and for Angle class III malocclusions we found the lowest prevalence (5,37% from the total number of schoolchildren with malocclusions).According to gender, we found the highest prevalence in female gender (29,90% from the total number of female subjects), while in male gender we recorded a prevalence of 27,70% from the total number of male subjects. Regarding the place of origin, there is a higher prevalence of malocclusions in the urban areas (29,16%). The study subgroup included 140 children randomly selected from the total number of subjects from the study group. They were included in a more advanced study. The aim is to find potential associations between the presence of malocclusions and various oral variables. Categorical variables were expressed as numerical values and percentages, and their association was evaluated with either the Chi-square test of association or homogeneity, or the Fisher Exact test. The acquired data were incorporated into a binomial logistic regression model to assess the likelihood of developing malocclusions in relation to the following variables: defective phonation, bruxism, frequency of teeth brushing, onychophagia, oral respiration, infantile deglutition, placing objects between the maxillaries, thumb sucking and salivary aspects. It is also aimed to compare the results obtained with similar ones from the specialized literature.

Cleft lip and palate are the most common congenital craniofacial anomalies. The etiology of this condition is unclear. The overall incidence of cleft lip and palate is 1/700. Prenatal diagnosis of cleft lip by 3D ultrasound is possible in more than 70% of cases, while it is less effective for cleft palate. There are several classifications of cleft lip and palate that were proposed over the years, however, only few have found clinical application, with none of them generally accepted as most effective and understandable. Allori et al. presented classification of a cleft lip and palate which is comprehensive and uniform, and it can precisely define the vast majority of the clefts, thus enabling easier communication between the health workers during their everyday practice. In this paper, we compared the accuracy of preoperative diagnoses compared to intraoperative diagnoses according to Kernahan and Stark classification from 1958, and these diagnoses were converted according to the Allori et al. classification of cleft lip and palate. Classification of cleft lip and palate presented by Allori et al. is clear, easy to understand, and it can be successful tool in studying the epidemiology of clefts.

Motion related human activity recognition using wearable sensors can potentially enable various useful daily applications. So far, most studies view it as a stand-alone mathematical classification problem without considering the physical nature of human motions. Consequently, they suffer from data dependencies and encounter the dimension disaster problem and the over-fitting issue, and their models are never human-readable. In this study, we start from a deep analysis on natural physical properties of human motions, and then propose a useful feature selection method to quantify each feature's classification contribution capability. On one hand, the "dimension disaster" problem can be avoid to some extent, due to the affined dimension of key features; On the other hand, over-fitting issue can be depressed since the knowledge implied in human motions are nearly invariant, which compensates the possible data inadequacy. The experiment results indicate that the proposed method performs superior to those adopted in related works, such as decision tree, k-NN, SVM, neural networks.

This study analyzes groups about game performance elements and sport class composition in each country by utilizing official records provided by major international wheelchair basketball games. To achieve the objective of this study, major game factors were explored by analyzing descriptive statistics in each year regarding the latest trend of sport class composition and playing time of each sport class and conducting the difference test between the groups. To analyze performance details of international wheelchair basketball games, this study selected official records of 209 games of 24 teams that participated in major international wheelchair basketball games. A test for difference also was conducted to examine the sport class composition, playing time, and game details of each group. First, scoring factors directly affecting the game results were compared between the groups. The result of this difference test shows that the success rate of 2-point and 3-point shots was significantly different except for the free throw success rate. The numbers of assists, defense rebounds, and steals were significantly different. Second, the medal group was compared with the other group, the average class of the other group's participation in quarters was higher than that of the medal group and the difference was significant. Regarding the difference between groups in terms of game performance, the difference in playing time between the medal group and the other group was in the order of 2.5 points, 4.0 points, 3.0 points, and 1.5 points. Third, given the general trend in 2012 to 2022 international events, the sport class composition and para-athlete played minutes in quarterly participation changes.

Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICCA) is a malignant epithelial neoplasm characterized by biliary differentiation within the liver. ICCA is molecularly heterogeneous and exhibits a broad spectrum of histopathological features. It is a highly aggressive carcinoma with high mortality and poor survival rates. ICCAs are classified into two main subtypes: small duct type and large duct types. These two tumor types have different cell origins and clinicopathological features. ICCAs are characterized by numerous molecular alterations, including mutations in KRAS, TP53, IDH1/2, ARID1A, BAP1, BRAF, SAMD4, and EGFR, and FGFR2 fusion. Two main molecular subtypes–inflammation and proliferation–have been proposed. Recent advances in high-throughput assays using next-generation sequencing have improved our understanding of ICCA pathogenesis and molecular genetics. The diagnosis of ICCA poses a significant challenge for pathologists because of its varied morphologies and phenotypes. Accurate diagnosis of ICCA is essential for effective patient management and prognostic determination. This article provides an updated overview of ICCA pathology, focusing particularly on molecular features, histological subtypes, and diagnostic approaches.

Diabetic retinopathy, a common complication of diabetes, is further exacerbated by factors such as hypertension and obesity. This study introduces the Diabetic Retinopathy Convolutional Transformer (DRCT) model, which combines convolutional and transformer techniques to enhance the classification of retinal images. The DRCT model achieved an impressive average F1 score of 0.97, reflecting its high accuracy in detecting true positives while minimizing false positives. Throughout 100 training epochs, the model exhibited strong generalization capabilities, achieving superior validation accuracy with minimal overfitting. On a newly evaluated dataset, the model attained precision and recall scores of 96.93% and 98.89%, respectively, indicating a well-balanced handling of false positives and false negatives. The model's ability to classify retinal images into five distinct diabetic retinopathy categories demonstrates its potential to significantly improve automated diagnosis and aid in clinical decision-making.

This critical review revisited the new classification system for periodontitis, specifically for staging, suggesting modifications, and introducing a new flowchart for a better clinical evaluation. It evaluated articles published between 2018 and 2024 in the English language, which had an educational motivation focused on staging periodontitis. PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, and Embase databases were used to retrieve the articles. The focus questions involved the analysis of all parameters for staging periodontitis. A total of 836 articles were initially found; 388 duplicated were excluded; 448 were evaluated by title and abstract; 26 articles followed for full-text reading, and 6 articles were included in this critical review (k=0.98). All articles included detailed parameters and steps about how to diagnose periodontitis. Therefore, it was possible to observe instability and “gray zones” in the staging step, which was due to a lack of priority and an organized order sequence. This review suggests the severity parameters cannot be overcome by complexity parameters, following a cumulative sequence: CAL (1^st), RBL (2^nd), TLP (3^rd), and, after, complexity parameters. An exception must be permitted only for complexity factors between Stages III and IV that can change the initial Stage (III or IV) obtained through the severity analysis, but only between themselves. Moreover, for patients without tooth loss or with TLP of ≤4 teeth (without need for complex rehabilitation) and presenting any type of drifting or flaring or a secondary traumatic occlusion, it cannot be a justification for moving the diagnosis from Stage III to Stage IV.

The dynamics of surface and sub-surface water events can lead to slope instability resulting in anomalies such as slough slides on earthen levees. Early detection of these anomalies by a remote sensing approach could save time versus direct assessment. We have implemented a supervised Mahalanobis distance classification algorithm for the detection of slough slides on levees using complex polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar (polSAR) data. The classifier output was followed by a spatial majority filter post-processing step which improved the accuracy. The effectiveness of the algorithm is demonstrated using fully quad-polarimetric L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery from the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s (JPL’s) Uninhabited Aerial Vehicle Synthetic Aperture Radar (UAVSAR). The study area is a section of the lower Mississippi River valley in the southern USA. Slide detection accuracy of up to 98 percent was achieved, although the number of available slides examples was small.

The exponential rise of bacterial resistance poses a threat to antibiotic efficacy, with a great impact on public health. This study aims to analyze the correlation between antibiotic consumption and the emergence of bacterial resistance. Conducted retrospectively at Charles Nicolle Hospital in Tunis, Tunisia from 2010 to 2022, this study was based on STKMED® software for antibiotic consumption data, hospital administrative records for the number of hospitalization days, and SIRSCAN® software for bacteriological data. Data processing was performed using Excel® software, and analysis was conducted using SPSS23®. In 2022, Consumption was almost evenly split between the two major “AWaRe” groups, with 49.33% for "Access" and 46.89% for "Watch", and the consumption of the "Reserve" group also increased, accounting for 3.77% of the total. Bacterial resistances, notably carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae, increased. Seventy-four significant correlations were identified, including those be-tween carbapenem consumption and resistance in Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae strains. However, no significant corre-lation was observed with imipenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains. The significant correlations between the emergence of bacterial resistance and antibiotic use, particularly with antibiotics in the "Watch" and "Reserve" groups, underscore the urgent need to continue efforts to combat this threat through rational antibiotic use.

Objectives: To assess the concordance of the preoperative application of the #Enzian classification (#ENZIANi) with the postoperative result (#ENZIANs) using surgical findings as the reference standard. Methods: This retrospective study included 282 consecutive patients with deep endometriosis undergoing surgical treatment. Preoperative assessment with transvaginal sonography and magnetic resonance imaging was compared with postoperative assessment. Concordance and diagnostic test evaluation were calculated. Results: The highest concordance was observed in the F (abdominal wall endometriosis) with k Cohen of 0.837, following the values for pelvic locations, with 0.795 for T left, 0.791 for T right, 0.776 for F (adenomyosis), 0.766 for C (rectum), and 0.75 and 0.72 for O right k and O left, respectively. The highest sensitivity was demonstrated for the P compartment *(98%), T compartment (both sides 97%), and A, B, C (94%- 96%), corresponding with deep endometriosis. Conclusions: Preoperative assessment using TVS/TAS+MRI with the ENZIANi score correlates well with the ENZIANs postoperative score and demonstrates good concordance in the detection and localization of deep endometriosis, thereby minimizing false negative results and ensuring accurate preoperative staging. The ENZIAN classification is well-suited to surgeons' needs and benefits from continuous development. Future improvements, such as adding the expanded C module, may be considered in the next edition.

With the widespread adoption of 3D scanners, reverse engineering methods for obtaining CAD drawings from physical objects have become increasingly utilized. When converting point data obtained from a 3D scanner into a mesh structure, a smoothing process is typically applied because the point data often contains a lot of noise. However, this can result in the loss of important high-frequency details, or in cases where significant high-frequency information remains, there are limitations in representing the object with basic geometric shapes. In this paper, a method to address this issue by using environment mapping and supervised learning techniques is proposed. By mapping the object to an environment and then using supervised learning to analyze the data, it can accurately identify the basic geometric shapes. This approach reduces the working time and allows for easier design of complex surfaces that were previously difficult to model.

Background: Burns are a common and severe medical emergency requiring immediate specialized care to minimize damage and prevent complications. Burn severity depends on depth, extent, and location, with more complex care needed for burns on critical areas or extensive burns. Nursing is essential in burn management, providing immediate care, adapting treatments, managing pain, preventing infections, and offering emotional support for recovery. Methods: Retrospective, observational study that analyzed burn cases treated at the Hospital Complex of Cáceres (Spain) 2018-2022. Inclusion criteria were based on ICD-10 codes for burns, excluding severe cases not treated in this service. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Student's t-tests, Chi-square tests, and ANOVA. Results: 220 patients, with a mean age of 47 years and 60.9% male. Most burns (95.5%) affected the external body surface, with a mean hospital stay of 7.86 days. Medical treatment was provided to 75.5% of patients, and 24.5% required surgical intervention. Significant differences in treatment procedures were observed according to age, skin thickness, and burn degree. Older patients had more procedures and longer hospital stays. Excision and transfer procedures were more common in full-thickness and severe burns. Conclusions: The findings align with previous research on burn demographics and treatment approaches. Treatment differences by age and burn severity highlight the need for tailored interventions. The study underscores the importance of comprehensive burn management, including psychological support for improved long-term outcomes. Further research could explore the impact of socio-economic factors on burn incidence and treatment.

This paper focuses on optimal sensor positioning for monitoring activities of daily living and investigates different combinations of features and models on different sensor positions, i.e., the side of the waist, front of the waist, chest, thigh, head, upper arm, wrist, and ankle. Sixteen features are extracted and the feature importance is measured by using the Relief-F feature selection algorithm. Eight classification algorithms are evaluated on a dataset collected from young subjects and that collected from elderly subjects, with two different experimental settings. To deal with different sampling rates, signals with a high data rate are down-sampled and a transformation matrix is used for aligning signals to the same coordinate system. The thigh, chest, side of the waist, and front of the waist are the best four sensor positions for the first dataset (young subjects), with average accuracy values being greater than 95%. The best model obtained from the first dataset for the side of the waist is validated on the second dataset (elderly subjects). The most appropriate number of features for each sensor position is reported. The results provide a reference for building activity recognition models for different sensor positions, as well as for data acquired from different hardware platforms and subject groups.

Correct diagnosis and early treatment of respiratory diseases can significantly improve the health status of patients, reduce healthcare expences, and enhance quality of life. Therefore, there has been extensive interest in developing automatic respiratory disease detection systems. Most of these methods have recently been using machine and deep learning algorithms. The success of machine learning methods depends heavily on the selection of proper features to be used in the classifier. Although metaheuristic-based feature selection methods have been successful in addressing difficulties presented by high-dimensional medical data in various biomedical classification tasks, there is not much research on the utilization of metaheuristic methods in respiratory disease classification. This paper aims to conduct a detailed and comparative analysis of six widely used metaheuristic optimization methods using eight different transfer functions in respiratory disease classification. For this purpose, two different classification cases were examined: binary and multi-class. The findings demonstrate that metaheuristic algorithms using correct transfer functions could effectively reduce data dimensionality while enhancing classification accuracy.

Incorrect sitting posture, characterized by asymmetrical or uneven positioning of the body, often leads to spinal misalignment and muscle tone imbalance. Prolonged maintenance of such postures can adversely impact well-being and contribute to the development of spinal deformities and musculoskeletal disorders. In response, smart-sensing chairs equipped with cutting-edge sensor technologies have been introduced as a viable solution for real-time detection, classification, and monitoring of sitting postures, aiming to mitigate the risk of musculoskeletal disorders and promote overall health. This comprehensive literature review evaluates the current body of research on smart-sensing chairs, with a specific focus on the strategies used for posture detection and classification, as well as the effectiveness of different sensor technologies. A meticulous search across MDPI, IEEE, and Google Scholar databases yielded 34 pertinent studies that utilize non-invasive methods for posture monitoring. The analysis reveals that Force Sensing Resistors (FSR) are the predominant sensors utilized for posture detection, whereas Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) and Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) are the leading machine learning models for posture classification. However, it was observed that CNNs and ANNs do not outperform traditional statistical models in terms of classification accuracy, due to constrained size and lack of diversity within training datasets. These datasets often fail to comprehensively represent the array of human body shapes and musculoskeletal configurations. Moreover, this review identifies a significant gap in the evaluation of user feedback mechanisms, essential for alerting users to their sitting posture and facilitating corrective adjustments.

With the development of deep learning, several Graph Neural Networks (GNN)-based approaches have been utilized for text classification. However, GNNs encounter challenges in capturing contextual text information within a document sequence. To address this, a novel text classification model RB-GAT is proposed by combining RoBERTa-BiGRU embedding and a multi-head Graph ATtention Network (GAT). First, the pre-trained RoBERTa model is exploited to learn word and text embeddings in different contexts. Second, the Bidirectional Gated Recurrent Unit (BiGRU) is employed to capture long-term dependencies and bidirectional sentence information from the text context. Next, the multi-head graph attention network is applied to analyze this information, which serves as a node feature for the document. Finally, the classification results are generated through a Softmax layer. Experimental results on three benchmark datasets demonstrate that our method can achieve an accuracy of 71.48%, 98.45%, and 80.32% on Ohsumed, R8, and MR, which is superior to the existing nine text classification approaches.

This paper introduces a novel framework for zero-shot learning (ZSL), i.e., to recognize new categories that are unseen during training, by distilling knowledge from foundation models. Specifically, we first employ ChatGPT and DALL-E to synthesize reference images of unseen categories from text prompts. Then, the test image is aligned with text and reference images using CLIP and DINO. Finally, the predicted logits are aggregated according to their confidence to produce the final prediction.Experiments are conducted on multiple datasets, including CIFAR-10, CIFAR-100, and TinyImageNet. The results demonstrate that our model can significantly improve classification accuracy compared to previous approaches, achieving AUROC scores above 96\% across all test datasets. Hyperspectral images (HSI) contain abundant spectral information. Efficient extraction and utilization of this information for image classification remain prominent research topics. Previously, hyperspectral classification techniques primarily relied on statistical attributes and mathematical models of spectral data. Deep learning classification techniques have recently been extensively utilized for hyperspectral data classification, yielding promising outcomes. This study proposes a deep learning approach that uses polarization feature maps for classification. Initially, the polar coordinate transformation method is employed to convert the spectral information of all pixels in the image into spectral feature maps. Subsequently, the proposed Deep Context Feature Fusion Network (DCFF-NET) is utilized to classify these feature maps. The model is validated using three open-source hyperspectral datasets: Indian Pines, Pavia University, and Salinas. The experimental results indicated that DCFF-NET achieves excellent classification performance. Experimental results on three public HSI datasets demonstrate that the proposed method accurately recognizes different objects with an overall accuracy (OA) of 86.68%, 94.73%, and 95.14% based on the pixel method, and 98.15%, 99.86%, and 99.98% based on the pixel-patch method.

The rise in both the frequency of natural disasters and the ubiquity of artificial intelligence has led to novel applications of new technologies in improving disaster response processes, such as the labor-intensive assessment of disaster damages. Assessment of residential and commercial structure damages, a precursory step to government agencies being able to provide most of their financial assistance, has benefited from aerial and satellite imagery-based computer vision models; however, limitations of using such imagery include the ground structures being obscured by clouds or smoke, as well as the lack of resolution to distinguish individual structures from others. Using a different data source, we propose a damage severity classification model using ground-level imagery, focusing on residential structures damaged by wildfires. This classifier, a Vision Transformer (ViT) model trained on over 18,000 professionally labeled images of damaged homes from the 2020-2022 California wildfires, has achieved an accuracy score of over 95%. Further, we have open sourced the training dataset–the first of its kind and scale–as well as built a publicly available web application prototype, which we demoed to and received feedback from disaster response officials, both of which further contribute to the broader literature beyond the proposed model.

This study presents an advanced data augmentation framework to enhance diagnostics in centrifugal pumps using vibration data, with a focus on practical industrial applications. Initially, Gaussian noise and signal stretching were employed to generate synthetic data, addressing the common issue of insufficient defect data in industrial settings. These methods simulate varied operating conditions and different rotating speeds. Recognizing the limitations of traditional approaches, we further integrated advanced models—Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), Autoencoder (AE), and Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) to augment the dataset comprehensively. This enhanced approach increases the robustness and accuracy of machine-learning models for fault detection and classification. Experimental results show significant improvements in diagnostic algorithm performance, reducing false positives and increasing fault detection rates. The study offers a complete framework for incorporating both traditional and advanced data augmentation techniques into predictive maintenance protocols, ensuring reliable operation of centrifugal pumps in diverse industrial environments.

Accurate crop diseases classification is crucial for ensuring food security and enhancing agricultural productivity. However, existing crop disease classification algorithms primarily focus on a single image modality and typically require a large number of samples. Our research counters these issues by using pre-trained Vision-Language Models (VLMs), which enhances multimodal synergy for better crop disease classification than traditional unimodal approaches. Firstly, we apply the multimodal model Qwen-VL to generate meticulous textual descriptions for representative disease images selected through clustering from the training set, which will serve as prompt text for generating classifier weights. Compared to using solely the language model for prompt text generation, this approach better captures and conveys fine-grained and image-specific information, thereby enhancing prompt quality. Secondly, we integrate the cross-attention and the SE (Squeeze-and-Excitation) attention into the training-free mode VLCD (Vision-Language model for Crop Diseases classification) and the training-required mode VLCD-T (VLCD-Training) respectively for prompt text processing, enhancing classifier weights by emphasizing key text features. Experimental outcomes conclusively prove our method’s heightened classification effectiveness in few-shot crop disease scenarios, tackling data limitations and intricate disease recognition issues. It offers a pragmatic tool for agricultural pathology and reinforces the smart farming surveillance infrastructure.

Classifying network flow subsequences in an Industrial IoT gateway is an effective method for identifying Industrial IoT faults. This paper proposes a subsequence classification algorithm SSGBUL-IKNN based on unsupervised learning encoding to address the problem of low classification accuracy. Firstly, we built a network module based on unsupervised learning to encode the flow sequence of the Industrial IoT gateway. In the encoding module, a subsequence calibration algorithm controls the increasing error during the coding process. Then, the specific fault type is obtained through an improved KNN classification algorithm based on the indication distance source from the integrated coding sequences converted by multi-dimensional network flow sequences. The test result on three Industrial IoT datasets of a sewage treatment plant shows that the accuracy of SSGBUL-IKNN in this paper exceeds 92%, significantly higher than the algorithm DTW and TSF. It reaches the classification requirements of Industrial IoT fault diagnosis.

The ability to detect the presence as well as classify the activities of individuals behind visually obscuring structures is of significant benefit to police, security and emergency services in many situations. This paper presents the analysis from a series of experimental results generated using a through-the-wall (TTW) Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) C-Band radar system named Soprano. The objective of this analysis was to classify whether an individual was carrying an item in both hands or not using micro-Doppler information from a FMCW sensor. The radar was deployed at a standoff distance, of approximately 0.5 m, outside a residential building and used to detect multiple people walking within a room. Through the application of digital filtering, it was shown that significant suppression of the primary wall reflection is possible, significantly enhancing the target signal to clutter ratio. Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) signal processing techniques were then applied to the micro-Doppler signatures from different individuals. Features from the SVD information have been used to classify whether the person was carrying an item or walking free handed. Excellent performance of the classifier was achieved in this challenging scenario with accuracies up to 94%, suggesting that future through wall radar sensors may have the ability to reliably recognize many different types of activities in TTW scenarios using these techniques.

Categorical variables are common in spatial data analysis. Traditional analytical methods for deriving probabilities of class occurrence, such as kriging-family algorithms, have been hindered by the discrete characteristics of categorical fields. This study introduces the theoretical backgrounds of linear Bayesian updating (LBU) approach for spatial classification through expert system. Transition probabilities are interpreted as expert opinions for updating the prior marginal probabilities of categorical response variables. The main objective of this paper is to present the solid theoretical foundations of LBU and provide a categorical random field prediction method which yields relatively higher classification accuracy compared with conventional Markov chain random field (MCRF) approach. A real-world case study has also been carried out to demonstrate the superiority of our method. Since the LBU idea is originated from aggregating expert opinions and not restricted to conditional independent assumption (CIA), it may prove to be reasonably adequate for analyzing complex geospatial data sets, like remote sensing images or area-class maps.

Prostate cancer (PCa) ranks as the second most fatal and sixth most prevalent cancer among males globally. This study focuses on leveraging deep learning networks to detect the Gleason grading of prostate cancer from histopathology images stained with Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E). Six pathologists annotated the images, resulting in six distinct labels for each input image. A common ground truth label was established through majority voting approach. Subsequently, the dataset was trained using architectures: UNeT, UNeT++, DeepLabV3, DeepLabV3+, and GAN based segmentation network. Notably, GAN based network demonstrated superior performance, achieving an F1-score of 0.872 and a Jaccard Index of 0.777, outperforming the other architectures considered in this study.

Submerged aquatic vegetation, also referred to as submerged macrophytes, provides important habitats and serves as a significant ecological indicator for assessing the condition of water bodies and for gaining insights into the impacts of climate change. In this study, we introduce a novel approach for the extensive monitoring of submerged vegetation, validated against established monitoring techniques. Employing full waveform airborne laser scanning, frequently used for topographic mapping and forestry applications on dry land, we extend its application to the detection of underwater vegetation in Lake Constance. The primary focus of this research lies in the automatic classification of LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) point clouds, distinguishing the three vegetation classes (i) Low Vegetation, (ii) High Vegetation, and (iii) Vegetation Canopy based on their height. The results reveal detailed three-dimensional representation of submerged vegetation, enabling the identification of vegetation structures and inference of vegetation types with reference to pre-existing knowledge. While the results within training areas demonstrate high precision and alignment with comparative data, the findings in test areas exhibit comprehensible deficiencies that are likely addressable through corrective measures in the future.

This paper presents a repository of image databases where the image features are augmented with embedded vector field (VF) features to enhance the machine learning (ML) and increase classification statistics. Six VFs are formulated and used for the purpose of embedding. Three of them generate real shaped singular points (SPs): springing, sinking and saddle. The other three VFs generate seven kinds of SPs which include the real shaped SPs and four complex shaped SPs: repealing and attracting (out and in) spirals; clockwise and counterclockwise orbits (center). Also, the paper describes the VF singularities, their shapes, and locations according to the image objects. Then, the present work defines the mappings between the SPs’ shapes if the VFs are separately embedded into the same image. Thus, the paper infers which VFs are most appropriate for embedding into a particular image database such that the augmented SPs shapes enhance the ML classification. Examples of images with different embedded VFs are shown, in the text, to support and validate the theoretical conclusions. The contributions of the paper are: a description of the SPs location in an image; the mappings between the SPs of the different VFs; the definition of an imprint of an image in a VF; the generation of databases’ imprints. The advantage of classifying an image database with embedded VFs is that the new database enhances ML and improves the classification statistics if compared to the classification of the original image database with the same ML classifier. Furthermore, images with embedded SPs create a useful augmentation to the original image databases.

The research of object classification and part segmentation is a hot topic in computer vision. A considerable number of studies have been carried out about deep learning on 3D point clouds. However,it is challenging to achieve effective feature learning due to sparsity of point clouds. Recently, a variety of Transformers have been adopted to improve point cloud processing and display great potential. Nevertheless, large numbers of Transformer layers tend to incur huge computational and memory costs. PointNet++ is one of the most influential neural architectures for point cloud understanding. Although the accuracy of PointNet++ has been largely surpassed by recent networks, this does not mean that PointNet++ has no potential.Thus, this paper offer two major contributions that significantly improve PointNet++ performance. Firstly, we introduce a novel contextual feature extraction (CFE) block that significantly enhances the feature extraction capabilities of PointNet++ networks. Secondly, to further enhance feature fusion, we seamlessly integrate a mutual learning (ML) block into the network architecture. By embedding these two innovative blocks within each layer of the network, we not only enrich the network's functionality but also impart it with greater robustness and adaptability. The specific experiments were conducted on the S3DIS (6-fold cross-validation) and Modelnet40 datasets with 86.5% and 92.7% accuracy, respectively, which proved that our model is comparable or even better than most existing methods for classification and segmentation tasks.

This study evaluates the effectiveness of Darknet53 and VGG16 pretrained models to develop a hybrid ensemble model named HybridPlantNet23 deep learning model for effective plant disease classification, using the publicly available dataset ‘A Dataset of Leaf Images’ from Mendeley webpage. The preprocessing of the dataset involved resizing the images to the respective requirements of the pretrained models to develop a combined datastore which served as the input. All experiments were conducted using MATLAB R2023b deep network designer interface. Model performances were evaluated based on the conventional accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score. VGG16 achieved the highest accuracy (97.25%), precision (96.30%), recall (96.96%), and F1-score (96.55%), outperforming both Darknet53 and the ensemble HybridPlantNet23 model. Despite the advanced architecture of the ensemble model, its performance (accuracy: 95.37%, precision: 93.56%, recall: 94.20%, F1-score: 93.74%) was not significantly superior, thus highlighting scientific reasons behind this development. Recommendations for future works were provided accordingly.

To ensure consumers can purchase high-quality rice, accurate identification of rice varieties is particularly important. Methods: This article conducts research based on machine learning algorithms from the perspectives of image, spectrum, and spectrogram fusion. Six types of hyperspectral image data of rice were preprocessed using convolutional smoothing (SG) and multiple scatter correction (MSC). Texture information of the images was extracted using gray-level co-occurrence matrix. Spectra, texture, and spectrogram data were fused into a new matrix. Spectral, texture, and spectrogram fusion data were used as inputs for the model, and support vector machines (SVM), logistic regression (LR), and K-nearest neighbors (KNN) classification models were constructed and compared. Results: From the classification results, the spectrogram fusion classification performance was better than classification models using only spectra or texture. Conclusion: The research results showed that the accuracy of SVM and LR classification models exceeded 90%, and the LR model performed the best, effectively classifying rice varieties.

The expansion of renewable energies is progressing strongly. The influence on the power supply networks by the volatility of the infeed must be met with new concepts. In this paper we investigate the possibilities of integrating microgrids as a cooperating unit in the power supply network to support further expansion of RES power plants. In this paper a differentiation of microgrids from similar network structures is established, a classification of proposed groups is made. Then, after the description of simulation of components in a microgrid, with practical advice, an example model is shown, which aids the dimensioning of the components within a microgrid to achieve a specified goal.

In this proposed work, five systems were developed to classify four motor functions—forward hand movement (FW), grasp (GP), release (RL), and reverse hand movement (RV)—from EEG signals. The dataset used is WAY-EEG-GAL, involving participants performing a sequence of hand movements. During preprocessing, bandpass filtering was applied to remove artifacts and focus on the mu and beta frequency bands. The first system, a preliminary study model, explored the overall framework of EEG signal processing and classification. It utilized time-domain features like variance and frequency-domain features like alpha and beta power, with classification performed using a KNN model. Insights from this system informed the development of a baseline system, which uses the same dataset but different feature extraction and classification paradigms. This baseline system combined the common spatial patterns (CSP) method with continuous wavelet transform (CWT) for feature extraction and employed a GoogLeNet classifier with transfer learning. Classification was performed on six unique pairs of events derived from the four motor functions, using both intrasubject and intersubject methods. The baseline system achieved the highest accuracy of 99.73% for the GP-RV pair and the lowest accuracy of 80.87% for the FW-GP pair in intersubject classification. Building on this, three additional systems were developed to perform 4-way classification. Among these, the final model, ML-CSP-OVR, achieved the highest intersubject classification accuracy of 78.08% using all combined data and 76.39% for leave-one-out intersubject classification. This proposed model, which features a novel combination of CSP-OVR, CWT, and GoogLeNet, demonstrates strong potential as a general system for motor imagery (MI) tasks without being subject-dependent.

In this study, we introduce an innovative framework for multimodal learning that leverages enhanced fusion gate units within gated neural network architectures. The proposed Fusion Gate Unit (FGU) serves as a pivotal component in neural network designs, aiming to derive a comprehensive intermediate representation by amalgamating data from diverse modalities. The FGU is adept at determining the extent to which each modality influences the unit's activation through the utilization of multiplicative gating mechanisms. We conducted evaluations on a multilabel genre classification task for movies, utilizing both plot summaries and poster images as input modalities. The results demonstrate that the FGU significantly elevates the macro F-score compared to single-modality approaches and surpasses existing fusion techniques, including mixture of experts models. Additionally, we present the MM-IMDb dataset alongside this publication, which, to our knowledge, represents the most extensive publicly accessible multimodal dataset for movie genre prediction to date. This dataset is expected to facilitate further research and development in the field of multimodal information processing.

Objective: To develop an algorithm that accurately identifies children with Down syndrome (DS) using administrative data. Methods: We identified a cohort of children born 2000-2017, enrolled in a state Medicaid program, who either had DS coded on the birth certificate or had a diagnosis listed using an International Classification of Diseases (ICD) code (suspected DS), and who received care at a comprehensive academic medical center in the United States. Children with suspected DS were defined as having DS if they had a) karyotype confirmed DS indicated on their birth certificate; b) karyotype pending DS indicated on their birth certificate (or just DS if test type was not specified) and at least two healthcare encounters for DS during the first 6 years of life; or c) at least three healthcare encounters for DS, with the first and last encounter separated by at least 30 days, during the first six years of life. Positive predictive value (PPV) of the algorithm and 95% confidence interval (CI) were reported. Results: Of the 411 children with suspected DS, 354 (86.1%) were defined as having DS by the algorithm. According to medical chart review, the algorithm correctly identified 347 children with DS (PPV=98%, 95%CI: 96.0%-99.0%). Of the 57 children the algorithm defined as not having DS, 50 (97.7%, 95%CI: 76.8%-93.9%) were confirmed not having DS by medical chart review. Conclusions: An algorithm that accurately identifies individuals with DS using birth certificate data and/or ICD codes provides a valuable tool to study DS using administrative data.

Postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) is a significant cause of maternal morbidity and mortality worldwide, particularly in low-resource settings. This study aimed to develop a predictive model for PPH using early risk factors and rank their importance in terms of predictive ability. The dataset was obtained from an observational case-control study in Northern Rwanda. Various statistical models and machine learning techniques were evaluated, including logistic regression, logistic re-gression with elastic-net regularisation, Random Forest, Extremely Randomized Trees, and gradient boosted trees with XGBoost. Random Forest emerged as the best predictive model for PPH across three different train-test data partitions. The important predictors identified in the study were haemoglobin level during labour and maternal age. However, there were differences in PPH risk factor importance in different data partitions, highlighting the need for further investigation. These findings contribute to understanding PPH risk factors, highlight the importance of considering different data partitions and implementing cross-validation in predictive modelling, and emphasise the value of identifying the appropriate prediction model for the application. Effective PPH pre-diction models are essential for improving maternal health outcomes on a global scale. This study provides valuable insights for healthcare providers to develop predictive models for PPH to identify high-risk women and implement targeted interventions

Domain generalization has led to remarkable achievements in Hyperspectral Image (HSI) classification. Inspired by contrastive language-image pre-training (CLIP), the language-aware domain generalization method has been explored to learn cross-domain-invariant representation. However, existing methods face some challenges: 1) The weak capacity to extract long-range contextual information and inter-class correlation. 2) Due to the inadequacies of the large-scale pre-training for HSI data, the spatial-spectral features of HSI and linguistic features can not be straightforwardly alignment. To address the above problems, a novel network has been proposed with a CLIP framework, which consists of an image encoder, based on an encoder-only transformer to obtain the global contextual information and inter-class correlation, a frozen text encoder, and a cross-attention mechanism, named Linguistic-Interact-with-Visual Engager (LIVE), enhances the interaction between two modalities. Extensive experiments demonstrating superior performance over state-of-the-art methods in HSI Domain Generalization with a CLIP framework.

This study introduces SkinLiTE, a lightweight supervised contrastive learning model, tailored to enhance the detection and typification of skin lesions in dermoscopic images. The core of SkinLiTE lies in its unique integration of supervised and contrastive learning approaches, which leverages labeled data to learn generalizable representations. This approach is particularly adept at handling the complexities and imbalances inherent in skin lesions datasets. The methodology encompasses a two-phase learning process. In the first phase, SkinLiTE utilizes an encoder network and a projection head to transform and project dermoscopic images into a feature space where contrastive loss is applied, focusing on minimizing intra-class variations while maximizing inter-class differences. The second phase freezes the encoder's weights, leveraging the learned representations for classification through a series of dense and dropout layers. The model was evaluated using three datasets from Skin Cancer ISIC 2019-2020, covering a wide range of skin conditions. SkinLiTE demonstrated superior performance across various metrics—accuracy, AUC , and F1 score—particularly when compared with traditional supervised learning models. Notably, SkinLiTE achieved an accuracy of 0.9087 using AugMix augmentation for binary classification of skin lesions. It also showed comparable results with the state-of-the-art approaches of ISIC challenge without relying on external data, underscoring its efficacy and efficiency. The results highlight the potential of SkinLiTE as a significant step forward in the field of dermatological AI, offering a robust, efficient, and accurate tool for skin lesion detection and classification. Its lightweight architecture and ability to handle imbalanced datasets make it particularly suited for integration into Internet of Medical Things environments, paving the way for enhanced remote patient monitoring and diagnostic capabilities. This research contributes to the evolving landscape of AI in healthcare, demonstrating the impact of innovative learning methodologies in medical image analysis.

White blood cells are crucial for immune defense in the human body, and fluctuations in their levels can lead to severe health issues. This research introduces a system designed for the localization and classification of white blood cells. The dataset utilized comprises two segments: one for localization consisting of 364 annotated images, and another for classification with 12,444 labeled images. The purpose of this study is to develop and evaluate a robust system for the accurate localization and classification of white blood cells using deep learning techniques. The study explores two localization methods—a traditional technique and a deep learning-based approach—and evaluates five deep learning architectures for classification, including three pretrained and two custom models. Upon testing these models on the dataset, the study identifies and evaluates the most effective approach. The localization process achieved an average Intersection over Union (IoU) of 71%, and the classification process reached an accuracy of 92%. The robustness of the model was further assessed by introducing different types of noise to test its resilience. The performance of this system demonstrates high accuracy and resilience to noise, which can be attributed to the use of a large dataset, our developed architectures, and our proposed methodology.

Sentiment analysis plays a crucial role in understanding customer feedback, guiding product development, and informing business decisions. This paper introduces term sentiment entropy (TSE), a novel weighting method that leverages the distribution of sentiment labels associated with words to enhance text classification accuracy. TSE complements traditional TF-IDF techniques by capturing the nuances of sentiment variation across different contexts. Experiments across diverse public datasets demonstrate TSE's potential to improve sentiment analysis performance, especially in capturing subtle sentiment shifts and adapting to specific domains. While computational cost and label quality pose challenges, TSE offers a promising avenue for refining sentiment analysis and opening new research frontiers.

In this work is proposed a new unsupervised method to evaluate the behavior of urban green areas in presence of heatwave scenarios analyzing the NDVI, NDMI and LST satellite data. To evaluate how these three indices characterize urban green areas during periods of heat waves, a reclassification of the data raster of each index is carried out. Rather than using standard classifications of the three indices, an unsupervised classification approach is proposed that uses the Elbow method to determine the optimal number of classes and the Jenks thematic classification method. Each class is assigned a Gaussian fuzzy set with means and standard deviations equal to that of the associated thematic class. The green urban areas are classified using zonal statistics operators and the degree of membership in the corresponding fuzzy set is used to assess the reliability of the classification. Finally, for each type of greenery the frequencies of belonging to the NDVI, NDMI and LST classes are analyzed to evaluate the behavior of the type of urban greenery during heatwaves. The framework was tested in an urban area consisting of the city of Naples (Italy). The results show that some types of greenery, such as deciduous forests and olive groves, are not very vulnerable to heatwave scenarios, unlike uncultivated areas which, instead, show critical behaviors during heatwaves.

Most common classifications for acetabular bone defects are based on radiographic two-dimension imaging, with low reliability and reproducibility. With the rise of modern processing techniques based on 3D modelling, methodologies for volumetric quantification of acetabular bone loss are available. Our study aims to describe a new methodology for quantitative assess-ment of acetabular defects, based on 3D modelling, focused on the surface analysis of the integrity of the main anatomical structures of the acetabulum represented by four corresponding sectors (posterior, superior, anterior, and medial). The defect entity is measured as the Area Increase Ra-tio (AIR) detected in all the sectors analyzed on three planes of view (frontal, sagittal and axial) compared to healthy hemipelvises. The analysis was performed on 3D-models from the CT-scan of six exemplary specimens with a unilateral pathological hemipelvis. AIR between the native and the pathological hemipelvis was calculated for each sector, for a total of 48 analysis (range, +0.93% - +171.35%). AIR of >50% were found in 22/48(45.8%) sectors and affected mostly the posterior, medial and superior sectors (20/22, 90.9%). Qualitative analysis showed consistency of the data with the morphological features of the defects. Further studies with larger samples are needed to validate the methodology and potentially develop a new classification scheme.

Unquestionably the rapidly changing climate and, therefore, alterations in the associated bioclimate, constitute an alarming reality with implications in daily practice and natural capital management. In this research the present and projected bioclimate evolution over the phytogeographical regions of Greece is displayed. For this purpose, ultrahigh-resolution computation results on the spatial distribution of the Emberger index’s Q2 classes of bioclimatic characterisation are analysed and illustrated for the first time. The assessments are performed over the reference period (1970–2000) and two future time frames (2021–2040; 2041–2060) under the RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 emission scenarios. By 2060 and under the extreme RCP8.5, intense xerothermic trends are demonstrated owing to the resulting significant spatial evolution mainly of the Arid-Hot, Semi-Arid-Very Hot, Semi-Arid-Hot and Semi-Arid-Temperate Q2 classes, respectively, over the phytogeographical regions of Kiklades (up to 29% occupation), Kriti and Karpathos (up to 30%), West Aegean Islands (up to 26%), North East (up to 56%)–North Central (up to 31%). The RCP8.5 long-term period exhibits the strongest impacts over approximately the right half of the Greek territory the bioclimate of which appears as more dry-thermal in the future.

Predicting the outcome of a future game between two National Basketball Association (NBA) teams poses a challenging problem of interest to statistical scientists as well as the general public. In this article, we formalize the problem of predicting the game results as a classification problem and apply the principle of maximum entropy to construct NBA maximum entropy (NBAME) model that fits to discrete statistics for NBA games, and then predict the outcomes of NBA playoffs by the NBAME model. The best NBAME model is able to correctly predict the winning team 74.4 percent of the time as compared to some other machine learning algorithms which is correct 69.3 percent of the time.

Evolution remains an incessant process in viruses, allowing them to elude host immune response and induce severe diseases, impacting the diagnostic and vaccine effectiveness. Predicting emerging viral genomes is crucial, particularly in diseases like dengue, where viruses disrupt host cells, leading to fatal outcomes. Deep learning has been applied to predict dengue fever cases; there has been relatively less emphasis on its significance in forecasting emerging Dengue Virus (DENV) serotype. While Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN) were originally designed for modeling temporal sequences, our proposed DL-DVE generative and classification model, trained on complete genome data of DENV, transcends traditional approaches by learning semantic relationships between nucleotides in a continuous vector space instead of representing contextual meaning of nucleotide characters. Leveraging 2000 publicly available DENV complete genome sequences, our Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) based generative and Feedforward Neural Network (FNN) based classification DL-DVE model showcases proficiency in learning intricate patterns and generating sequences for emerging serotype of DENV. The generative model showed accuracy of 93% and the classification model provided insight into the specific serotype label, corroborated by BLAST search verification. Evaluation metrics such as ROC-AUC value 0.818, accuracy, precision, recall and F1 score all to be around 99.00%, demonstrated the classification model’s reliability.  Our model classified the generated sequences as DENV-4, exhibiting 65.99% similarity to DENV-4 and around 63-65% similarity with other serotypes, indicating notable distinction from other serotypes. Moreover, the intra-serotype divergence of sequences with a minimum 90% similarity underscored their uniqueness. We analyzed the conserved motifs in the genome through MEME Suite (version 5.5.5). Our research strives to contribute to the ongoing fight against the Dengue virus by offering predictive insights into its genomic evolution. Looking ahead, proactive predictive modeling before mutations occur holds potential for guiding vaccine design and diagnostic kit development.

Prostate Cancer remains a prevalent health concern, emphasizing the critical need for early diagnosis and precise treatment strategies to mitigate mortality rates. Accurate prediction of cancer grade is paramount for timely interventions. This paper introduces an approach to prostate cancer grading, framing it as a classification problem. Leveraging ResNet models on multi-scale patch-level digital pathology and the Diagset dataset, the proposed method demonstrates notable success, achieving an accuracy of 0.999 in identifying clinically significant prostate cancer. The study contributes to the evolving landscape of cancer diagnostics, offering a promising avenue for improved grading accuracy and, consequently, more effective treatment planning. By integrating innovative deep-learning techniques with comprehensive datasets, our approach presents a step forward in the pursuit of personalized and targeted cancer care.

The advancements in social networking have empowered open expression on micro blogging platforms like Twitter. Traditional Twitter Sentiment Analysis (TSA) faced challenges due to rule-based or dictionary algorithms, dealing with feature selection, ambiguity, sparse data, and language variations. This study proposed a classification framework for Twitter sentiment data using word count vectorization and machine learning techniques to reduce the difficulties addressed on annotated sentiment-labelled tweets. Various classifiers (Naive Bayes, Decision Tree, K Nearest Neighbours, Logistic Regression, and Random Forest) were evaluated based on Accuracy, Precision, Recall, F1-score, and Specificity. Random Forest outperformed others with an Area under Curve (AUC) value of 0.96, and an Average Precision (AP) score of 0.96 in sentiment classification, especially effective with minimal Twitter-specific features.

Tsetlin machine (TM) is a novel machine learning approach that implements propositional logic to perform different tasks like classification and regression. The TM can not only achieves competitive accuracy in these tasks but it is also able to provide results that are explainable and easy to implement using simple hardware. The TM learns using clauses based off the features of the data. Final classification is done using a combination of the clauses. In this paper, we propose the novel idea of adding regularizers to TM, called as Regularized TM (RegTM), to improve generalization. Regularizers have been widely used in machine learning to improve accuracy. We explore different regularization strategies and how they would influence performance. We show the feasibility of our methodology by different experiments on benchmark datasets.

Automatic speech recognition of native languages plays a crucial role in fostering inclusivity and preserving linguistic diversity. The Kashmiri language, an underrepresented Indo-Aryan dialect primarily spoken in the Kashmir Valley, poses substantial challenges for existing AI models due to its phonetic diversity and scant linguistic resources. This study addresses these hurdles by developing a robust spoken Kashmiri recognition system that employs dual feature extraction with spectrogram augmentation and a hybrid Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Gated Multi-Layer Perceptron (gMLP) model. Key to this endeavour is the creation of a high-fidelity dataset that captures the phonetic variations across Kashmiri dialects, focusing on twelve specific words. Through the integration of dual feature extraction, spectrogram augmentation, and the innovative hybrid modelling approach, our system attains an impressive 96% accuracy on the test dataset for classifying these twelve spoken words. This research not only enhances the generalization and resilience of spoken Kashmiri recognition systems but also represents a critical step towards advancing technology and safeguarding the Kashmiri language within this underrepresented linguistic domain.

Recent advances in artificial intelligence combined with behavioral sciences have led to the development of cutting-edge tools for recognizing human emotions based on text, video, audio, and physiological data. However, these data sources are expensive, intrusive, and regulated, unlike plants which have been shown to be sensitive to human steps and sounds. A methodology is proposed to use plants as human emotion detectors. Electrical signals from plants are tracked and labeled based on video data. Labeled data are then used for classification. MLP, biLSTM, MFCC-CNN, MFCC-ResNet, and additionally, Random Forests, 1-Dimensional CNN, and biLSTM without windowing models are set using a grid search algorithm with cross-validation. Finally, best-parameterized models are trained and used with the test set for classification. The performance of this methodology is measured with a case study with 54 participants, who were watching an emotionally charged video, as ground truth their facial emotions were simultaneously measured using face emotion analysis. The Random Forest model shows the best performance, particularly in recognizing high-arousal emotions, achieving an overall weighted accuracy of 55.2% and demonstrating high weighted recall in emotions such as fear 61.0% and happiness 60.4%. The MFCC-ResNet model offers decently balanced results, with Accuracy(MFCC-ResNet)=0.318 and Recall (MFCC-ResNet)=0.324. With the MFCC-ResNet model fear and anger are recognized with 75% and 50% recall respectively. Thus, using plants as an emotion recognition tool seems worth investigating, addressing both cost and privacy concerns.

Scene classification plays an important role in the intelligent processing of high-resolution satellite (HRS) remotely sensed image. In HRS image classification, multiple features, e.g. shape, color, and texture features, are employed to represent scenes from different perspectives. Accordingly, effective integration of multiple features always results in better performance compared to methods based on a single feature in the interpretation of HRS image. In this paper, we introduce a multi-task joint sparse and low-rank representation model to combine the strength of multiple features for HRS image interpretation. Specifically, a multi-task learning formulation is applied to simultaneously consider sparse and low-rank structure across multiple tasks. The proposed model is optimized as a non-smooth convex optimization problem using an accelerated proximal gradient method. Experiments on two public scene classification datasets demonstrate that the proposed method achieves remarkable performance and improves upon the state-of-art methods in respective applications.

Musical instrument recognition is a relatively unexplored area of machine learning due to the need to analyze complex spatial-temporal audio features. Traditional methods using individual spectrograms, like STFT, Log-Mel, and MFCC, often miss the full range of features. We propose a hierarchical residual attention network using a scaled combination of multiple spectrograms, including STFT, Log-Mel, MFCC, and CST features (chroma, spectral contrast, and Tonnetz), to create a comprehensive sound representation. This model enhances focus on relevant spectrogram parts through attention mechanisms. Experimental results with the OpenMIC-2018 dataset show significant improvement in classification accuracy, especially with the "Magnified 1/4 Size" configuration. Future work will optimize CST feature scaling, explore advanced attention mechanisms, and apply the model to other audio tasks to assess its generalizability.

In this study, we provide the Lie symmetries and a classification of plane symmetric static space-times. Based on the invariance of the Lagrange equations of plane symmetries static space-time systems under the transformation Lie group, we provide the Lie symmetry determination equation, Lie symmetry theorem, and the conserved quantity of the systems; by utilizing the Lie symmetry method to solute the system, we give complete classification of the plane symmetric static space-times systems. The research results indicate that using the Lie symmetry method to study plane symmetric static spacetime can identify a series of conserved quantities that exist in the system; Discovered 5 basic Lie symmetries in the system; When the metric parameters of the system are appropriately selected, the plane symmetric static spacetime can have 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, and 17 Lie symmetric symmetries and conserved quantities.

The electric network frequency (ENF), often referred to as the industrial heartbeat, plays a crucial role in the power system. In recent years, it has found applications in multimedia evidence identification for court proceedings and audio-visual temporal source identification. This paper introduces a ENF region classification model named UniTS-SinSpec within the UniTS framework. The model integrates the si-nusoidal activation function and spectral attention mechanism while also redesigning the model frame-work. Training is conducted using a public dataset on the open science framework platform (OSF), with final experimental results demonstrating that after parameter optimization, the UniTS-SinSpec model achieves an average validation accuracy of 97.47%, surpassing current state-of-the-art and baseline models. Accurate classification can significantly aid in ENF temporal source identification. Future re-search will focus on expanding dataset coverage and diversity to verify the model's generality and ro-bustness across different regions, time spans, and data sources. Additionally, it aims to explore extensive application potential of ENF region classification in preventing crimes such as telecommunications fraud, terrorism, and child pornography.

The comprehensive analysis of cross-country skiing races is a pivotal step in establishing effective training objectives and tactical strategies. This study aimed to establish a method for the classifi-cation of sub-techniques and analyzing skiing characteristics during cross-country skiing skating style timed races on snow using high-precision kinematic GNSS devices. The study involved at-taching GNSS devices to the heads of two athletes during skating style timed races on cross-country ski courses. These devices provided precise positional data and recorded vertical and hor-izontal head movements and ground over velocity (VOG). Sub-techniques were classified by de-fining waveform patterns for G2, G3, G4, and G6 based on these data. The validity of classifica-tion was verified by comparing GNSS data with video analysis, a process that yielded classifica-tion accuracies ranging from 94.0% to 99.3% for G2, G3, G4, and G6. Notably, G4 emerged as the fastest technique, with sub-technique selection varying among skiers and being influenced by skiing velocity and course inclination. The study's findings have practical implications for ath-letes and coaches, as they demonstrate that high-precision kinematic GNSS devices can accurate-ly classify sub-techniques and detect skiing characteristics during skate-style cross-country skiing races, thereby providing valuable insights for training and strategy development.

Based on molecular phylogenetic analyses, but also considering morphological characters, four new families are separated from the family Glomeraceae within the Glomerales and the class Glomeromycetes. The revised family Glomeraceae comprises only four genera: the type genus Glomus, Complexispora, Sclerocarpum and Simiglomus. Septoglomeraceae fam. nov. comprises, besides Septoglomus, also Funneliformis, Funneliglomus, Blaszkowskia and Viscospora. Sclerocystaceae fam. nov. is represented by the type genus Sclerocystis, but also by Halonatospora, Oehlia, Parvocarpum, Rhizoglomus and Silvaspora. Kamienskiaceae fam. nov. encompasses Kamienskia, Microkamienskia and Epigeocarpum. Finally, Dominikiaceae fam. nov. includes the genera Dominikia, Macrodominikia gen. nov. Microdominikia, Nanoglomus and Orientoglomus. The genera Oehlia and Halonatospora form two other clades well separated from Silvaspora, Sclerocystis and Rhizoglomus and might represent two further families within the Glomerales. Such deeper-going separation is to our opinion fully supported by molecular phylogeny, but in view of the low numbers of taxa, this separation is not yet needed at this stage of research progress.

Recent advances in satellite technology have brought enormous potential to ecosystem mapping, which is one of the fundamental components of environmental studies. In this paper, a Random Forest classifier is applied for the strict assessment of the efficiency of ecosystem mapping through a detailed comparative analysis between combined Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 data and stand-alone Sentinel-2 imagery over three priority ecosystems, including wetlands, riverine areas, and mangroves in Bangladesh. The collocated images, based on the integration of Sentinel-1 data with Sentinel-2 data, would do better than Sentinel-2 imagery alone over various ecosystems. Particularly, in this study, attention focused on the Hakaluki Haor area for the wetlands, the Padma-Jamuna River confluence for the riverine ecosystem, and the Sundarban forest for mangroves. By leveraging Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data in C-band dual-polarization from Sentinel-1 and four spectral bands (blue, green, red, and near-infrared) from Sentinel-2, the study analyzes imagery from December 2022 to February 2023. A 5% cloud masking filter is applied to optical data to enhance accuracy. In this methodology, 70% of the total signature values are used for training the classification model and the remaining 30% for testing. It can be noticed from the results that with the use of fused data, remarkably high accuracy in classification has been improved, such as overall accuracies of 94.17% for mangroves, 87.30% for riverine, and 85.96% for wetland ecosystems. In contrast, the use of singular Sentinel-2 imagery yields lower accuracies of 91.56%, 85.21%, and 82.51% for the respective ecosystems. The integration of radar data is shown to provide critical information, especially in environments with dense vegetation or cloud cover, where optical data alone may be insufficient. The findings of this study underline the limitations of relying on Sentinel-2 imagery to capture complex details of diverse ecosystems and highlight the need to include Sentinel-1 data for a more holistic analysis. This fusion allows improved accuracy to be achieved, which not only brings in more depth of ecological knowledge but also underpins more effective conservation strategies.

In this paper we describe a method which combines sentiment analysis with machine learning techniques and/or multivariate statistical analysis. By applying this methodology it is possible to classify a collection of texts into two or more groups or clusters. On the basis of a number of previously defined clusters, the novelty of the outlined approach is the use of the sentiment analysis results as input to the machine learning model or multivariate statistical analysis. Once the classifier has been obtained, we can assign a given text into one of the pre-established clusters. The groups or clusters can represent different time periods, classes of texts transcribed from different conversations, etc. The method is illustrated through an example taken from one of the two studies in which we have applied this methodology. In one of the studies, the method was used to classify press news of a volcanic eruption, while in the other study it was used to classify the conversations recorded between a chatbot with different kinds of speakers (humans or chatbots). This last study was the seminal work in which we introduced this methodology.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a widely practiced lifesaving skill. Conventional CPR is based on manual chest compressions and delivering mouth-to-mouth breaths. There has been advancement in biomedical technology over the last few decades which has led to the introduction of new techniques and devices in CPR as well. In light of these advancements, we propose SMEAR (Standard, Mechanical, ECMO Assisted, Augmented virtual and Remote) classification system to provide structured overview from traditional to novel methods and devices. The standard or Manual CPR, widely practiced by the general public during out-of-hospital cardiac arrests, combines active chest compressions with or without mouth breathing. However, to enhance CPR’s efficacy, various mechanical devices have been developed, encompassing Active Chest Compression, Passive Decompression, and those integrated with Automated External Defibrillators. Feedback sensor-equipped devices, include the Metronome, Accelerometer, Barometer, and Triaxial Field Induction. Mechanical devices, classified by their compression mechanisms, can be isolated – like the Piston-driven, Load-distributing, and Active Compression-Decompression (ACD) – or combined, as in ACD-ITV (Impedance Threshold Device), ACD-IAC (Interposed Abdominal Compression), and ACD-ITV-EECP (Enhanced External Counter Pulsation). Beyond mechanics, Extracorporeal CPR offers veno-arterial Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation in refractory cardiac arrest and can improve outcomes. Augmented Virtual Reality usage in training and provision of CPR is at the early stages. It has the potential of expanded usage in training public to provide high-quality CPR. A provider can be remotely guided step by step via telephone or smartphone applications, ensuring continuous support until professional assistance arrives.

This paper focuses on the crucial role that remote sensing plays in divining land features. Data that is collected distantly provides information in spectral, spatial, temporal and radiometric domains, with each domain having the specific resolution to information collected. Diverse sectors such as hydrology, geology, agriculture, land cover mapping, forestry, urban development and planning, oceanography and others are known to use and rely on information that is gathered remotely from different sensors. In the present study, IRS LISS IV Multi-spectral data is used for land cover mapping. It is known, however, that the task of classifying high-resolution imagery of land cover through manual digitizing consumes time and is way too costly. Therefore, this paper proposes accomplishing classifications by way of enforcing algorithms in computers. These classifications fall in three classes: supervised, unsupervised, and object-based classification. In the case of supervised classification, two approaches are relied upon for land cover classification of high-resolution LISS-IV multispectral image. These approaches are Maximum Likelihood and Support Vector Machine (SVM). Finally, the paper proposes a step-by-step procedure for optical image classification methodology. This paper concludes that in optical data classification, SVM classification gives a better result than the ML classification technique.

Atlas Posterior Arch Deficiency (APAD) is a rare anatomical variation of the atlas vertebra that can be detected using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). This study aims to evaluate the prevalence, classification, and clinical implications of APAD in an Italian cohort.

Background: Despite recent advancements, medical technology has not yet reached its peak. Precision medicine is growing rapidly, thanks to machine learning breakthroughs powered by increased computational capabilities. This article explores a deep-learning application for computer-aided diagnosis in dermatology. Methods: Using a custom model based on EfficientNetB3 and deep learning, we propose an approach for skin lesion classification that offers superior results with smaller, cheaper, and faster inference times compared to other models. The skin images dataset used for this research includes 8,222 files selected from the authors' collection and the ISIC2019 archive, covering six dermatological conditions. Results: The model achieved 95.4% validation accuracy on four categories—melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, benign keratosis-like lesions, and melanocytic nevi—using an average of 1,600 images per category. Adding two categories with fewer images (about 700 each)—squamous cell carcinoma and actinic keratoses—reduced the validation accuracy to 88.8%. The model maintained accuracy on new clinical test images taken under the same conditions as the training dataset. Conclusions: The custom model demonstrated excellent performance on the diverse skin lesions dataset, with significant potential for further enhancements.

In the extensive monitoring of maritime traffic, maritime management frequently encounters incomplete automatic identification system (AIS) data, particularly in critical static fields like vessel types. This shortfall presents substantial challenges in safety management, necessitating robust methods for data completion. Distinct from road traffic, where road width imposes constraints, maritime vessels of identical classifications often choose significantly divergent routes, deviating by several nautical miles. Sole dependence on trajectory clustering is insufficient. Addressing this issue, we segments the maritime area into spatiotemporal grids, transforming vessel paths into sequences of grid encodings. Utilizing natural language processing techniques, we integrate the Word2vec word embedding approach with our novel biLSTM self-attention chunk-max pooling net (biSAMNet) model, enhancing the classification of vessel trajectories. This method is crucial for determining static details like vessel types. Employing the Taiwan Strait as a case study and benchmarking against CNN, RNN, and methods based on the attention mechanism, our findings underscore our model’s superiority. The biSAMNet achieves an impressive vessel classification F1 score of 0.94, using only 5-dimensional word embeddings, highlighting the effectiveness of Word2vec pre-trained embedding layers. This research introduces a novel paradigm for processing vessel trajectory data, greatly enhancing the accuracy of filling in incomplete vessel type details.

Traffic accidents are among the most common causes of death worldwide. According to statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO), 50 million people are involved in traffic accidents every year. Canada, particularly Montreal, is not immune to this problem. Data from the Société de l’Assurance Automobile du Québec (SAAQ) shows that there were 392 deaths on Québec roads in 2022, 38 of them related to the city of Montreal. This value represents an increase of 29.3% for the city of Montreal compared to the average for the years 2017 to 2021. In this context, it is important to take concrete measures to improve traffic safety in the city of Montreal. In this article, we present a web-based solution based on machine learning that predicts the severity of traffic accidents in the city of Montreal. This solution uses dataset of traffic accidents that occurred in Montreal between 2012 and 2021. Classification algorithms such as eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), Categorical Boosting (CatBoost), Random Forest (RF) and Gradient Boosting (GB) were used to develop the prediction model. When evaluating the prediction model, performance metrics such as precision, recall, F1 score, and accuracy are taken into account. The performance analysis shows an excellent accuracy of 96% for the prediction model based on the XGBoost classifier. The other models (CatBoost, RF, GB) achieved 95%, 93% and 89% accuracy, respectively. The prediction model based on the XGBoost classifier was deployed using a client-server web application managed by Swagger-UI and the Flask Python framework.

Recently, deep neural networks (DNNs) have been widely used in various fields such as autonomous vehicles and smart homes. Since these DNNs can be directly implemented on edge devices, they offer advantages such as real-time processing in low-power and low-bandwidth environments. However, deployment of DNNs in embedded systems, including edge devices, exposes them to threats such as fault injection attacks. In this paper, we introduce two methods to induce misclassifications by using clock and voltage glitch-based fault attacks in devices where DNN models are executed. As a result of experiments on a microcontroller implemented with a DNN for image classification, we show that glitch injection attacks can lead with high probability to serious misclassifications. Furthermore, we propose a countermeasure to glitch attacks on the softmax function, and confirm that this method is effective in preventing misclassifications.

Breast cancer is the second most common cancer worldwide, primarily affecting women, while histopathological image analysis is one of the possibilities used to determine tumor malignancy. Regarding image analysis, the application of deep learning has become increasingly prevalent in recent years. However, a significant issue is the unbalanced nature of available datasets, with some classes having more images than others, which may impact the performance of the models due to poorer generalisability. A possible strategy to avoid this problem is downsampling the class with the most images to create a balanced dataset. Nevertheless, this approach is not recommended for small datasets as it can lead to poor model performance. Instead, techniques such as data augmentation are traditionally used to address this issue. These techniques apply simple transformations, such as translation or rotation, to the images to increase variability in the dataset. Recently, Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have emerged, which can generate images from a relatively small training set. This work aims to enhance the model’s performance in classifying histopathological images by applying data augmentation using GANs instead of traditional techniques.

Predicting human trajectories poses a significant challenge due to the complex interplay of pedestrian behavior, which is influenced by environmental layout and interpersonal dynamics. This complexity is further compounded by variations in scene density. To address this, we introduce a novel dataset from the Festival of Lights in Lyon 2022, characterized by a wide range of densities (0.2-2.2 ped/m2). Our analysis demonstrates that density-based classification of data can significantly enhance the accuracy of predictive algorithms. We propose an innovative two-stage processing approach, surpassing current state-of-the-art methods in performance. Additionally, we utilize a collision-based error metric to better account for collisions in trajectory predictions. Our findings indicate that the effectiveness of this error metric is density-dependent, offering prediction insights. This study not only advances our understanding of human trajectory prediction in dense environments but also presents a methodological framework for integrating density considerations into predictive modeling, thereby improving algorithmic performance and collision avoidance.

As large language models (LLMs) continue to advance, evaluating their comprehensive capabilities becomes significant for their application in various fields. This research study comprehensively evaluates the language, vision, speech, and multimodal capabilities of GPT-4o. The study employs standardized exam questions, reasoning tasks, and translation assessments to assess the model's language capability. Additionally, GPT-4o's vision and speech capabilities are tested through image classification and object recognition tasks, as well as accent classification. The multimodal evaluation assesses the model's performance in integrating visual and linguistic data. Our findings reveal that GPT-4o demonstrates high accuracy and efficiency across multiple domains in language and reasoning capabilities, excelling in tasks that require few-shot learning. GPT-4o also provides notable improvements in multimodal tasks compared to its predecessors. However, the model shows variability and faces limitations in handling complex and ambiguous inputs, particularly in audio and vision capabilities. This paper highlights the need for more comprehensive benchmarks and robust evaluation frameworks, encompassing qualitative assessments involving human judgment as well as error analysis. Future work should focus on expanding datasets, investigating prompt-based assessment, and enhancing few-shot learning techniques to test the model's practical applicability and performance in real-world scenarios.

The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of brain arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) and focus on their management. The therapeutic options differ in each case depending on the location, size, and adjacent anatomical content of the AVM. The surgical resection by microsurgery is the preferred therapeutic option for a small and superficial AVM not related to an eloquent area (e.g., Spetzler-Martin grades I and II). On the other hand, when facing a very large AVM (e.g., Spetzler-Martin grades IV and V), the conservative and symptomatic treatment remains the most common management option due to the high risk-benefit ratio of any intervention. The management of AVMs with features between these two extremes (e.g., Spetzler-Martin grade III) remains less stablished. Stereotactic radiosurgery usually is the option for deep and small AVMs. Embolization has been usually considered before surgery for occlusion of deep arterial supplies of an AVM or to decrease its nidus size. Young patients and AVMs with compact nidus are features that weight in favor of a surgical approach. For the minority of cases that have the AVM diagnosed before bleeding the most common recommendation is to treat conservatively and particularly to avoid embolization. In summary, surgery is the gold-standard approach to cure an AVM and the choice for small AVMs located in non-eloquent area and with superficial venous drainage; large AVMs are mostly treated conservatively; the treatment of AVM with intermediate features is tailored, chosen with the guidance of classification systems, and encompasses radiosurgery and pre-operative embolization.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) equipped with hyperspectral imagers have emerged as an essential technology for the characterization of inland water bodies. The high spectral and spatial resolutions of these systems enable the retrieval of a plethora of optically-active water quality parameters via band ratio algorithms and machine learning methods. However, fitting and validating these models requires access to sufficient quantities of in situ reference data which are time-consuming and expensive to obtain. In this study, we demonstrate how the Generative Topographic Mapping (GTM), a Bayesian realization of the Self-organizing Map, can be used to visualize high-dimensional hyperspectral imagery and extract spectral signatures corresponding to unique endmembers present in the water. Using data collected across a North Texas pond, we first apply the GTM to visualize the distribution of captured reflectance spectra revealing small-scale spatial variability of water composition. Next, we demonstrate how the nodes of the fitted GTM can be interpreted as unique spectral endmembers. Using extracted endmembers together with the normalized spectral similarity score, we are able to efficiently map the abundance of near shore algae as well as the evolution of a rhodamine tracer dye used to simulate water contamination by a localized source.

Human microbiome data from genomic sequencing technologies is fast accumulating, giving us insights into bacterial taxa that contribute to health and disease. Predictive modeling of such microbiota count data for classification of human infection from parasitic worms such as helminths can help in detection and management across global populations. Real-world datasets of microbiome experiments are typically sparse containing hundreds of measurements for bacterial species, of which only a few are detected in the bio-specimens that are analyzed. This feature of microbiome data produces the challenge of needing more observations for accurate predictive modeling and has been dealt with previously using different methods of feature reduction. To our knowledge, integrative methods such as transfer learning has not been explored in the microbiome domain yet, as a way to deal with data sparsity by incorporating knowledge of different but related datasets. One way of incorporating this knowledge is by using a meaningful mapping among features of these datasets. In this paper, we claim that this mapping would exist among members of each individual cluster grouped based on phylogenetic dependency among taxa and their association to the phenotype. We validate our claim by showing that models incorporating associations in such a grouped feature space result in no performance deterioration for the given classification task. In this paper, we test our hypothesis using classification models that detect helminth infection in microbiota of human fecal samples obtained from Indonesia and Liberia countries. In our experiments, we first learn binary classifiers for helminth infection detection by using Naive Bayes, Support Vector Machines, Multilayer Perceptrons, and Random Forest methods. In the next step, we add taxonomic modeling using the SMART-scan module to group the data, and learn classifiers using the same four methods, to test the validity of the achieved groupings. We observed a 6% to 23% and 7% to 26% performance improvement based on the Area Under ROC Curve (AUC) and Balanced Accuracy(Bacc) measures, respectively, over 10 runs of 10-fold cross-validation. These results show that using phylogenetic dependency for grouping our microbiota data actually results in a noticeable improvement in classification performance for helminth infection detection. These promising results from this feasibility study demonstrate that methods such as SMART-scan can be utilized in the future for knowledge transfer from different but related microbiome datasets by phylogenetically-related functional mapping, to enable novel integrative biomarker discovery.

(1) Background: Arrhythmia, or irregular heart rhythms, are a prevalent cardiovascular condition and can be diagnosed using electrocardiogram (ECG) signals. Advances in deep learning have enabled automated analysis of these signals. However, the effectiveness of deep learning models depends heavily on the quality of signal preprocessing. This study evaluates the impact of different windowing techniques applied to Fourier Transform-preprocessed ECG signals on the classification accuracy of deep learning models. (2) Methods: We applied three windowing techniques—Hamming, Hann, and Blackman—to transform ECG signals into the frequency domain. A 1D Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) was employed to classify the ECG signals into five arrhythmia categories based on features extracted from each windowed signal.(3) Results: The Blackman window yielded the highest classification accuracy, with improved signal-to-noise ratio and reduced spectral leakage compared to the Hamming and Hann windows. (4) Conclusions: The choice of windowing technique significantly influences the effectiveness of deep learning models in ECG classification. Future studies should explore additional preprocessing methods and their clinical applications.

Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are often criticized for their lack of transparency, acting as 'black boxes' in decision-making, a challenge compounded by class imbalance in ECG datasets, which limits their clinical application. This study introduces a CNN-based ECG signal classification model that enhances interpretability and addresses class imbalance through the Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique (SMOTE). The model also integrates Uniform Manifold Approximation and Projection (UMAP) for dimensionality reduction and SHAP value analysis, facilitating the visualization of decision boundaries and the assessment of feature contributions. Our evaluation using the MIT-BIH Arrhythmia Database highlights the model's high performance, with accuracy and precision nearing 1.00 for Normal ECG (NOR), Left Bundle Branch Block (LBBB), Right Bundle Branch Block (RBBB), and Ventricular Premature Beat (PVC) in the six-class task. In the ten-class task, the model demonstrated robustness, particularly with an accuracy of 0.9846, precision of 0.9783, recall of 0.9736, and F1 score of 0.9760 in Pacemaker Fusion Beat (PFHB), supported by an AUC of 0.9999 and AP of 0.9885. These results underscore the model's efficacy in cardiac rhythm recognition and resilience to class imbalance. Future research will explore sophisticated model architectures and feature extraction methods to enhance the model's generalization and clinical applicability for early heart disease diagnosis and personalized treatment.

This article presents a conceptual program model that integrates three main methods: object recognition, color classification, and QR decoding of information. These methods are well-established in the fields of Robotics and Artificial Intelligence, yet they remain subjects of ongoing research interest. The program model organizes the execution of the methods in a sequence directed toward recognized objects. In this way, color classification and QR decoding are performed only on already recognized objects. Colors and QR codes that do not belong to recognized objects are not analyzed, which can provide intelligent robots with reliable and accurate information about the objects they can recognize. For research purposes, image sensors (cameras), images saved to disk, clipboard, or shared memory between applications are used. The article shows that the program model can be augmented with various sensors and algorithms for the comprehensive construction of program control of autonomous robots. Future research that builds on current studies will focus on measuring the distance to recognized objects and structuring the collected information about these objects, which will create opportunities for perceptual anchoring and logical reasoning in the program control of intelligent robots.

It is the aim of this article to introduce a concise notation that is be able to capture the most important dimensions of sexuality and thus facilitate discussions. Moreover, the major three dimensions - sex, gender, and sexual orientation - lead to a straightforward classification which motivates the quest for stringent explanatory models, some of which are also discussed.

The advent of deep learning (DL) has revolutionized medical imaging, offering unprecedented avenues for accurate disease classification and diagnosis. DL models have shown remarkable promise for classifying brain tumor from Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans. However, despite their impressive performance, the opaque nature of DL models poses challenges in understanding their decision-making processes, particularly crucial in medical contexts where interpretability is essential. This paper explores the intersection of medical image analysis and DL interpretability, aiming to elucidate the decision-making rationale of DL models in brain tumor classification. Leveraging state-of-the-art DL frameworks with transfer learning, we conduct a comprehensive evaluation encompassing both classification accuracy and interpretability. Using state-of-the-art DL frameworks with transfer learning, we conduct a thorough evaluation covering both classification accuracy and interpretability. We employ adaptive path-based techniques to understand the underlying decision-making mechanisms of these models. Grad-CAM and Grad-CAM++ highlight critical image regions where the tumors are located.

Dairy products are an important source of protein and other nutrients in the Mediterranean diet. In these countries the most common source of milk for producing dairies are cow, goat, sheep and buffalo. Andalusia is traditionally the largest producer of goat milk in Spain. Kefir is a fermented product made from bacteria and yeasts which has health benefits beyond its nutritional properties. There is a lack of knowledge about the molecular mechanisms and metabolites that bring about these benefits. In this work, the combination of analytical techniques (GC-FID, UHPLC-MS-QToF, GC-QqQ-MS, and GC-ToF-MS) resulted in the detection of 105 metabolites in kefir produced with goat milk from two different thermal treatments (raw and pasteurized) fermented at four times (12, 24, 36, and 48 h, using 0 h as control). Of these, 27 metabolites differed between kefir produced with raw and pasteurized milk. These changes could be possibly caused by the effect of pasteurization on the microbial population in the starting milk. Some interesting molecules were identified, as shikimic acid, dehydroabietic acid, GABA and tyramine that could be related to antibacterial properties, enhance of immune system and arterial pressure. Moreover, a viability assay of the NIRS technique was performed to evaluate its use on monitoring the fermentation and classification of samples, which had resulted in a 90 % of correct classified samples according to their fermentation time. This study represents the most comprehensive metabolomic analysis of goat milk kefir so far, revealing the intricate changes in metabolites during fermentation and the impact of milk treatment.

Understanding clinical significance of variants of unknown significance (VUS) reported in next-generation sequencing (NGS) has become essential in cancer treatment. Our study examined six widely used in silico tools: PolyPhen-2, Align-GVGD, MutationTaster2, CADD, REVEL, and Chat-GPT. We utilized a dataset of gene variants known to potentially affect immune therapy. No single tool could comprehensively determine mutation variant pathogenicity. MutationTaster2021 showed the highest overall accuracy and MCC among the tools. Notably, REVEL and Chat-GPT exhibited 100% specificity, suggesting their proficiency in accurately identifying pathogenic variants and minimizing false positives. In contrast, CADD displayed optimal sensitivity, making it suitable for effectively ruling out benign variants.

Aerial image classification has become popular and has attracted extensive research efforts in recent decades. The main challenge lies in its very high spatial resolution but relatively insufficient spectral information. To this end, spatial-spectral feature extraction is a popular strategy for classification. However, parameter determination for that feature extraction is usually time-consuming and depends excessively on experience. In this paper, an automatic spatial feature extraction approach based on image raster and segmental vector data cross-analysis is proposed for the classification of very high spatial resolution (VHSR) aerial imagery. First, multi-resolution segmentation is used to generate strongly homogeneous image objects and extract corresponding vectors. Then, to automatically explore the region of a ground target, two rules, which are derived from Tobler’s First Law of Geography (TFL) and a topological relationship of vector data, are integrated to constrain the extension of a region around a central object. Third, the shape and size of the extended region are described. A final classification map is achieved through a supervised classifier using shape, size, and spectral features. Experiments on three real aerial images of VHSR (0.1 to 0.32 m) are done to evaluate effectiveness and robustness of the proposed approach. Comparisons to state-of-the-art methods demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method in VHSR image classification.

Situational awareness detection and characterization of mental states have a vital role in medicine and many other fields. An electroencephalogram (EEG) is one of the most effective tools for identifying and analyzing cognitive stress. Yet, the measurement, interpretation, and classification of EEG sensors is a challenging task. This study introduces a novel machine learning-based approach to assist in evaluating situational awareness detection using EEG signals and spiking neural networks (SNNs) based on a unique spike-continuous-time-neuron (SCTN). The implemented biologically inspired SNN architecture is used for effective EEG feature extraction by applying time-frequency analysis techniques and allows adept detection and analysis of the various frequency components embedded in the different EEG sub-bands. The EEG signal undergoes encoding into spikes and is then fed into an SNN model which is well-suited to the serial sequence order of the EEG data. We utilize the SCTN-based resonator for EEG feature extraction in the frequency domain which demonstrates a high correlation with the classical FFT features. A new SCTN-based 2-D neural network is introduced for efficient EEG feature mapping aiming to achieve a spatial representation of each EEG sub-band. To validate and evaluate the performance of the proposed approach a common publicly available EEG dataset is used. Experimental results show that by using the extracted EEG frequencies features and the SCTN-based SNN classifier the mental state can be accurately classified with an average accuracy of 96.8% for the common EEG dataset. Our proposed method outperforms existing machine learning-based methods and demonstrates the advantages of using SNN for situational awareness detection and mental state classifications.

Target recognition and fine-grained ship classification in remote sensing face the challenges of high inter-class similarity and sample scarcity. A transfer fusion-based ship image harmonization algorithm is proposed to overcome these challenges. This algorithm designs a feature transfer fusion strategy based on the combination of region aware instantiation and attention mechanism. Implement adversarial learning through image harmony generator and discriminator module to generate realistic remote sensing ship harmony images. Furthermore, the do-main encoder and domain discriminator modules are responsible for extracting feature representations of foreground and background, and further aligning ship foreground with remote sensing ocean background features through feature discrimination. Compared with other advanced image conversion techniques, our algorithm delivers more realistic visuals, improving classification accuracy for six ship types by 3% and twelve types by 2.94%, outperforming Sim2RealNet. Finally, a mixed dataset containing data augmentation and harmonizing samples and real data was proposed for the fine-grained classification task of remote sensing ships. Evaluation experiments were conducted on 8 typical fine-grained classification algorithms, and the accuracy of fine-grained classification for all categories of ships was analyzed. The experimental results show that the mixed dataset proposed in this paper effectively alleviates the long tail problem in real datasets, and the proposed remote sensing ship data augmentation framework performs better than state-of-the-art data augmentation methods in fine-grained ship classification tasks.

The rapid growth of the global population is causing a significant increase in waste production, leading to serious environmental and public health challenges. To address these issues, waste management systems are incorporating advanced technologies. Machine learning and computer vision are used to predict waste patterns, optimize collection schedules, and improve sorting accuracy. Deep learning automates the sorting process, provides predictive analytics, and enhances recycling rates. Robotics, combined with AI and computer vision, improves sorting efficiency, while the Internet of Things (IoT) monitors waste levels and optimizes collection routes. Despite these benefits, challenges such as data scarcity, high computational demands, and the need for substantial infrastructure investments must be addressed. This research explores the integration of advanced technologies into waste management and evaluates their effectiveness using waste datasets. It highlights the potential to tackle environmental challenges and lay the groundwork for more intelligent waste management solutions.

Adulteration of food products, including honey, is a serious problem in today’s economy. Honey has become the third most counterfeited food product in the world, which requires effective authentication methods. This article presents considerations regarding the development of meteorology to test the quality of honey based on the analysis of bee pollen. The justification for conducting such analyses is the relatively high need for the authentication of honey and its derivatives. It turns out that the honey market and honey itself are the third products in the world in which undesirable, inappropriate, and quality-reducing components may appear, affecting the final quality of a product such as honey. The analyses mentioned above thus come down to issues related to the analysis and processing of images. A certain novelty of the approach to this analysis is an attempt to parameterize them using the so-called Hjorth descriptors, which have been a tool known for almost 50 years from the analysis of electroencephalographic (EEG) signals. In this paper, after an introduction to the issues related to testing honey, the issues related to the method of obtaining bee pollen images, improving their quality by applying appropriate filtration, performing normalization, and finally calculating Hjorth distributors such as: Activity, Mobility, and Complexity will be discussed. In the next stage described in this article, the authors perform a detailed statistical analysis leading to the initial construction of a simple classifier that distinguishes defined gropus of bee pollen images.

The United Nations’ Agenda 2030 has established a series of Sustainable Development Goals to address global challenges, including poverty, food insecurity, access to education, and social inequality. In this context, charitable organizations such as Caritas play a crucial role in mitigating the negative effects of these challenges and promoting fair and sustainable development. This study aims to analyze prevalent needs among individuals seeking assistance from Caritas in Campania and examine how the organization contributes to achieving the Agenda 2030 Goals in the region. The statistical investigation techniques considered include tandem analysis [], which considers a dimension-reduction technique, such as multiple factor analysis, and, then cluster analysis to identify similar groups of individuals. These exploratory data analysis methods have allowed for the identification of common needs, including food assistance, support for education, employment, and housing assistance. Subsequently, Caritas programs and initiatives aimed at meeting these needs and promoting sustainable development are explored. The results indicate that Caritas plays a significant role in addressing the urgent needs of the vulnerable population in Campania and contributes to the goals of Agenda 2030, particularly those related to poverty alleviation, immigration, health promotion, education, employment, and reduction of social inequalities. This study provides an important perspective on the relevance and effectiveness of Caritas’ work in the context of Agenda 2030.

In orthopedics, bone drilling is a crucial part of a surgical method commonly carried out for internal fixation in bone fracture treatment. The primary purpose of bone drilling is the creation of holes for screw insertion to immobilize fractured parts. The bone drilling task depends on the orthopedist and surgeon’s high level of skill and experience. This paper aimed to provide a summary of previously published review studies in the field of bone drilling. This review paper also presents a comprehensive review of the application of machine learning for bone drilling and as a future direction for the automation system. This review can also help medical surgeons and bone drillers understand the latest improvements through parameter selection and optimization strategies to reduce bone damage in bone drilling procedures. Apart from the review study, bone drilling vibration data collected in the University laboratory experiment is also presented in this study. The vibration data consist of three different layers of femur cow bone which are processed and classified using several machine learning methods. LSTM is, used in the bone drilling classification study to prove that the layers of the bone drilling are associated with the vibration signal and can be classified and predicted using the machine learning method.

Deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have revolutionised computer vision technology by automatically learning hierarchical representations of image data, leading to state-of-the-art performance in visual recognition tasks. This article presents a comprehensive review of deep CNNs, from their evolution and architectures to the current state-of-the-art research. The review also provides the core concepts and building blocks of CNNs and their concise mathematical representations. Furthermore, it explores applications of deep CNNs in three popular domains, including medical diagnosis, remote sensing, and facial recognition. This review will benefit researchers and practitioners in computer vision and artificial intelligence, as well as industry professionals seeking to leverage the latest advancements in deep learning technologies.

The application of deep learning algorithms to predict the molecular profiles of various cancers from digital images of hematoxylin and eosin (H&E)-stained slides has been reported in recent years, mainly in gastric and colon cancers. In this study, we investigated the potential use of H&E-stained endometrial cancer slide images to predict the associated mismatch repair (MMR) status. H&E-stained slide images were collected from 127 cases of the primary lesion of endometrial cancer. After digitization using a Nanozoomer virtual slide scanner (Hamamatsu Photonics), we segmented the scanned images into 5,397 tiles of 512 × 512 pixels. The MMR proteins (PMS2, MSH6) were immunohistochemically stained, classified into MMR proficient/deficient, and annotated for each case and tile. We trained several neural networks, including convolutional and attention-based networks, using tiles annotated with the MMR status. Among the tested networks, ResNet50 exhibited the highest area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) of 0.91 for predicting the MMR status. The constructed prediction algorithm may be applicable to other molecular profiles and useful for pre-screening before implementing other, more costly genetic profiling tests.

Automatic garments design class identification for recommending the fashion trends is important nowadays because of the rapid growth of online shopping. By learning the properties of images efficiently, a machine can give better accuracy of classification. Several methods, based on Hand-Engineered feature coding exist for identifying garments design classes. But, most of the time, those methods do not help to achieve better results. Recently, Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have shown better performances for different object recognition. Deep CNN uses multiple levels of representation and abstraction that helps a machine to understand the types of data (images, sound, and text) more accurately. In this paper, we have applied deep CNN for identifying garments design classes. To evaluate the performances, we used two well-known CNN models AlexNet and VGGNet on two different datasets. We also propose a new CNN model based on AlexNet and found better results than existing state-of-the-art by a significant margin.

As Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, particularly Machine Learning algorithms, becomes increasingly ubiquitous, our abilities to understand and interpret AI and machine learning algorithms are becoming increasingly desirable. Visualization has been used as a common tool to view and understand complex machine learning processes. In this paper, we will focus on developing a general framework for the visualization of machine learning models as a scalar valued multi-dimensional function to help users understand how the models behave over different viewing spaces. We first give a formal definition of the visualization problem. Interpolation-based morphing and subspace sampling techniques are applied to generate various renderings through projections and cross-sections of the model space as 3D surfaces or heatmap images. This method will be applied to two real-world datasets and applications: the diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) using a human brain networks dataset and a real-world benchmark dataset for predicting home credit default risks. The visualizations show that different machine learning algorithms can behave quite differently under different conditions.

Educational institutions must identify students who are academically struggling to provide them with necessary support to improve their performance. In this context, recommendation systems powered by deep learning techniques are vital for detecting and categorizing such students. These systems help students plan their future by uncovering patterns in their historical academic data. This study introduces a new deep learning model designed to classify academically underperforming students in educational settings. The model incorporates a Gated Recurrent Neural Network (GRU) and includes specific neural network features like a dense layer, max-pooling layer, and the ADAM optimization algorithm. The model's training and evaluation were conducted using a dataset comprising 15,165 student assessment records from various academic institutions. The performance of the developed GRU model was benchmarked against other educational recommendation systems, including Recurrent Neural Network models, AdaBoost, and the Artificial Immune Recognition System v2. The proposed GRU model demonstrated remarkable accuracy, achieving an overall rate of 99.70%.

Requirements are predominantly written in Natural Language (NL), which makes them accessible to stakeholders with varying degrees of experience, as compared to a model-based language which requires special training. However, despite its benefits, NL can introduce ambiguities and inconsistencies in requirements, which may eventually result in system quality degradation and system failure altogether. The system complexity that characterizes current systems warrants an integrated and comprehensive approach to system design and development. This need has brought about a paradigm shift towards Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) approaches to system design and a departure from traditional document-centric methods. While, MBSE shows great promise, the ambiguities and inconsistencies present in NL requirements hinder their conversion to models directly. The field of Natural Language Processing (NLP) has demonstrated great potential in facilitating the conversion of NL requirements into a semi-machine-readable format that enables their standardization and use in a model-based environment. A first step towards standardizing requirements consists of classifying them according to the ``type'' (design, functional, performance, etc.) they represent. To that end, a language model capable of classifying requirements needs to be fine-tuned on labeled aerospace requirements. This paper presents the development of an annotated aerospace requirements corpus and its use to fine-tune BERT$_\text{BASE-UNCASED}$ to obtain aeroBERT-Classifier: a new language model for classifying aerospace requirements into design, functional, or performance requirements. A comparison between aeroBERT-Classifier and bart-large-mnli (zero-shot text classification) showcased the superior performance of aeroBERT-Classifier on classifying aerospace requirements despite being fine-tuned on a small labeled dataset.

Hyperspectral imaging, a rapidly evolving technique, furnishes exhaustive information on Earth's surface reflectance over an extensive spectrum of wavelengths. We have developed a more precise method for analyzing spectral data by meticulously selecting plant leaf pixels and employing a relative reference approach. This enhanced technique correlates camera pixel values with light intensity, bypassing the need for complex equations and thereby providing clearer insights into vegetation vitality. The findings of this study not only enhance the precision of hyperspectral imaging but also bolster our capability for ecological monitoring and understanding environmental health. A novel algorithm based on the red-edge slope was established to classify images, exploiting the spectral reflectance data gleaned from the hyperspectral Liquid Crystal Tunable Filter (LCTF) camera. Compared with conventional SVM and K-means algorithms, our novel algorithm demonstrated commendable performance, achieving an overall accuracy of 90% with a Kappa Coefficient of 0.86. This comparison highlights the novel algorithm's relative strength and potential for large-scale satellite and drone imagery analysis applications. The advancements facilitated by this research are instrumental in ecological assessments, conservation efforts, and resource management strategies, signaling a leap forward in the era of environmental monitoring and analysis.

After an earthquake, assessing the seismic vulnerability of buildings is essential for prioritizing emergency response, guiding reconstruction, and ensuring public safety. Accurate and timely evaluation of structural damage plays a vital role in mitigating further risks and facilitating in-formed decision-making during disaster recovery. This study investigates the performance of various Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) models, developed by different companies with diverse model sizes and context windows, in analysing post-earthquake images. The primary objective was to evaluate the models' effectiveness in classifying structural damage according to the EMS-98 scale (with 5 levels of damage), which ranges from minor damage to total destruction. For masonry buildings, the correct classification rates varied widely across models, from 28.6% to 64.3%, with mean damage grade errors ranging from 0.50 to 0.79. In the case of reinforced concrete buildings, correct classification rates ranged from 37.5% to 75.0%, with mean damage grade errors between 0.50 and 0.88. The use of fine-tuning could probably improve the results substantially. Improving the accuracy of GAI models could significantly reduce the time and resources needed to assess post-earthquake damage, namely when comparing with more traditional approaches. The results achieved thus far demonstrate the promise of GAI models for rapid, automated, and ac-curate damage evaluation, which is critical for expediting decision-making in disaster response scenarios.

The objective of the study was to analyze the climate change experienced in Spain between 1971 and 2022 and to estimate the future climate (2050). The main objectives were: 1) to analyze the temporal evolution of temperature from 1971 to the present, to quantify the warming process experienced in the case study and to evaluate the increase in ex-treme heat events (heatwaves); 2) to study the evolution of the precipitation regime to determine whether there is a statistically representative trend towards a drier climate and an increase in extreme precipitation; 3) to investigate the interaction between annual precipitation and the continuous increase in temperature; and 4) to estimate the future climate scenario for mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands towards 2050, analyzing the trends in land aridity and predicting a possible change from a Mediterranean climate to a warm steppe climate, according to the Köppen classi-fication. In this study, we used the E-OBS dataset provided by the European Climate Assessment and Dataset (ECA&D) project. E-OBS is a high-resolution gridded daily climate dataset. Its advantage over other databases is that it is based on direct climate information from the weather stations included in the Copernicus ECA&D. Furthermore, a detailed interpolation and refinement process allows a complete, uniform view of the studied territory. This dataset has pro-vided daily weather information since 1950 and is presented as a complete dataset of the European region. It is availa-ble on a regular grid of 0.1 and 0.25 degrees for the elements of daily average temperature (TG), daily minimum tem-perature (TN), daily maximum temperature (TX) and the sum of daily precipitation (RR), among other climatic varia-bles. In this study, we obtained daily temperature data, including the average, maximum and minimum temperature, and precipitation from 1971 to 2022, using the 27.0e dataset. We used information from E-OBS from 1 January 1971 to 31 December 2022, with a resolution of 0.25 degrees. The main purpose of this study was to analyze whether there is a temporal evolution of the precipitation regime in Spain towards less precipitation, and to study the relationship between annual precipitation and the tendency to-wards progressive warming. Specifically, the aim was to test the hypothesis that the increase in temperature resulting from the global warming process implies a tendency towards progressive drought. The hypothesis is + T  - RR. Given the extreme annual variability of the climate, in addition to the ordinary least squares methodology, the techniques mainly used in this study were the Mann-Kendall test and the Kendall-Theil-Sen regression. The Mann-Kendall test confirmed the statistical significance of the relationship between RR and TX, with a statistical relia-bility close to 99.9%. The KTS regression predicted a reduction of 38.25 mm for each 1°C increase. If the warming trend experienced in recent years (1973– 2022) continues, it is foreseeable that by 2050 there will be a reduction in precipitation in Spain of between 14% and 23% with respect to the precipitation of the reference period (understood as the average between 1971 and 2000). Spain’s climate is likely to vary from Mediterranean to warm steppe in the Köppen classification system (from “C” to “B”).

Endometrial cancer (EC) poses a significant global health challenge, with increasing prevalence in 26 of 43 countries and over 13,000 deaths projected in the United States by 2024. This rise correlates with aging populations, the obesity epidemic, and changing reproductive patterns, including delayed childbearing. Despite the early diagnosis in 67% of cases, approximately 30% of cases present with regional or distant spread, leading to nearly 20% mortality rates. Unlike many cancers, EC mortality rates are escalating, outpacing therapeutic advancements until recently. One of the reasons for this was the lack of effective therapeutic options for advanced disease until recently. The introduction of immunotherapy has marked a turning point in EC treatment, particularly benefiting patients with defects in mismatch repair proteins (dMMRs). However, dMMR status alone does not ensure a favorable response, underscoring the need for precise patient selection. This review explores the pivotal role of mismatch repair proteins in EC, emphasizing their heterogeneity, the challenges in their assessment, and their potential as predictive biomarkers.

During the last years some new variants of Permutation entropy have been introduced and applied to EEG analysis, among them a conditional variant and variants using some additional metric information or being based on entropies different from the Shannon entropy. In some situations it is not completely clear what kind of information the new measures and their algorithmic implementations provide. We discuss the new developments and illustrate them for EEG data.

Using machine learning or deep learning to solve the problem of garbage recognition and classification is an important application in computer vision, but due to the incomplete establishment of garbage datasets and the poor performance of complex network models on smart terminal devices, the existing garbage classification models The effect is not good.This paper presents a waste classification and identification method base on transfer learning and lightweight neural network. By migrating the lightweight neural network MobileNetV2 and rebuild it, The reconstructed network is used for feature extraction, and the extracted features are introduced into the SVM to realize the identification of 6 types of garbage. The model was trained and verified by using 2527 pieces of garbage labeled data in the TrashNet dataset, which ultimately resulted in a classification accuracy of 98.4% of the method, which proves that the method can effectively improve the classification accuracy and time and overcome the problem of weak data and less labeling. The over-fitting phenomenon encountered by small data sets in deep learning makes the model robust.
